12th Annual Gig Harbor Film Festival Kicks Off with a BOOM!
The 2019 Gig Harbor Film Festival will be held September 26 - 29 at the Galaxy Uptown Luxury+ IMAX theatre. The festivities will get underway on September 26 with an opening night screening of BOOM: A Film About the Sonics. Filmmaker Jordan Albertsen will be in attendance along with special guest Tacoma garage band The Sonics. More than 100 visiting filmmakers will be hosted by the festival throughout the weekend and many will be in attendance at their film screenings to answer audience questions and sign autographs. Festival organizers encourage film-goers to purchase VIP Passes to fully experience all the event has to offer. VIP Pass holders enjoy early entrance to all films, including opening night; entrance to all parties, the Kiwanis VIP Lounge and the Seattle Seahawks Beast Bus on Saturday!

Gig Harbor Night Market: September Edition is on Sept. 7
Enjoy art, music, food, vendors and beer at the Gig Harbor Night Market on September 7, 4 - 9 pm. Evening fun for all ages and free! Join in on this community event at 7 Seas Brewing, 3006 Judson St. #110

Harbor Hounds is on September 14
Gig Harbor's pet friendly community event, Harbor Hounds, is on Saturday, September 14, 9 am - 3 pm at Skansie Brothers Park. There'll be dog-oriented sponsors offering products, services and rescue dogs for adoption; an agility course to try with agility trainer, K9 Companion Academy's Margarita Knowlton; contests to show off your dog, and many more fun things to do! Celebrate your love for dogs with other dog lovers at this fundraiser for Midday Rotary Club of Gig Harbor with proceeds going to Prison Pet Partnership, Scholarships and other local and international charities. Race For A Soldier September 15
Race For A Soldier 10 Miler and 5k will be held on Sunday, September 15, starting at 7:45 am at the Tom Taylor Family YMCA.

The Permission To Start Dreaming Foundation hosts the event to inspire hope and action in the community and provide access to solutions for veterans, affected by Post Traumatic Stress and Traumatic Brain Injury, and their families via professional services, challenging peer adventures, education and spiritual devotion. If you're ready for the 10 Miler or prefer a slightly shorter haul (the 5K run/walk), this is an amazing event to be a part of. When you support this race - whether you run, walk, volunteer, donate, simply watch or all of the above - you are making a difference in the lives our brave soldiers and their families.

SUP in the Harbor is on
September 22
The 3rd Annual SUP in the Harbor is Sunday, September 22, 1 – 3 pm. Celebrate our schools and community at this fun event for the whole family. There’ll be games, activities and food onshore and paddle board relays and a parade on the water.

Beach Basket 50th Anniversary Event on September 21
Please join the Beach Basket Gift Shops on Saturday, September 21, from 12 – 3 pm as they celebrate 50 years of business in Gig Harbor!

Help the Schmidtke family celebrate this milestone in their lives.There’ll be free food and beverages, and you can spin a wheel for prizes and discounts plus 25% off any purchase. There are also commemorative ball caps for the first 300 people (design on hat is pictured on the right).

Music will be provided by Wounded Mic so bring a camping chair and join the fun!

Tales at the BoatShop, authentic storytelling for children in an authentic boatyard environment, is on Saturday, September 15. Program is free,Open to ages five and up, the program is free with preferred pre-registration. Click here for more information.

Saturday Makers Market Activities
The following are activities happening at the Peninsula Marketplace,5503 Wollochet Dr. NW, in September.

Saturday, September 7, 1 - 3 pm: Rock Painting Class, Instructor, Beth Neff, will help you learn the basic skills of rock painting. Areas to be covered: rock preparation, painting methods, sealing and rules about hiding. Cost: $10 per person which includes all supplies. Class is pre-paid and non-refundable. More info here.

Saturday, September 28, 9 am - 3 pm: Pumpkin Glass Show featuring over thousands of hand blown glass pumpkins crafted by local glass artisans. Free admission, live entertainment. Here for more info.
Harbor History Museum Hosts Concert Series On September 18
with Folk Musicians Gangspil Trio
Gangspil Trio, (playing old dance tunes and songs from every corner of their Scandinavian home country, Denmark), will be performing at Harbor History Museum on Wednesday, September 18, starting at 7:30 pm. Admission is $20 for Harbor History Museum members and $25 for Non-Members. Meaningful Movies in Gig Harbor is on September 13
Meaningful Movies in Gig Harbor presents the documentary, "Coming of Age in Aging America," on September 13 at Agnus Dei Church, 11051 Peacock Hill. Snacks and socializing at 6 pm, movie at 6:30 pm. The event is free, donation is gratefully accepted. Special Guest will be members of the Gig Harbor Senior Center.

September Activities
Join Harbor WildWatch at their 5th Annual Make Waves fundraiser on September 12, 6 - 8 pm at the Gig Harbor Yacht Club. There’ll be food and drinks from Sunshine's All Naturals Catering, Heritage Distilling, Taylor Shellfish Farms, a Raise the Paddle event, and music from pianist Elijah Bossenbock. All proceeds directly support youth environmental education. Click here for more info. 

