As the Hudson Catholic Scholarship Program gains momentum and accelerates in growth, we want to give you a feel for select scholarships that have been formed and are open to contributions from among the Hudson Catholic community. These are distinct from scholarships that are privately funded or closed to specific groups.
Det. Marc Dinardo '89 Police Memorial Scholarship
Named for Detective Marc Dinardo of the Jersey City Police Department Emergency Services Unit, who lost his life in the line of duty on July 21, 2009. Awarded to a son or daughter of a police officer, living or deceased. This is a yearly award valued at $2,500.
John P. Higgins '77 Scholarship Fund
Funded by John’s mother, Maureen Denzler, and sister, Eileen Higgins-Gerrity. Awarded in memory of John Higgins, an alumnus who was a loyal supporter of the students, faculty and administration of Hudson Catholic from his graduation until his passing in 2014. Valued at ~$5,000, this scholarship is awarded to two or more students each year, enabling John’s legacy of dedication, commitment and passion for the well-rounded LaSallian education he earned, to continue.
Capt. Mark Lee ’79 Firefighters Memorial Scholarship
Named for Capt. Mark Lee of the Jersey City Fire Department who, on May 9, 2014, succumbed to illness associated with the toxins encountered during the rescue and recovery effort at Ground Zero following the 9/11 attacks. Awarded to a son or daughter of a member of the firefighting community, with preference given to the children of fallen members of firefighting. This is an annual award valued at $2,000.
The Debra Lucas-McGady Faculty Scholarship
In memory of a beloved teacher, this award compiles donations among faculty and ‘friends of Debbie’. Award numbers, values, and timing are dependent upon the fund balance and discretion of the Administration in awarding multiple students or preserving funds for future periods.
Legacy Scholarship at Hudson Catholic
Scholarships created by alumni of now-defunct area catholic schools, they are established to honor and keep alive the memory of once-vibrant, proud schools. These are funded by people who value Catholic education, wherever it takes place. (More are expected to be added.)
· Marist Legacy Scholarship at Hudson Catholic
· St. Anthony Legacy Scholarship at Hudson Catholic
Medical Arts Scholarship
Awarded annually to a top performing rising junior and rising senior participating in the Medical Arts Program. Two awards each valued at $2,000.
Student Emergency Fund
Funds accumulated from periodic appeals are deployed to students whose families endure severe financial hardship that threatens continued attendance at Hudson Catholic by students who are academically and personally deserving of a Hudson Catholic education. The awarding of these funds is subject to a variety of factors, therefore, the number and value of individual awards will fluctuate. Award values might range from $500 to $5,000.
Lt. James Woods Scholarship
Initially funded by family and friends, this award honors the memory of a Jersey City firefighter who died in 2014 with 15 years of service to our city. Lt. Woods was awarded Fire Fighter of the Year for his efforts at Ground Zero on and after September 11, 2001. This is a yearly award valued at $1,000, with preference given to a child from a firefighter’s family.

The First
Lady Hawks
The enrollment of girls at Hudson Catholic is documented as freshmen in 2008 and upperclassmen in 2009, with those upperclassmen first graduating in 2010. Yet, the very first girls to receive educational instruction at Hudson Catholic technically dates back to 1966!
How that came to be starts with a fire at nearby PS11 on Bergen Avenue at Academy Street which occurred on October 3rd, 1966. Hudson Catholic lineages from that fire abound.
That school building was destroyed, its replacement reopened on April 2nd, 1969. In the interim, all displaced students with the exception of the kindergarteners found accommodations for schooling at School 17.
At the invitation of the late Brother Thomas Caldwell, Hudson Catholic's Principal in the day, the PS11 Kindergarten class immediately relocated, for the next two years, to 790 Bergen Avenue, where its boys and GIRLS graced the halls of Hudson Catholic from a classroom tucked away across from The Library. Teaching those classes were the late Phyllis Carfora (mother of George Carfora ’70 and Jeffrey ‘76) and Ann Gerhity.
Gail Kernan and Leni Chrisomalis were among that year’s PS11 kindergarteners, and they recall how Hudson Catholic was kind enough to bring in the kindergarten classes and give them a home for the year. Today, Gail and Leni are Kahles, having married Joseph ’76 and Francis ’79, respectively, each giving birth to Hawks sons, and each going on to become President of the Hudson Catholic Mothers Guild. But in their initial moment of entry into the Hudson Catholic family, Gail and Leni became members of the ‘somewhat first Lady Hawks’.
Editor's note: Frank Benincasa '69 was a 15 year-old Soph at the time, his 5 year-old brother Robert one of the relocated kindergartners, who threatened to tell Brother Thomas on his big brother while they attended Hudson Catholic together! Little Robbie went on to officially enroll in and graduate from Hudson Catholic ten yers after Frank, in the class of 1979!

Faculty member Melissa Chavez has taken the helm of The Hawk Shop and, having freshened it up and restocked the racks and shelves with newly minted and current Hawk designs, is ready for Hawk alumni to set their flight path to our physical showroom.
Caps, golf shirts, t-shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies, gym pants, running clothes, etc. Whatever the price, it is, as Brother Al used to say, “a mere”……$???. If you are coming by for a visit, do check out the sharp designs. Great for knocking around on a Saturday afternoon, or for sleep clothes, or just to show off to others at social gatherings. And a chance for you to brag about your school when people ask if you went to Hudson Catholic!

Student Food Drive Highlighted by the Return of the De LaSalle Cup
Faculty member Anna Schreiber is leading the charge to bring back competition for the De LaSalle Cup by publicizing the Hawk Food Drive in all homerooms and posting flyers throughout school.
Sponsored by the LaSallian Youth, the Food Drive began on Monday, November 1st and runs through Friday, November 19th, with acceptance of all types of non-perishable foods in cans, boxes, or bags.
Items are being collected during homeroom by LaSallian Youth members. At the end of the drive, the homeroom that has collected the most will be in the running for winning the LaSallian Cup, to be awarded at the end of the school year. The Cup award will encompass a total of all the drives the LaSallian Youth runs throughout the year.
Good Luck to all, and Happy Collecting!
