Give Big, Give Great!

The biggest local fundraiser of the year officially starts on March 11th... it's never too early to give! The Kitsap Great Give has begun!

The Kitsap Great Give is a 24-hour "give-day" that unites our community to support the many nonprofit organizations that make Kitsap a great place to live - for all of us. In a single day, more than $1.5 million can be invested in the direct support of our community through donations from individuals, businesses, and organizations to a wide variety of nonprofits. Last year, the event generated $1.47 million from 3,323 donors through 6,844 gifts to support 363 local nonprofit organizations. This year, our goal is to raise $40,000!

Spay Week Recap

February was Spay and Neuter Awareness Month. Did you know that just one unaltered female cat and her offspring could produce 420,000 cats in only seven years? And in six years, a female dog and her offspring could produce 67,000 puppies?

To help reduce pet overpopulation in our community, Kitsap Humane Society spays and neuters thousands of dogs and cats in Kitsap and Mason counties every year.

During this year's 'Spay Week' operations, the KHS Vet Services staff and volunteers (shown above) completed:

• 107 cat spays and 98 cat neuters, providing surgery to 205 owned animals

• 14 shelter surgeries, including foreign body extractions and an enucleation

• 7 trap-neuter-return appointments for community cats

• 1 emergency dystocia procedure

Thank you to everyone - staff, volunteers, and donors, for making our annual 'Spay Week' such a success!

Low-cost Spay and Neuter services are available year-round, please visit our website for more information!

KHS Receives Capacity Building Grant

The Bainbridge Community Foundation (BCF) has been a significant supporter of KHS, supplying thousands in funding for various projects to better our campus and expand our lifesaving mission. This year, KHS was a recipient of a BCF 2025 Capacity Building Grant.

BCF recognizes that one goal most organizations share is to perform their work more efficiently and effectively. This grant is part of a program to assess if focused grant making can help achieve that goal. Capacity building is distinguishable from direct program services, general operating support or capital expenses in that they typically seek to increase the knowledge, skill level, and/or efficiency of a nonprofit board and/or staff. In the case of KHS, our Capacity Building Grant will be used to allow three of our leaders to become Certified Animals Welfare Administrators, the only leadership credential in the animal welfare field.

Additionally, Community Grant Cycle grant funding from BCF supports KHS' Foster Care program and low-cost spay and neuter programs - just two of the many ways KHS works to support our community.

Thank you again to the Bainbridge Community Foundation for your partnership and for supporting our 2025 goals!

The Pups Hoping to be Your Lucky Charm!

Hi, I'm Sparkle Socks, a 1-year-old terrier gentleman with tons of energy. I love a good game of fetch, and I'll give you bonus points if it's a tennis ball that has a squeaker! Treat snob? Couldn't be me. I love all treats! Looking for a handsome guy? That is me! No wonder they named me Sparkle Socks, I shine for everyone around me. I have tons of energy, and because I like to run and jump, I'd probably do best with older kids and teens. The best part? I'm dog social - I'd love to have a good dog sibling but would be just as happy on my own. If you're up for an energetic, playful companion then I'm your guy!

MEET SPARKLE SOCKS!

Hi, I'm Jared! I'm a handsome bunny with a big personality, and I like to keep things on my own terms. I'm litter box trained -seriously, I never have accidents! I also don't chew on anything I shouldn't, which makes me a great free-roam candidate. Right now, I have the run of the kitchen and bathroom in my foster home, and I love to stretch out for a big bunny flop right in the middle of the floor. I'm still learning that people can be pretty great, so a patient family would be ideal for me! I'm curious about the cats in my foster home, and I like to watch them from a safe distance. I also love looking out the back door and taking in the world. If you're looking for a well-mannered, independent bunny who just needs a little time to warm up, I could be your guy! Think we could be a match?

MEET JARED!

February Adoptions

We are always so excited to celebrate the new family bonds created here at KHS. From our Vet Services team to the Animal Care staff, as well as our mighty team of foster families, there are many hands that play an important part in finding the perfect home for an animal. Our sweet friend Teddy found his family in February along with 160 other pets including 64 cats, 43 dogs, 38 kittens, 10 puppies, 4 rabbits, and a chicken!

We'd love to hear how life is treating your KHS adoptee! Submit your KHS alum's Happy Tail for a chance to have them featured across our social media platforms!

Fundraisers for the Animals!

We are always so grateful for the support from many community partners, and we love to hear the creative ways these partners are fundraising for our mission! A big shoutout to Jessie, Dan, and Robin at Pet Town Port Orchard for their recent supply fundraiser. Customers stuffed baskets full of treats and toys for their favorite adoptable animals. We also want to recognize the Northwest School of Dance for choosing KHS as the beneficiary to their 2025 Kindness Campaign!

NSD Dancers Clover and Elaina designed t-shirts, tote bags, and backpacks for studio dancers and their friends and family to purchase, with a portion of the sales donated to KHS. The designs are adorable! Great job Clover and Elaina! Thank you so much to all of our community partners. The pups and kitties here at the shelter are so thankful for your donation! Nominations Now Being Accepted!

Kitsap Humane Society’s Apple of Our Eye Award is named in honor of former Washington State Representative and KHS Board Member Sherry Appleton and we are now accepting nominations for the 2025 award! Presented annually at our Animal Krackers Gala, the award recognizes individuals or organizations who have made significant contributions to the success or development of Kitsap Humane Society or have made extraordinary contributions to animal welfare in the Pacific Northwest.

Honorees are chosen by a specially selected panel of local officials and Kitsap Humane Society friends, volunteers, and staff. Honorees, living or deceased, will be selected based on their contribution in the areas of animal care, leadership, innovation, and commitment to KHS’s mission to rescue, rehabilitate, and find loving homes for thousands of animals every year and to serve as a nationally recognized model for animal welfare institutions. Anyone can nominate an influential individual or organization by filling out a nomination form.

Applications will be accepted until June 30, 2025. You can download an application by clicking below.