The September Cocktails & Fishtails is on September 18, at Ocean5, 5:30 - 7 pm. The topic is Climate Change and Impacts on our Health. Cost is $5 at the door, free admission for Harbor WildWatch Steward Club members.

Harbor WildWatch short film "Salish Sea After Dark," was accepted into the Gig Harbor Film Festival and Ireland Wildlife Film Festival to make its world premiere this month! Produced by Communications Specialist, Carly Vester, the film focuses on community science in the Salish Sea. Check out the film's trailer here.

Hands On Art Rolls Out New Project in September
Peninsula Hands On Art is proud to be present “Hanging with Calder” as our first project of this school year. Designed by local jewelry artist, Mayor Kit Kuhn, students will create their own pounded copper pendants inspired by historical artist Alexander Calder. Over 4,000 K-5 students from nine local elementary schools will have the opportunity to work with authentic jewelry making tools and learn about the amazing work of Alexander Calder. Gig Harbor Canoe & Kayak Racing Team Wins Nationals
Congratulations to the Gig Harbor Canoe & Kayak Racing Team for winning their seventh National Title in Georgia this August! According to Alan Anderson, former head coach, "Winning a championship requires a huge commitment from the athletes and coaches and a ton of help from families and friends. The Gig Harbor community has been very generous and supportive over the years, so it is an honor to bring the "Yonkers " trophy back to Gig Harbor." Gig Harbor Canoe & Kayak Racing Team's Nevin Harrison
is Going to the 2020 Summer Olympics!
On August 23, 17-year old Nevin Harrison from the Gig Harbor Canoe and Kayak Racing Team, became America's first canoe World Champion! She also secured a U.S. spot in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics as a contender for the Gold in the first year that women's canoe events have been included in the Olympics (after a 20 year battle for gender equity in the sport). There will be a recognition presentation on Nevin's remarkable achievement at the September 9 City Council Meeting.
Call for Art: 2020 Gig Harbor Garden Tour
The Gig Harbor Garden Tour Association invites local artists to submit two-dimensional garden related artwork to be considered for the publicity poster for the 23rd Annual Gig Harbor Garden Tour. The selected artist will not receive a monetary stipend but will benefit from many facets of publicity and exposure of the Tour such as posters, cards, calendar, press releases and program booklet. The selected artist will be able to have a complimentary booth space with the 2020 Garden Tour.

YMCA Healthy Living Expo on September 25
The Healthy Living Expo will be held on September 25, 10 am - 2 pm at at the Tom Taylor Family YMCA. This Healthy Living fair is for the spirit, mind and body, and will include helpful information, screenings, speakers, art and fun. Open to members and non-members.
PenMet Parks Teen Trivia Night at Ocean5 on September 27
Teens, grab your friends and put your pop culture knowledge to the test a Teen Trivia Night on September 27, 7 pm. Hosted by PenMet Parks and Ocean5, snacks and drinks provided by Table 47.
Gig Harbor BoatShop is Offering Family Boat Building Scholarship
Gig Harbor BoatShop is offering the first ever scholarship to its popular Family Boat Building Program. The scholarship is designed to promote youth empowerment and development, team building, and technical boat building and wood working skills by providing a family or team with access to the Family Boat Building Program. Stinson Avenue Watermain Replacement Continues Through September
The Stinson Avenue Watermain Replacement Project will be continuing through September. The project replaces approximately 4000 linear feet of watermain. Within the project limits there will be a single-lane closure with alternating traffic for the majority of the project. There will be some work performed in Grandview Street, between Pioneer Way and Stinson Ave. Minimal work will take place in the Pioneer/Grandview intersection, however, this work is mostly limited to night-work to minimize the impact to the public. 

It is suggested to use alternative routes as identified in the diagram above, as it is expected there will be significant vehicular delay in the vicinity of Stinson Avenue throughout the duration of the project.

Accepting Lodging Tax Fund Applications for 2020
A reminder that the City of Gig Harbor is accepting applications for Tourism and Visitor related events and projects (2020 Lodging Tax Fund). Applications are due September 20, 2019 by 5 pm.

PSE Roadway Paving Work
Puget Sound Energy is restoring the roadway paving from the intersection of Rosedale St. and Skansie Ave., north on Skansie to City limits. Work in the intersection of Rosedale and Skansie and 500’ north on Skansie is from 8 pm to 6 am (night work). All other work 500’ north of the intersection is from 5 pm to 6 am (night work). 
"NW" Directional Update Effective September 30
A reminder that addresses within city limits are being modified to no longer contain the “NW” directional designator.

The City is implementing these modifications to ensure they continue to provide their citizens with the highest & most defined level of safety available. For more information, visit the City's website.

Vanpools Traveling Over the Narrows Bridge No Longer Required to Pay Tolls
Do you know there’s a new way to save money on your commute over the Narrows Bridge? As of Aug. 1, Vanpools that travel over the Narrows are no longer required to pay the toll. Riders can save about $1,200 a year in tolls by taking a vanpool, plus save wear-and-tear on their car. There are also incentives going on now for starting or joining a vanpool.
