USA Hockey Declaration of Safety, Fair Play & Respect
Welcome to the 2019-20 hockey season. This past June, USA Hockey passed this declaration with the intent to address issues around body contact/checking. You may ask why such an article is in the ADM Snapshot since “checking” is not allowed until 14U for boys and not at all for girls/women? The declaration also covers body contact, which occurs at every level, as well as respect for the game which should be taught from the beginning. As members of USA Hockey it is important that you understand what your governing body is doing to help keep your child and the game safe as they progress through the age levels.
USA Hockey is committed to creating a safe and fair environment for all participants. Respect for the game, opponents, coaches, and officials is a critical part of that environment and it covers several different aspects of sportsmanship and fair play. This Declaration of Safety, Fair Play and Respect will guide a change in culture as to what is considered to be acceptable/unacceptable body checking and competitive contact at all levels of play.
The Declaration clarifies and updates existing rules/definitions to emphasize the key points to more clearly outline what is deemed acceptable and unacceptable behavior. Below is a video that shows examples of actions deemed "acceptable" and "unacceptable" to help illustrate expected behavior.

When Coaches Believe Everyone Can Develop
PCA National Advisory Board Member Carol Dweck is the Lewis and Virginia Eaton Professor of Psychology at Stanford University and author of Mindset: The New Psychology of Success. She graduated from Barnard College in 1967 and earned a Ph.D. from Yale University in 1972. She taught at Columbia University, Harvard University, and the University of Illinois before joining the Stanford faculty in 2004.
In this video, Dweck talks about what it means for a coach to have a growth mindset when interacting with their players. In sports, Dweck believes that a growth mindset is the idea that through hard work and teamwork, athletes can thrive and it becomes more about what is best for the team rather than who is more or less talented. Great teams are rooted in chemistry and trust, which creates a supportive team atmosphere."

Bridging the Divide Between Coaches & Officials
By Harry Thompson - The Hatfields and the McCoys. Cats and dogs. Hockey coaches and referees. Some things just don’t seem to go together. That doesn’t mean it has to stay that way. We can fix a lot of what ails us as a society and a sport if we could just be “better humans.” That was the message from a panel discussion aimed at addressing the often contentious relationship between bench bosses and the men and women in stripes during the second day of the inaugural USA Hockey Advanced Officiating Symposium.
