A chilly December could bring some frost and sleet, but nothing family and friends gathering in warmth couldn't treat. We'll be welcoming a new year with this one winding down; there's still plenty to do, so look for happenings around town.

The Gig Harbor Annual Tree Lighting is on December 7
Holiday Open House and Ugly Sweater Contest on December 7
NEW this year, the Gig Harbor Downtown Waterfront Alliance introduces their Holiday Open House and Ugly Sweater Contest on December 7! Here's how it works:
  • Ugly Sweater participants check in at Boujie on Pioneer to participate
  • Merchants and customers will vote for their favorite ugly sweater as participants shop downtown
  • Contest ends promptly at 4 pm
  • Contest winner will be announced at the Gig Harbor Holiday Tree Lighting by Mayor Kuhn

Harbor WildWatch Activities in December
Take an underwater journey of Gig Harbor Bay without getting wet! While you stay warm and dry on the dock, divers use an underwater video camera to live stream exactly what they encounter below the surface. The December Pier Into the Night Live Dive will be happening during the Annual Gig Harbor Tree Lighting.

Gig Harbor Library's Gingerbread House Event is on December 7
The Gig Harbor Library will be hosting a Gingerbread House event on Saturday, December 7, 10:30 am - 1:30 pm. Attendees can make and decorate their own gingerbread house. All supplies provided while they last. All ages; under 6 with an adult. To register, click here.

Gig Harbor Night Market: December Edition is on Dec. 7

Breakfast with Santa at Goodman Middle School. This year Breakfast with Santa will be held at Goodman Middle School, from 9 - 11 am. The Gig Harbor Kiwanis will be providing a pancake breakfast. Please register online.

Saturday, December 7, 1 pm:
Holiday Wreath Making Workshop at Rosedale Hall. PenMet Parks is hosting a workshop from 1 – 4 pm, for creating a one of a kind contemporary holiday wreath, with a beautiful selection of seasonal foliage, berries, dried accessories and more. Class participants are encouraged to bring items they would like to incorporate into their designs. $65 includes materials and treats, click here to register.

Saturday, December 14, 1 pm (10 am session is sold out):
Cookies with Mrs. Claus at Sehmel Park Pavilion. Cookie decorating, a holiday craft, warm beverages, holiday music, and a story to be read by Mrs. Claus! Parent participation required. December 8
Enjoy community caroling while awaiting the arrival of the Argosy Christmas Ship!

The Downtown Waterfront Alliance's popular community caroling event, Hark the Harbor, returns to Skansie Brother’s Park on Sunday, December 8th at 6:15 pm. Songbooks and candles will be provided. At approximately 6:50 pm, the Argosy Christmas Ship, all aglow with festive lights, will be broadcasting beautiful holiday music performed by the Olympia Youth Choir.

Luminary Walk at Haven of Rest is on December 8
The annual Luminary Walk and Remembrance at Haven of Rest will be held 5 - 7 pm on December 8th. Candle lighting, live music, quiet reflection, letter writing, a gifted speaker, luminary walk and reception mark this event. Click here for more information and to register.
16th Year of GHPD Holiday Heroes
The Jaycox-Gig Harbor Police Benevolent Fund, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, will hold its annual Holiday Heroes event on December 10. The event allows local children in need the opportunity to get to know the Gig Harbor Police Officers and other law enforcement personnel while holiday shopping at the Gig Harbor Target store. Each child is provided spending money donated by community members and local service clubs, including funding from the Jaycox Gig Harbor Police Benevolent Fund. The children also get to tour the police department, have breakfast and lunch with their law enforcement shopping buddies and ride back to school in a police vehicle.

Major local sponsors for the Holiday Heroes program include Gig Harbor Target and the Galaxy Theatres Luxury + IMAX in Gig Harbor. Donations are being accepted at the Gig Harbor Police Department (GHPD). One hundred percent of all donations go towards the children's spending money for Holiday Heroes. You can drop checks off at the GHPD or mail to GHPD, 3510 Grandview St, Gig Harbor, WA 98335. Please make the check out to the Jaycox Fund, or call 253-851-2236.

Light Up the Night - 6th Annual St. Lucia's Festival on December 13
Celebrate Gig Harbor’s Scandinavian heritage at Harbor History Museum’s 6th Annual Light Up the Night: St. Lucia Festival on Friday, December 13, 5:30 - 7:30 pm. Crafts, games, and traditional Scandinavian snacks are the star at this family-friendly event. $3 admission for all ages. Harbor History Museum members and their families get in FREE.

Meaningful Movies in Gig Harbor is on December 13
Meaningful Movies in Gig Harbor presents the documentary, "Sea of Life" on December 13 at Agnus Dei Church, 11051 Peacock Hill. Snacks and socializing at 6 pm, movie at 6:30 pm. The event is free, donation is gratefully accepted.
Holiday Hayrides with Santa on December 13 & 14

December 14
The historic Eddon Boatyard will be transformed into Santa's BoatShop on Saturday, December 14, 10 am - 4 pm. Children are invited to build and paint model boats at this festive holiday event. Click here for more information and to view available 30 minute sessions.
Lighted Boat Parade is on December 14
Presented by the Gig Harbor Yacht Club, the Lighted Boat Parade showcases the creativity of area boaters. This beautiful, local tradition has boats circling the harbor, spreading holiday cheer to onlookers gathered along the water's edge. The parade is on Saturday, December 14, beginning at 5 pm. Lions Club Giving Tree Program Runs through December 14
The Gig Harbor Lions Club has supplied businesses throughout the harbor with gift tags to be displayed on Christmas trees for their Giving Tree program. Last year, over 2,000 gifts were distributed through Peninsula FISH food bank and the Boys & Girls Club. The Lions Club is encouraging the community to once again help kids have a happy holiday season. The earlier the Lions Club can receive gifts, the better, with December 14th being the final due date for returning a present to the store. Deck the Harbor is a storefront decorating contest that started on November 29 and runs through December 24. Enjoy beautifully decorated windows at businesses along the downtown waterfront and vote for a People's Choice Award through December 24. Click here for more information.

Reception for Three Outgoing Councilmembers on December 9
The public is invited to attend a reception for our three outgoing Councilmembers, Ken Malich, Michael Perrow and Spencer Hutchins, on Monday, December 9th at 4:45 pm. The City is grateful for these leaders who have given of their time in service to their community Please join us in acknowledging them on December 9th.
Cushman Trail Phase 5 Open House is on December 12
The City of Gig Harbor is presenting the final alignment for Phase 5 of the Cushman Trail on Thursday, December 12, 5 - 6:30 pm at the Civic Center. Join members of the Public Works Department and project consultants to learn more about the final alignment and the project's next steps. 

Volunteers Needed for Parks Commission Positions
The City has openings on the Parks Commission. Volunteer members must live within Gig Harbor city limits. Members serve three-year terms. The Parks Commission meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 5:30 pm. Submission deadline is December 5.

2020 Census: Everyone Counts
The 2020 Census is set to begin in mid-March.In addition to being used to draw federal, state and local political boundaries, census data is used to distribute federal funds to states, counties and cities. Private and public agencies, organizations, businesses and others use census data to help decide where to build schools, roads, and facilities for health care, child care, senior centers and other facilities.
