June 2021
Greetings!
There is a quote prominently displayed on a wall cling in the KIDS MATTER offices: "Be the change you wish to see in the world." It's a common quote we've all seen, but it so succinctly captures what I love most about working in the non-profit sector. The opportunity to spend my days surrounded by generous people who want to make a difference in the lives of others, brings immeasurable joy to my life! I hope you find joy in reading about a few of them in the stories below.

If any of their words inspire you, please consider giving the gift of your time to KIDS MATTER. We would love to connect you with a volunteer opportunity that allows you to be the change you wish to see in the world for the children and families we serve. If you are already generously supporting KIDS MATTER, thank you!

We Are Proud To Have Shannon As A CASA Volunteer
June is Pride Month, and we are proud to celebrate alongside our LGBTQ+ colleagues, volunteers and community friends. Diversity & Inclusion is, and always will be valued at KIDS MATTER—and promoting diverse voices and perspectives is key to serving all youth and families who need our help. We are grateful for CASA Volunteers like Shannon, who bring lived experiences and true empathy to the role.

“Struggling with mental health and acceptance is a recipe for self-destruction,” said Shannon, a former foster youth, who came out to a friend at the age of 13. “I am hoping to be that someone they can finally identify with. Similarities and understanding go a long way and I hope to be that someone who can make a difference.”

Like Shannon, many foster youth endure a revolving door of adults in their life, making it hard to talk about tough issues in the absence of trust. As a CASA Volunteer, Shannon hopes to provide a consistent presence and a safe space for teens to express their feelings.

“Back then, I trusted no one-- everyone had betrayed my trust. It would have been nice to have an adult outside of the systematic setting who was accepting of me at a time when I was feeling a lot of self-doubt,” she said. “There’s a stigma and feeling like you don’t fit in that puts you at risk. I hope to able to help them to not be so hard on themselves and to be more comfortable with the walk. I want to be able to cushion the struggle a little bit. I want them to know that they are not alone.”
If Shannon's story inspired you to learn more about becoming a CASA Volunteer, please reach out today! We are especially hoping to recruit more male volunteers and volunteers who identify as LGBTQ+. Contact us by email volunteer@kidsmatterinc.org or call 414-344-1220 to take steps to start the next training.
Helping Families Stay Together in Milwaukee
National Reunification Month shines a bright light on the people and efforts around the country that help families stay together. It is also a time to celebrate the moms and dads who have overcome obstacles to reunify with their kids after they are placed in the child welfare system.

The Milwaukee Healthy Infant Court program (HIC) is one of the innovative resources that is helping Milwaukee parents to welcome their children back home. The program is collaborative, bringing the shared voices of parents together with judicial leaders, legal professionals, mental health clinicians and early childhood experts. By working with this team of trained professionals, parents who are invested in overcoming personal challenges and learning to be successful parents. The outcomes are encouraging. Of the cases closed through the HIC program since it launched in 2016:

  • 57% have resulted in reunification with a parent
  • 37% have resulted in a finalized adoption
  • 3% have resulted in permanent guardianship

Congratulations to the CASA Class of 2021
They may not be crossing a stage in a cap and gown, but this group of dedicated child advocates deserves a robust round of applause! Please join us in congratulating the most recent class of CASA Volunteers for completing the CASA Training Program including 34 hours of classroom study, court observation time and independent study. Having been recently sworn in by a judge they are eager to elevate the voices of foster youth as Court Appointed Special Advocates.

You too can make a difference in the life of a child in foster care. For more information, email volunteer@kidsmatterinc.org or visit our website to Learn more.

Meet Law Interns Bailey and Grace
A partnership with Marquette Law School has been particularly beneficial during the pandemic. Law Interns have helped us to keep up with growing demand for services by assisting Staff Attorney Beth Lauck with the creation of resources for caregivers and youth in foster care and by supporting our virtual legal clinics. And while helping us to serve families more effectively and efficiently, they are also gaining practical experience that is helping them to make decisions about their future career plans.

Please join us in welcoming summer interns Bailey Holt and Grace Tressler.
Bailey
Bailey graduated from Marquette University in 2020 with a major in Social Welfare & Justice and a minor in Criminology & Law Studies. She will begin her final year of law school in the fall and graduate in May 2022.
