Harbor WildWatch Activities
in February
Take an underwater journey of Gig Harbor Bay without getting wet! While you stay warm and dry on the dock, divers use an underwater video camera to live stream exactly what they encounter below the surface.

Dr. Kaeli Swift will take us to the fascinatingly complex world of corvids (crows, ravens, jays). Video, audio, and print reports of Dr. Swift's research have been featured by National Geographic, PBS, the New York Times, The Atlantic, Ologies podcast, Science Friday, and many others. Suggested donation of $5, free for Steward Club members. 

Harbor History Museum Events
February 4, Tuesday at 6 pm: Gig Harbor Literary Society meeting, dedicated to exploring the literary world of historical fiction, nonfiction, and other works of interest. This event is FREE and open to the public. Seats are limited; RSVPs are encouraged. The book for the February meeting is "The Paragon Hotel" by Lyndsay Faye, a historical suspense novel.

February 15, Saturday at 6 pm - Sweetheart's Swing Dance at Gig Harbor Yacht Club: Featuring dance performances by Pacific Ballroom Dance Co.’s premier National Champion team and the live beat of a local swing band. A teaching artist will guide attendees through the steps of the popular East Coast swing before letting them cut a rug the rest of the night! Heavy appetizers, beer, wine and non-alcoholic beverages will be on hand. Tickets are $75 and can be purchased at the Museum's Buy Tickets page.

February 26, Wednesday, at 6 pm: "Who Was Chief Seattle?", a Humanities in the Harbor presentation with historian David M. Buerge.

Winter Sip & Stroll is on February 8
This popular tasting event along Gig Harbor’s beautiful waterfront will have you sampling Northwest wines from 17 wineries, brews from 5 breweries, spirits, cider and tasty small bites at businesses serving as “Stroll Stops.”

Tastings at the Sip & Stroll begin at 12 pm and end at 4 pm, with the wine store, located at the check-in location at the 7 Seas Brewing Event Space remaining open until 5 pm. The Alliance will provide complimentary transportation throughout the waterfront to make it easy to visit all of the Stroll Stops.

Participants will receive a commemorative tasting glass, a map of all the Stroll Stop locations and exhibitors and 15 sip tickets for alcohol.

Early-bird tickets can be purchased online for $35 through February 2nd. After that, General Admission tickets can be purchased online for $40 through February 7 if tickets still remain. Tickets can be purchased the day of (February 8) online for $45 if tickets still remain.

Live music will be featured at the Harbor History Museum (Irish Band Wind in the Heather) and at the new Edward Jones kitty corner to Anthony,s (pianist Elijah Bossenbroek). Purchase tickets here:
Annual Father Daughter Dance is on February 8
Gig Harbor BoatShop Classes
Session runs February 12 - 14, 6 - 9 pm at the Eddon Boatyard Joiner Shop. This workshop will continue lofting the dinghy that was started in the introductory workshop.

Participants will learn the basics of name board carving using traditional chisels and gouges. Honor your boat or your family with a proper name board.

Registration Deadline for 72 Hour Film Competition is February 14
Registration for the 2020 Gig Harbor Film Festival’s annual 72 Hour Film Competition is open at gigharborfilm.org

The competition offers the opportunity for local filmmakers of all ages and skill levels to share their stories through the art of film. Filmmakers compete within the age categories of 13 and Under, 14-18, and 19 and Up. On March 12 at 6 pm, the competition clock officially starts. The filming period continues throughout the weekend and ends at 6 pm on March 15. All footage must be shot and edited during this 72 Hour period, and completed films must be submitted by the Sunday deadline to be eligible.

Meaningful Movies in Gig Harbor is on February 14
Meaningful Movies in Gig Harbor presents the documentary, "Iran: Yesterday and Tomorrow" on February 14 at Agnus Dei Church, 11051 Peacock Hill. Snacks and socializing at 6 pm, movie at 6:30 pm. The event is free, donation is gratefully accepted.

Gig Harbor Senior Center's Programs for February
The Gig Harbor Senior Center, located at Peninsula Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall, 6509 38th Ave NW, hosts many programs like the fun and educational Wisdom Wednesdays, and serves noon lunches on Mondays & Wednesdays provided by Catholic Community Services. Every Thursday is Parents Laser - Adults 18+ with a purchase of a game for a kid 17 & under will receive 1 FREE laser game per day (on Thursdays).

Every Saturday Night is Late Night $1 Bowl - Bowl for ONLY $1, every Saturday night between 10 pm - Midnight and every Sunday between 6 - 9 pm.

The Gig Harbor Arts Commission is sponsoring the artistic carving and/or embellishment of select tree snags throughout the city. The deadline to submit applications is March 27, 2020.

Three New Councilmembers Sworn in at January 13 Council Meeting
Three new Councilmembers were sworn in at the beginning of the January 13 Council Meeting:

  • Robyn Denson, Position 5
  • Tracie Markley, Position 4
  • Le Rodenberg, Position 6

They will be serving four-year terms. We are honored that they want to serve our community and welcome them!
New City Administrator Started in January
The City of Gig Harbor recently welcomed Bob Larson as the new City Administrator. Larson is an experienced municipal manager who has served in senior management positions since 1991 including the position of chief administrative officer in four cities. 

Reminder: Clearing Icy Sidewalks Lies with Property Owners
February weather can have temps that get near or below freezing, causing icy sidewalks around town. A reminder that, per City Code: Section 12.04.050 GHMC, adjacent property owners are responsible for clearing their own sidewalks of ice or snow.
Volunteers Needed for Open Arts Commission & Parks Commission Positions
The City is seeking citizens to serve on the Arts Commission and Parks Commission.The Arts Commission guides and recommends on public art to the Council. The Parks Commission advises the Council on the development, maintenance, and operation of parks and recreation facilities, among other duties. Next Coffee with Kit is on March 3
Save the date for the next "Coffee with Kit," on Tuesday, March 3.

Mayor Kit Kuhn will be at the Kimball Coffeehouse, 6659 Kimball Dr. a102, from 7 - 8 am, on March 3, for citizens to have a chance to talk with him and let him know their thoughts in a casual setting.
Cushman Trail Safety Update
The City of Gig Harbor, in coordination with local emergency responders, PenMet Parks, and Tacoma Public Utilities, recently funded and installed Emergency Locator Signage on the full length of the Cushman Trail.

The new markers, located every quarter mile, correspond to GPS locations which will help first responders find users on the trail more quickly and efficiently. If you experience an emergency on the trail, report your nearest locator position to emergency personnel.
Jeni Listens on February 26
Councilmember Jeni Woock hosts monthly listening sessions at the Harbor General Store, 7804 Pioneer Way, from 6 - 7 pm.
