Message from the President

This week I attended the Delaware State Human Resources Conference & Expo sponsored by the Delaware SHRM because so many of our State Chamber policy priorities center around human resource (HR) issues. For example, we remain steadfast in our opposition to recreational uses of marijuana until spot tests for impairment, precedence of employer drug policies and more are part of any future state policy. The State Chamber is also a leader in workforce development issues and is pursuing innovative policies to retrain underemployed Delawareans. These are only a couple examples of where our member interests and HR issues are inextricably linked, and future policy choices have impacts on large and small employers alike.

Gilman Bowl to E. Thomas Harvey, III

In a surprise announcement at the 21st Annual Marvin S. Gilman Superstars in Business Awards Luncheon, the Delaware State Chamber of Commerce awarded the esteemed Gilman Bowl to E. Thomas (Thom) Harvey, III. Mr. Harvey accepted the award with his family, colleagues and fellow small business leaders in attendance.

The Gilman Bowl was established as a tribute to small business leadership. It is named in memory of Marvin S. Gilman, who served as an exemplary leader and a paragon of small business in Delaware. The identity of the recipient of the Gilman Bowl was held confidential until its presentation at the awards luncheon.

“Since the beginning, I’ve gone into work every day with the mindset that we, as a company, are not perfect and can always look for ways to be better,” said Mr. Harvey upon accepting the award. “I wouldn’t be standing up here today if it wasn’t for the team behind me.”

names Joseph Lubertazzi, Jr. chairman of the firm's executive committee

The law firm of McCarter & English, LLP is pleased to announce that Joseph Lubertazzi, Jr. has been named Chairman of the firm’s Executive Committee, effective October 1, 2019. Lubertazzi has been with McCarter & English for almost 35 years and is a partner in the firm’s Bankruptcy & Commercial Litigation practice. He has served on the Executive Committee since 2015. He will succeed Michael P. Kelly, who decided to step down after a decade as Chairman of the Executive Committee. Kelly will devote himself to doing what he loves, trying cases.
