Inspiring People to Give Back to Sustain and Advance the Community We Love

Door County Community Foundation

February 2025

Dear Bret,

A massive shift in charitable giving is underway that could have profound implications for communities everywhere. For decades, charities have relied upon the generosity of the Silent Generation (born 1928-1945) and Baby Boomers (born 1946-1964) to fund their operations and help them realize their missions. The generosity of both generations is best characterized as using traditional giving channels and a deep loyalty to the institutions themselves. Over the last twenty-five years, these generations have given generously to arts groups, educational institutions, and civic-improvement organizations that have become the pillars of countless communities across the United States.

Since Door County’s population is one of the oldest in Wisconsin, and far older than the national average, it has also been one of the prime beneficiaries of this incredible generational largesse. Most of us can easily name many of the philanthropic giants whose charitable giving has made Door County’s renaissance possible.

However, this time is coming to an end. All of the Baby Boomers are now in their 60s or 70s and the youngest members of the Silent Generation are turning 80. It won’t be long before charitable giving will be driven by a new generation of philanthropists.

The Lily Family School of Philanthropy at Indiana University released a new study, “The Next Generation of Philanthropy,” which provides insight into how Millennials (born 1981-1996) and Generation Z (born 1997-2010) view charitable giving. These two younger generations have a radically different approach from their parents and grandparents.

Door County Community Foundation

Welcome: Amanda Brooker, Philanthropic Services Officer

We're pleased to announce that Amanda Brooker has joined the Community Foundation's professional staff as our newest Philanthropic Services Officer.

An East Coast transplant, Amanda moved to Wisconsin in 1997 where she and her Green Bay-native husband could raise their family. Once their two daughters graduated college, they moved into their Door County forever home in 2017.

Amanda has an extensive public relations and marketing career with experience in the association, agency, corporate, public education and non-profit fields. However, it was always the community engagement and social impact aspects of her work that brought her the most fulfillment. Her role with the Door County Community Foundation allows her to continue doing what she loves most—making a difference—and she’s excited to contribute to this community she loves.

When not at work, Amanda loves the outdoors, doting on her grandkids, reading, and working on her old farmhouse and the land around it. She and her husband raise and breed registered Icelandic sheep and keep a small flock of chickens. They are also slowly removing invasive species from their land.

Whether you're a donor that needs assistance with your Fund at the Community Foundation or a charity that is looking for a grant, the Philanthropic Services team is able to help. You can email Amanda at amanda@givedoorcounty.org and Adam at adam@givedoorcounty.org. Of course, you can also reach out to Jessica Holland, Vice President of Philanthropic Services, jessica@givedoorcounty.org.

Endowments in Action: Francis Hardy Gallery

The Community Foundation is honored to administer the Francis Hardy Center for the Arts Fund.

Established in 1962 in honor of Francis Howe Hardy, Ephraim's historic Hardy Gallery is solely dedicated to supporting Door County's extensive and vibrant visual art community.

Hardy envisioned the existence of a gallery that would support the development of a growing Door County art community, fostering its growth, and furthering the understanding and appreciation of the visual arts and most importantly, the artists of the Door Peninsula. Upon his passing in 1960, Hardy's vision became a reality thanks to his wife Helen's energy and financial contributions.

Today, the Hardy Gallery, as it is still affectionately known, has programs and initiatives that address the needs of the local artist community, creative enrichment of local youth, and is focused more than ever on Hardy's original vision of educating the public and promoting the visual arts and artists of the Door County Peninsula.
