This Giving Tuesday, as we approach the end of the year, your generosity plays an even more vital role in sustaining the Columbia River Gorge’s nonprofits and their programs than usual.
Nonprofits fill the gaps left by governments and the for-profit sector. They are created to meet the needs of communities, which are not directly tied to profit margins or politically beneficial. They serve missions, not bottom lines, and are frequently the voice and support systems for community members, causes, and environments which make our communities special and unique. Many local organizations are facing reduced federal and state funding, forcing them to stretch limited resources even further while community needs continue to grow.
The Burdoin and Rowena fires this summer were a stark reminder of how quickly our region can change and how essential it is to have strong, well-supported nonprofits ready to respond. From emergency relief and community coordination to long-term ecological restoration and resilience planning, these organizations are on the front lines of helping the Gorge recover and prepare for what comes next.
The recent government shutdown and changes to funding have left many organizations, including the regional food banks, with less resources. Upcoming changes to healthcare will put more of a strain on nonprofits in the health and human services sector. Environmental organizations have also felt the impact of recent changes with changes to AmeriCorps, the EPA, and government-funded research. All of this creates more need within our communities, and the nonprofit sector and foundations need your support to fill these widening gaps.
Upcoming shifts to state and federal tax structures will impact charitable deductions in 2026. For many donors, giving before December 31, may offer stronger tax advantages, especially for those considering larger gifts, establishing a donor-advised fund, or contributing to an existing fund at the Gorge Community Foundation.
Now is a powerful and potentially fiscally beneficial moment to make a difference. A year-end gift to GCF or to the nonprofit you care about most helps ensure the Gorge remains resilient, connected, and ready for the challenges and changes ahead. Change is the only constant, so long-term planning and consistent support are more essential than ever. Thank you for your kindness and generosity this Giving Tuesday, and remember to give where you live, love, and learn with GCF.
