Dear Friends of The Blue Purl,

There is a quote by a philosopher of ancient Greece, Heraclitus, that we will explain before we share. Basically, it says that when you wake up each day, and step out of bed, it may feel familiar, same floor, same furniture, same surroundings. But the reality is different, the reality is life keeps moving; there is always change. Sometimes it is imperceptible, sometimes it is obvious, but it always just is.

Here is how Heraclitus puts it: "We both step and do not step in the same rivers. We are and are not.’’

Now you see why we explained it first, it’s kind of clever if a bit of a puzzle. The water in the river keeps moving, so when you step in, it is never the same, even if it is the same. Get it?

Change is natural, it is to be embraced, it is good.

Designers are constantly innovating and keeping us on our toes. They invent new cast-on and cast-offs, stitches, lacework, cables. Make 1 right and left didn't popularly appear until about maybe 15 years ago. Backwards cast-on is even more recent.

That is part of the fun and excitement of knitting and crocheting. It is what keeps us interested, challenged, always looking ahead. It is always a metaphor for life in general. These emails are not intended to be meditations, but they are about our craft, which is in so many ways represents the rhythm of our lives, even if we don’t mean it that way.

Think about the popularity of top-down sweaters and the many iterations of short rows. Yes, yes, thank goodness for our Blue Purl experts who can offer advice, classes that can guide you, and in a pinch, YouTube videos.

You are all adapters, we know that, because we, as a community know how to adapt. That is not just useful these days, it is essential.

This pandemic winter – hopefully the last we will have to experience – is a challenge. But we can get through it, together.

We step in the river, and it is the same, but the water keeps moving, so it is different.

We are all crossing this river together and soon will make it to the other side.

CIRRO TRUNK SHOW
The Cirro Trunk show just arrived this week and we love the feel of this yarn. If you've never worked with brushed suri alpaca before, this is a great chance to check out how this fiber knits up and feels against the skin. The sweaters are a modern take on winter staples with tunic lengths, balloon sleeves, and high-low hems. Make sure to check these out on your next visit.
Brooklyn Tweed
Have you seen these cute mitten ornaments? The free pattern by Jared Flood uses any single skein of Brooklyn Tweed with appropriate needle size to make multiple ornaments or gift tags. We think they would be especially adorable with a gift card tucked into it. You can find our Brooklyn Tweed selection of Loft, Peerie, Arbor or Shelter online or in the shop. Find the free pattern on Ravelry.
We just updated our online shop with a few new colors of Brooklyn Tweed in Loft and Shelter- like Camper, a great color to brighten up accessories.

What's New?
Woolfolk Luxury
Seagulls Cowl
Using only 2 skeins of Woolfolk Flette on a US6 needle, the Seagulls cowl makes a great luxury gift for under $50. The pattern uses a simple cable repeat throughout the cowl to give definition to this ultra soft boucle-like yarn. This can be easily knit up in time for holiday gifting or gift the kit to a deserving knitter. Pattern is sold separately on Ravelry, kits are available online or in the shop.
Getting Warmer
Getting Warmer uses just 2 skeins of Woolfolk Flette Bulky on US 10 needles. This piece will fly off your needles. Worn as an oversized cowl or cozy capelet, you'll never want to take this off. We have new colors of Woolfolk Flette Bulky in store and online.
Woolfolk Winter 2020 collection
Speaking of Flette Bulky, have you seen the latest Woolfolk Winter 2020 collection? All 3 patterns in the collection uses Woolfolk's Flette Bulky and if you've held this yarn, you can understand why. It is one of the softest, coziest yarns we've ever worked with. One of the patterns is the Venlig sweater, designed by Veera Välimäki, one of Tam's favorite sweater designers. "Every sweater I've knitted from her has fitted me perfectly. Her patterns are simple to understand with no crazy techniques and always gives a great fit."

We paired some of our favorite hand dyed yarns in solids and variegated colors along with the free pattern for this kit. Find them online or in our shop.
