Dear Ones,

This is in your inbox a day early in deference to Thanksgiving tomorrow. I hope that there is much you find to give thanks for.

Here is a bit of reflection on giving thanks from my all-time favorite theologian/writer, Frederick Buechner. I hope he speaks to your heart as he has mine.

"We must, each one of us, remember our own lives. Someone died whom we loved and needed, and from somewhere something came to fill our emptiness and mend us where we were broken. Was it only time that mended, only the resurging busyness of life that filled our emptiness? In anger we said something once that we could have bitten our tongues out for afterwards, or in anger somebody said something to us. But out of somewhere forgiveness came, a bridge was rebuilt; or maybe forgiveness never came, and to this day we have found no bridge back. Is the human heart the only source of its own healing? Is it the human conscience only that whispers to us that in bitterness and estrangement is death? We listen to the evening news with its usual recital of shabbiness and horror, and God, if we believe in him at all, seems remote and powerless, a child's dream.

But there are other times—often the most unexpected, unlikely times—when strong as life itself comes the sense that there is a holiness deeper than shabbiness and horror and at the very heart of darkness a light unutterable. Is it only the unpredictable fluctuations of the human spirit that we have to thank? We must each of us answer for ourselves, remember for ourselves, preach to ourselves our own sermons. But "Remember the wonderful works," sings King David, because if we remember deeply and truly, he says, we will know whom to thank, and in that room of thanksgiving and remembering there is peace."

Pero hay otras ocasiones, a menudo las más inesperadas e improbables, en las que surge con tanta fuerza como la vida misma la sensación de que existe una santidad más profunda que la miseria y el horror, y que en el corazón mismo de la oscuridad hay una luz indescriptible. ¿Es solo a las fluctuaciones impredecibles del espíritu humano a lo que debemos agradecerlo? Cada uno de nosotros debe responder por sí mismo, recordar por sí mismo, predicarse a sí mismo sus propios sermones. Pero «Recordad las obras maravillosas», canta el rey David, porque si recordamos profunda y verdaderamente, dice, sabremos a quién dar las gracias, y en esa sala de acción de gracias y recuerdo hay paz».

Reflexiones (Self-Reflection)

Mariño’s abstract paintings reflect on three periods of his artistic journey. Mariño is from Venezuela and has exhibited his work internationally. First, there are abstract expressionist pieces, characterized by the intensity of the brushstroke and vibrant colors. Then, there is work that evokes an urban environment, featuring layered elements and graffiti, and finally, a primitive line work that recalls childhood doodles. Mariño titles this series, “From Expressive Gesture to Garabatos (Scribbles)”

Gastelum is an award-winning emerging artist who earned a BFA from ASU in 2023. Layering oil, acrylic, and watercolor with textile elements, she creates highly textured surfaces that symbolically represent the weight of memory and values. “[My] artwork is a dedication to self-love and visual exploration of a person’s extraordinary soul.” Her work prompts self-reflection, showing the impact of family values and the importance of embracing one’s true self.

The Gallery is open for viewing from 10am - 2pm, Monday -Thursdays, Dec 1-25.

Las pinturas abstractas de Mariño reflejan tres períodos de su trayectoria artística. Mariño es venezolano y ha expuesto su obra a nivel internacional. En primer lugar, hay piezas expresionistas abstractas, caracterizadas por la intensidad de la pincelada y los colores vibrantes. Luego, hay obras que evocan un entorno urbano, con elementos superpuestos y grafitis, y, por último, un trabajo de líneas primitivas que recuerda los garabatos infantiles. Mariño titula esta serie «Del gesto expresivo a los garabatos».

Gastelum es una artista emergente galardonada que obtuvo una licenciatura en Bellas Artes por la Universidad Estatal de Arizona (ASU) en 2023. Mediante la superposición de capas de óleo, acrílico y acuarela con elementos textiles, crea superficies muy texturizadas que representan simbólicamente el peso de los recuerdos y los valores. «[Mi] obra es una dedicatoria al amor propio y a la exploración visual del alma extraordinaria de una persona». Prayers of the People

Oración de los Fieles

We pray for peace,

for goodwill among nations, and for the well-being of all people. We pray for our President and for the Congress, the Cabinet, and the Supreme Court. We pray for justice and peace, particularly in Gaza, Israel, and in Ukraine & Russia, in Sudan and in the Congo.

We ask your prayers for the poor,

the sick, the hungry, the oppressed, and those in prison, particularly those who are being removed from this country without due process and those being removed in spite of being in legal immigration processes. We pray for those who have lost federal service jobs, those who are losing federal loans for education due to reclassification of their intended professions, and all those who are out of work as they head into the holiday season.

We commend to your mercy all who have died, that your will for them may be fulfilled; and we pray that we may share with all your saints in your eternal kingdom.

We pray for: Jill, Glen, John, Scott, Kathy, and the de la Cruz family.

We give thanks for those celebrating birthdays and anniversaries this week.

Oremos para la paz,

por la buena voluntad de naciones, y para el bienestar de todos pueblos. Rezamos por nuestro Presidente y por el Congreso, el Gabinete y el Tribunal Supremo. Rezamos por la justicia y la paz, especialmente en Gaza, Iran, y Ucrania y Rusia, en Sudán y en el Congo.

Pedimos tus oraciones para los con recursos limitados,
