Giving Tuesday Update from CVJHP

Thanking Our Invaluable Volunteers and Historian; Advancing Documentation, Restoration and Signage Efforts; Promoting Jewish Heritage Tourism

On this Giving Tuesday , CVJHP recognizes and thanks some of its selfless volunteers who provide invaluable help to CVJHP behind the scenes: Yisrael Meyerowitz , Librarian in the Israel and Hebraica Section of the Library of Congress; Moshe Cohen , Moroccan Jewish scholar and linguist; and Professor Isabel Ferreira Gould . Yisrael and Moshe discern and translate into English the 19th century Hebrew inscriptions on the headstones in Cabo Verde's Jewish cemeteries. Advisory Board member, Professor Isabel Ferreira Gould , an accomplished independent scholar and researcher at the University of Lisbon's Centre for Comparative Studies, has dedicated countless hours to reading and editing draft manuscripts of a forthcoming book by CVJHP Historian, Ângela Sofia Benoliel Coutinho.

Re-Dedication Ceremony in Santo Antao

CVJHP is excited to fly with Cabo Verde Airlines on its December 9, 2019 "Inaugural" direct flight from Washington, DC to Sal Island ! On this trip, President Carol Castiel will meet with local authorities to advance and expedite restoration, signage and maintenance efforts for the Jewish cemeteries and places of Jewish memory in the capital, Praia, and on the island of Boa Vista. She will also meet with CVJHP partners at the Institute of Cultural Patrimony to discuss plans for a symposium on the "Jews of Cabo Verde" slated for late May 2020 in Cabo Verde. Castiel looks forward to collaborating with the US Embassy in Praia, a valued supporter and benefactor, the GOCV and many descendants.

Cabo Verde's Moroccan Jewish patrimony will be highlighted at the 2nd Annual "Jewish Africa Conference" in March 2020 in Rabat, Morocco. The first JAC was held in New York at which CVJHP received the "Moses Leadership Award." JAC is co-sponsored by Association Mimouna and The American Sephardi Federation. In June 2019, H.E. Carlos Wahnon Veiga, Cabo Verde Ambassador to the US and Israel (below right), met with Elmehdi Boudra, President of Association Mimouna (below left) at the AJC's Global Forum.
