Day Adventures

South Fork Mineral Creek Trail #798

Old burn scar with views that lead to a mixed conifer-lined creek with flowing water.

Out and back.

Under 4 miles round trip.

The trail leaves Highway 159 just west of Willow Creek.

Thanks to Santa Fe Prep for removing over 250 logs from this trail.

Note: the tread is still narrow on the switchbacks, so hiking poles are advised and equine riders should avoid this trail until the tread can be repaired.

Summer Day Adventures in the Gila

Where to go in the Gila during the hot summer months......Things to consider

River Trails

Pros: These day hikes are nice since there is water nearby and it is easy to cool off in cool flowing water.

Cons: Leafy vegetation along these trails grows quickly and copiously, making it hard to find the trail.

Always watch for snakes and poison ivy.

Trail Examples: West Fork, Middle Fork, Snow Lake, and Gilita Creek

High Altitude Trails

Pros: Cooler temperatures due to the higher altitude.

Cons: Potential lightning hazard

Trail Examples: Hillsboro Peak, Signal Peak, Tadpole Ridge, West Fork Trail from Willow Creek.

Backcountry Adventures

Cooper Mesa / Iron Creek Mesa Loop

This loop travels in canyon bottoms with mixed conifer and mesas with meadows and ponderosa forests. It offers lots of variety and a great way to explore the northern side of the Gila Wilderness.
