Message from President Bonnie Chapman
Greetings Soroptimists,
What did one sheep say to the other?
I love ewe!
What did the sheep respond?
You're not so baaaaaaa-d yourself!
Yup...it's Valentines Day this week. Happy Valentines to all of my favorite Soroptimist gals! There are a couple of important sign-ups to pay attention to this week. First, I hope many of you will be joining me at SUDS at my house for a fun movie night watching Hilarity for Charity. The evite for this was sent out last week. Looking forward to a great crowd and a lot of laughter.
Coming soon to your inbox will be a sign-up for our next Cabi pop-up shop for Camp Fire survivors. We will be helping the Butte County Cabi representatives at their pop-up shop in Durham. Set-up will be Friday, February 22 and the shop will be Saturday, February 23.
Everyone who works will get a t-shirt!
It's another great week to be a Soroptimist!
With Gratitude,
Soroptimist International of Chico
President, 2018-2019

Educational Minute by Rosie Potestio
Soroptimist Live Your Dream: Education and Training Awards for Women is designed to give women the resources they need to improve their education, skills and employment prospects.
Together with Dream It Be It, LYD is one of the two core projects of SI International.
Every year, Soroptimists distributes more than $2.1 million in educational grants to about 1,500 women all over the world. Over half of these recipients are survivors of domestic violence, trafficking or sexual assault. Nearly all of the women and families have overcome enormous obstacles including poverty, teen pregnancy and drug or alcohol addiction.
These cash awards are used to offset any costs associated with their efforts to attain higher education, such as books, childcare, tuition and transportation.
Here are the criteria: A woman who:
- Provides primary financial support for herself and a dependent
- Has financial need
- Is enrolled in a vocational/skills training program or an undergraduate degree program
- And is motivated to achieve her goals
Next week, on February 20, the SI Objectives Committee will be presenting SI Chico's Live Your Dream Awards program. We will be presenting cash awards totaling $3,500 to three amazing women. This is a great program to bring any of your friends who may be interested in our club. This is the fun part, where we get to give away the money we have worked so hard to raise.
We will see you next week at our Live Your Dream presentations!

February Member of the Month is Maureen Duquette
I was born in 1943, in England about 60 miles north-west of London. I had one brother, 10 years older than me. As a child, rationing was in place, and much of my country was severely damaged during the war. Recovery took a long time. My family eventually moved to Windsor. I went to a church run elementary school and later to Windsor Grammar School for Girls, an academically challenging school. I enjoyed reasonable academic success, sports and drama productions. I have good memories of my school life.
I Joined the British Army immediately after graduation, attending the Officer Cadet Training College for Women Officers. My branch of service was Womens Royal Army Corps, (WRAC). I served 11 years, retiring as a Captain. I lived in Germany and Malta on tours of duty, and visited many parts of the world during my various assignments.
I met Gary, my American husband in 1969 in Germany. We met up again in 1974 when I was vacationing in USA and married 3 weeks later! After obtaining legal status, I joined Wells Fargo's Management Training program and went on to enjoy a 27 year career as a bank officer, manager, retiring as Vice President.
We moved to Chico in 1981. Our only son, Matt is married to Heidi and has 2 young sons, they live in Chico. Sadly Gary died in 2008.
I am an Enloe Volunteer since 2005 and was a Soroptimist from 1994 until 2004, happily rejoining in Sep 2018.
