Giving Thanks Every Day
Did you know the week of November 10 was
Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week
? Founded in 1975 at Villanova University, this annual program brings people, organizations and companies together to raise awareness and provide relief to those struggling without a home or food to eat.
This campaign hits close to home for Fellowship Square residents – many of whom would struggle to have decent housing were it not for Fellowship Square. Additionally, because our residents have very limited income and resources, some of them have to choose between food, medications and paying other bills.
Fellowship Square offers numerous food programs to ensure that residents’ cupboards and refrigerators are stocked with the food they need, and we continuously make investments in our properties so that they are attractive and sufficiently maintained. Housing continues to be the most important program we offer.
As you know, it’s not just about the choices you make in life; it can also be circumstances beyond your control that shatter your dreams of self-sufficiency and life-long success.
There should be no blame, no judgment for those who need our help. Fellowship Square believes that every older adult deserves a place to live that is comfortable and safe, and also to live a life free from hunger. Through our efforts and those of community organizations, businesses and volunteers, we strive to ensure that
our residents do not face the food insecurity issues that plague so many of our nation's elderly.
We carry out this mission every day.
We are grateful for those of you who understand the challenges confronting today’s seniors.
Regardless of income, as we age, we will need help. In this month of giving thanks, Fellowship Square thanks you for your support of our work. Please continue to support us – and allow us to continue to support our seniors in need.
With gratitude,

Fellowship Square Pays Tribute to Our Vets
|
|
Fellowship Square Board Members
Jill Norcross
,
Dan Flavin
and
Tony Esse
all spent the afternoon on Veteran’s Day with some 50 residents at our
Lake Anne
community to pay tribute to our Vets (Dan and Tony being Vets themselves). A special reception was held in the lobby where residents, staff and Board Members gathered to hear stories from those who have served our country and honor their contributions. THANK YOU to all our veterans... including our board members who served!!!

Happy Thanksgiving!!
Fellowship Square is grateful for the support of
Kevin Barbera
and his force of 50 volunteers who prepared and served a delicious Thanksgiving meal to over 200 residents at
Hunters Woods Fellowship House
. Complete with turkey, stuffing, cornbread, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, green bean casseroles, warm rolls and delectable pies and desserts – the residents were treated to an extraordinary feast! The
Barbera Foundation
‘promotes positive change by inspiring others to engage in the community and help those less fortunate’… we are thrilled to have them as a partner and look forward to working with them again in the future. Thank you to all of the Barbera Foundation volunteers for an amazing holiday experience!

Website Tool Helps Low-Income Seniors Find Benefits
|
|
Since 2001, 7.2 million older adults have found nearly $27 billion in benefits through using
www.benefitscheckup.org
, a web-based tool sponsored by the
National Council on Aging
. While it began as a set of computer discs that helped low-income seniors in DC navigate the complex benefits world, it has grown to a powerful web-based tool used by advocates and consumers alike nationwide. The emphasis remains on helping seniors in need with handling expenses related to every day survival. For example, after completing an online survey, users can find out whether they qualify for help with their health care costs such as qualifying for patient assistance programs that pay Medicare premiums or the low-income subsidy program that helps pay for prescription drugs. In addition, the robust tool can identify 2,500 different programs that help people pay for food, taxes, jobs, energy assistance, as well as housing assistance. Users receive a report with advice on how to apply for the programs they may qualify for.
