CHRISTY'S STORY
I have always struggled with my mental health, but I had been able to channel and mask my symptoms until a toxic work environment triggered the onset of a mental health condition in my late 30s. As I struggled to accept and manage a serious mental illness, I spiraled into a suicidal depression. With the support of NAMI LV, therapy, partial programs, peer support groups, medication, and alternative treatments, I recovered and discovered a new purpose and passion: mental health advocacy.

NAMI LV allowed me to utilize my teaching skills and expertise to inspire and guide others in their own journeys by sharing my story in hospitals and out-patient programs, facilitating peer support groups, and teaching Peer-To-Peer classes. Thanks to NAMI LV, I have been featured in a PBS documentary on depression and have worked with government officials regarding mental health legislation. I remain hopeful and confident about my future and I no longer live in fear, shame, and silence.
Ultimately, mental illness has given me far more than it has taken from me. I gained the courage to leave an unhealthy work environment and seek new employment opportunities. I learned to prioritize and put my health and family first. I learned humility and gratitude as I had to accept help from others and respect my new limitations. I learned that self-worth and confidence must come from within, not from external factors such as a job or public recognition. I developed empathy for others through my own struggles. I learned to live in the moment and make the most of each day since the past is over and the future is unknown. I learned to monitor my stress, avoid triggers, exercise regularly, and get enough sleep. I learned I am far more resilient than I thought. As a result of my struggles, I now lead a more balanced, authentic life. No, I am not the same as I was prior to the onset of my illness—
I am stronger, wiser, more compassionate, humble,
thankful, confident and hopeful.
