THIS IS WHY

Great-Horned Owl 09032023

On September 8, 2023, Pam and Wayne Whitacre released this beautiful owl back to the wild.

A big thank you to all our volunteers who had a hand in nursing this owl back to health so that he could be released!!!!

. . . another release!

3 Juvenile Kestrels released 10-1-23 at the Soarin' Hawk facility in Huntertown. Because these birds were nestlings when they came to us, they need not be released where they came from. Today, they were set free to find their own territories and get really good at doing kestrel-y things. Long life, little ones!

Ed. Note: This Spring, Soarin' Hawk took in over 20 baby kestrels, and all but one have now been released. We could not have done this without a super-dedicated staff of volunteers, who worked tirelessly to make sure they had everything they needed to grow.

If these releases are interesting or inspiring to you, please help us continue by making a donation. Raptors (even the baby ones!) are meat eaters, and the kind of meat they eat is expensive, as are the medical supplies we need to help them heal. Click the button below to help us help them. Thank you!

IT'S MIGRATION TIME!!!

Many species of birds have started their Fall migration; others will follow soon. Would you like to know what birds have begun their journey? There's an app for that. It's called BirdCast, and it will tell you how many and what species flew over your location. (Art by Charley Harper)

EDUCATION CORNER

FALL IS THE SEASON FOR... NEST BUILDING?!

The autumnal equinox has come and gone once again, and our days in the northern hemisphere continue to shorten. Fall colors and migration activity make it a wonderful time of the year to be outdoors in nature observing all the seasonal changes. It is also the season in which one of the most interesting phenomena in Nature is beginning: Bald Eagle nest building.

GOOD READS

Of Time and Turtles: Mending the World, Shell by Shattered Shell

by Sy Montgomery

This book just dropped within the past couple of weeks, and I thought you all might like to be aware of Sy's latest. I haven't read it yet but, as I've said before, any book by Sy Montgomery is a worthwhile read. This one is about ecological insights she acquired during the time she spent working at the Turtle Rescue League.

Highly Recommended (even though I haven't read it - YET!)

CELEBRATING GENEROSITY
