According to the International Rescue Committee (IRC), their Silver Spring office has served more than 700 Haitian newcomers and other Caribbean nationals seeking resettlement help. Over half of the newcomers served are Montgomery County residents with the remainder living in Prince George's County.
The Caribbean Liaison has been conducting resource outreach for 100 more newcomers in East County at the church Eglise de Dieu de Silver Spring.
OCP’s Caribbean Laision, Outreach Manager Shawn Ellis, and African Liaison Harrrieta Shangarai were on hand to support the Thanksgiving townhall-dinner for Haitian newcomers in East County. They were joined by members of the Haitian interfaith group and representatives of the Association of Haitian Professionals for a time of communion with the newcomers. Immigration lawyer Genevieve Augustin fielded immigration questions from attendees.
