Stepping Forward Groundbreaking and Matthews' Tribute
On a glorious day earlier this month, a small number of Anna Jaques Hospital (AJH) leaders, board members and elected officials gathered with members of the Byron J. Matthews family, for a socially-distanced, ceremonial groundbreaking for the Stepping Forward Project.

David LaFlamme, Chairman of the AJH Board of Trustees served as emcee of the event…“Key to the hospital’s long-term strategy is the expansion of primary and specialty care, specifically in orthopedics. This project adds two large operating rooms to house the latest technology and larger surgical teams, as well as renovates the hospital’s main entrance, naming it in honor of longtime AJH volunteers and community leaders, Helen and Byron J. Matthews.”

The highlight of the event included remarks and a video compilation of congratulatory messages about the Matthews family’s dedication to the community, and to AJH in particular.
With just a small gap to reach our $4M fundraising goal, the Foundation is reaching out broadly for donations large and small to help meet the target. You too, can join community members and local businesses who are Stepping Forward to help AJH in its final Campaign push. Your donation for an inscribed brick will help upgrade our surgical facilities and renovate the main entrance to enhance the patient and visitor experience. Your brick can honor a loved one, thank a caregiver, share an intention, or simply state your support with your name. Learn more or contact Mary Williamson to discuss how your contribution can help make a real difference to the future of AJH.
Great Chefs' Re-imagined

The Holter Heart Monitor is an ultra-small portable, battery-operated electrocardiogram that measures a patient’s heart activity as they perform normal everyday activities over a 24- to 48-hour.
Rotary Gift Improves Patient Care
AJH is grateful to The Rotary Club of Newburyport for a recent gift of $10,800 to purchase highly specialized equipment that will help our clinical staff make better decisions to benefit patient care. The gift purchased a pediatric scale for the Birth Center that will help staff adjust infant feeding needs and caloric intake based on their precise weight upon delivery and each day that inpatient care is required. Also purchased was a new portable Holter Heart Monitor system for our Cardiology department (described left).

A Father Remembered
Each year, in loving memory of their father, Richard Kaplan, and to celebrate the anniversary of his birth, his family donates a gift basket to be given to a new baby girl born in the AJH Birth Center on (or around) February 10th.

The son of AJH physician Louis Kaplan, Richard grew up on Beach Road in Salisbury, graduated from Newburyport High School in 1964 and worked as a social worker for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for over 27 years. All three of Mr. Kaplan’s daughters were born at AJH and enjoy this special annual connection to their dad and with their community hospital.
