"Our Constitution is a remarkable, beautiful gift. But it's really just a piece of parchment. It has no power on its own. We, the people, give it power. We, the people, give it meaning - with our participation, and with the choices that we make and the alliances that we forge."
~Barack Obama
I woke up this morning to an Instagram post from yogi, Amy Ippoliti reiterating a reaction I had last night while watching President Obama's farewell address. During the portion of the speech included above, I thought, he's talking about yoga! My intention isn't for this to be a political post, so hear me (& Amy) out.
Amy post says, "
You are more powerful than you know! Yoga teaches us to become choice making experts and action oriented participants in the world! It's not about escape.... yoga brings you more fully into service and participation."
YES!
And, while I have no idea if he's ever stepped foot on a yoga mat or if he personally penned these words, I do believe that the quote rings true as a metaphor for what I understand the essence of yoga to be. It's not about "doing" the poses or even reading the ancient texts... those are just movements and more paper... until we give them meaning and power through our mindful and fully aware
thoughts, words, and actions.
Giving meaning to the power of yoga... on the mat and off. Namaste, Kristi
