Giving Thanks: Stories of Gratitude and Strength

As the holiday season approaches, it’s a beautiful time to pause and reflect on the power of gratitude and the strength we find in each other. Our community is filled with incredible stories of resilience and moments of kindness that remind us why we’re here—to support, inspire, and uplift one another. Here are a few stories of gratitude and strength that I hope will bring a little extra warmth to your season.

Embracing the Unexpected: A Mother’s Journey of Love and Advocacy

When Janine met her husband Matt in her late thirties, she wasn’t sure if motherhood would be part of her story. Already a loving bonus mom to his two sons, Owen and Tyler, Janine’s dream of having a child of her own came true when they welcomed Mason. At 12 weeks into her pregnancy, Janine received the life-changing news that Mason had Down syndrome. While the initial diagnosis brought fear and uncertainty, she soon found strength in love and determination.

Mason’s early life was marked by significant health challenges, from a G-tube for nutrition to battling chronic respiratory illnesses and more recently, an autism diagnosis. Through it all, Janine has become an expert in navigating insurance, therapies, and medical equipment, all while meeting the needs of her neurotypical bonus kids. She shares, “This journey has never been easy, but it has always been worth it. I’ve learned to celebrate every inchstone and to see the beauty in the smallest moments.”

Janine’s story is one of resilience, patience, and gratitude for the community that has supported her along the way. Her journey reminds us that even in the most challenging circumstances, love and connection can transform lives and bring out the best in humanity.

Finding Gratitude and Community as a Special Needs Parent*

For Jill Flinton, November is a time to pause and reflect on gratitude. As a special needs parent, this isn’t always easy, but Jill has learned to focus on the positives: the joy her children bring, the flexibility of her schedule, a supportive “village” of friends and online connections, and small moments of self-care like a 15-minute walk to recharge.

Nearly 20 years ago, Jill started the first local online community for parents of children with disabilities. This inclusive group allowed parents to share resources, find common ground, and advocate for change together. Today, that spirit of connection thrives, helping kids succeed in ways once thought impossible.

“We’re no longer isolated,” Jill says. “We have a community to lean on, and that’s why we’re here—to support one another.” Her story reminds us of the power of gratitude and connection, even in the most challenging times.
