DECEMBER 2019
Greetings!

The Christmas season is such a wonderful time of year for so many reasons. The chance to spend time with our family and friends, to get dressed up for parties and gatherings, and to choose special gifts for those we care about. At the Mulberry Bush Bookstores we believe books make the best gifts because they're timeless, personal, re-readable, portable, they don't require batteries, are perfect for sharing, and so enjoyable.

We have beautiful new books arriving daily. We also have a unique collection of Christmas cards, stocking stuffers, calendars and special gifts for everyone on your list.

On Monday, December 2nd we invite you to Cider Monday!

That’s not a typo! Instead of Cyber Monday, a day when online merchants offer special deals, we invite you to a new tradition, CIDER MONDAY. We invite you to stop in for a free cup of warm apple cider and a cookie. Come and see some real people and have a good time checking out what’s in our stores. It’s sure to be a heartwarming experience. We can promise no crashing websites, our ‘servers’ won’t be overloaded and we bet they will even smile at you! Instead of waiting to receive your purchase in the mail, you can take it with you when you leave the store. We hope to see you there!

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your friendship and support in 2019. We wish you a Christmas filled with peace, love, family and friends, and a joyous New Year in 2020.

Merry Christmas!

WE ARE HAPPY TO BE PARTICIPATING IN THE
SOS ANGEL TREE PROGRAM AGAIN THIS YEAR.

How the program works:

The Angel Tree program helps stock the SOS Toy Shop where parents, grandparents, and caregivers can shop for free for their children.

Purchase a book in one of our stores appropriate for one of the age groups listed on the Angel ornaments. We will take the books once they are paid for and they will be collected by the SOS and delivered to local children and youth.

DECEMBER STAFF PICKS
MITZI'S PICK

This beautiful little book combines the observations of an ornithologist and the brilliance of a philosopher. The result is a fascinating look at birds and people, and how much there is to be learned from them and ourselves. Chapter 16, Bird Brains, is my personal favourite.

For anyone on your list who loves clever writing, and birds, this lovely compact edition is exactly what you need.
MARIANNE'S PICK

This heartfelt story about a group of orphans running away from a residential school during the great depression, is nothing short of captivating. The struggles, conflicts, and deep hardships endeared the intimately written main characters to me, and I felt a deep connection to them in ways only great writing can do. The best book I've read this year.
JAN'S PICK

A young man discovers a forgotten book in a library detailing an event from his childhood. I couldn’t read it fast enough but at the same time I didn’t ever want it to end. As good as, if not better than Night Circus.
ANTONIA'S PICK

A beautiful telling of one woman’s coming of age story, as well as a careful documenting of her current and essential work as a botanist, biochemist, and conservationist. Deeply encouraging, sensible, and informative, Diana Beresford-Kroeger calls us to be courageous and undaunted, taking one step at a time in our pursuit and responsibility to protect the environment we all share and depend upon, to be inspired and to inspire others, and ultimately to “speak for the trees”.
TOM'S PICK

This comprehensive encyclopedic style book includes information about a fantastic cross-section of historical, philosophical, and practical topics. For an inquiring mind young or old, this book would make a wonderful gift.
RACHAEL'S PICK

Attention animal lovers: Sherman is a must for your Christmas list. A charming, feel-good memoir about rescuing a donkey from a hoarding situation and giving him a purpose: burro racing! I learned so much about donkeys, goats, running, Amish culture and the resilience of both human and animal spirit. And now I want a donkey!

WINNER OF THE 2019 BOOKER PRIZE

Sparklingly witty and filled with emotion, centering voices we often see othered, and written in an innovative fast-moving form that borrows technique from poetry, Girl, Woman, Other  is a richly textured social novel that shows a side of Britain we rarely see, one that reminds us of all that connects us to our neighbors, even in times when we are encouraged to be split apart.

Paperback
In the 14th installment in The Irish Country Books Series , bestselling author Patrick Taylor continues the story of his beloved characters while vividly bringing the daily joys and struggles of this delightful Irish village to life.

Hardcover
Set in London in 2018,  Agent Running in the Field  follows a twenty-six year old solitary figure who, in a desperate attempt to resist the new political turbulence swirling around him, makes connections that will take him down a very dangerous path.

Hardcover
New York, late summer, 2000. A party in a Manhattan apartment, hosted by a wealthy young activist. A young man, Ben, meets a young woman, Kate, and they begin to fall in love. At first Ben isn’t that concerned when Kate tells him about the recurring dream she’s had since childhood. In the dream, she’s transported to the past, where she lives a second life as Emilia, the mistress of a nobleman in Elizabethan England. But for Kate, the dream becomes increasingly real, to the point where it threatens to overwhelm her life.

Paperback
The latest book in Alexander McCall Smith's popular 44 Scotland Street series.

Releasing in hardcover, December 3rd.

Once again, Scotland Street teems with the daily triumphs and challenges of those who call it home, and provides a warm, wise, and witty chronicle of the affairs in this corner of the world.

Hardcover
After much tragedy and violence, Jack Taylor has at long last landed at contentment. Of course, he still knocks back too much Jameson and dabbles in uppers, but he has a new woman in his life, a freshly bought apartment, and little sign of trouble on the horizon. Once again, trouble comes to him, this time in the form of a wealthy Frenchman who wants Jack to investigate the double-murder of his twin sons. Jack is meanwhile roped into looking after his girlfriend’s nine-year-old son, and is in for a shock with the appearance of a character out of his past.
