Karvonen, et al., published, “Distinctive Evasion Mechanisms to Allow Persistence of Borrelia burgdorferi in Different Human Cell Lines,” in Frontiers in Microbiology. The study aimed to better understand the mechanisms which enable Borrelia burgdorferi infections to progress into a persistent sequela of the disease by examining two non-immune and non-phagocytic human cell lines. James L. Occi, et al., recently published in the Journal of Medical Entomology regarding unusual findings of the three-host tick, Ixodes scapularis Say. Historically, this pervasive tick has been documented feeding on over 150 different species of terrestrial (land-dwelling) vertebrates including mammals, birds, and reptiles. Read more.

Sajid, et al., published in the journal Science Translational Medicine about the development of a promising mRNA vaccine, 19ISP, which has been found to induce tick resistance and prevent transmission of the Lyme disease-causing agent, Borrelia burgdorferi (Bb). Read more.

Heidi K. Goethert, et al., published, “Incrimination of shrews as a reservoir for Powassan virus,” in Communications Biology. The study examines Powassan virus lineage 2 (deer tick virus), and the growing threat the pathogen poses to American public health. Powassan virus is known to cause severe neurologic disease although its life cycle in nature is poorly understood.
The researchers used a host-specific real-time PCR to investigate if white-footed mice–the primary eastern U.S. reservoir of Lyme disease– are also the reservoir for deer tick virus. Read more.

In a recent article published by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), authors detected Borrelia miyamotoi in ticks from 19 states in the US. Investigators tested 39,198 ticks for B. miyamotoi that were submitted to the public tick testing program at the University of Massachusetts during May 2013–December 2019. All ticks tested were found on humans.
In Oregon and California, B. miyamotoi (a bacteria that can cause Lyme disease) was found in Ixodes pacificus ticks. Throughout the Northeastern and Midwestern US, it was detected in Ixodes scapularis ticks. No ticks carrying B. miyamotoi were detected south of Virginia. Read more.

On September 25, 2021, the Men’s Club of Four Seasons South Knolls, Jackson, NJ, held a Walkathon and Silent Auction benefit for the Lyme Disease Association’s (LDA) LymeAid 4 Kids program. Items were donated by local merchants and families for a silent auction as were the refreshments that were served to participants. Members of the Men’s Club and their families served the community and put together the program. Former LDA Board member and Club Family member Deb Scatuccio presented a Powerpoint talk on Lyme disease followed by a Q & A for the 200 attendees. Read more.
