A Note from Bob:
Year end is a time of giving. My own story involves maps and a now older friend who I haven't seen in nearly 50 years. Last week, a woman left a book for me that she thought I might enjoy. I was away from the shop and she didn't leave her name. The book is Nova Caesarea by John Delaney who was the curator of the Princeton University map collection. John and I shared a house our senior year in college. The beautiful book with over a hundred colorful illustrations of maps and prints reviews the development of the mapping of New Jersey from the earliest accounts in 1666 to 1888. I suspect that John may not know that I am a map dealer. I only learned of his career recently from our college newsletter. He is now retired to the West Coast and also a published poet. I must get in touch with him and renew our friendship. I look forward to reading his colorful and important work and thank the unknown friend for the wonderfully thoughtful gift during these awkward and trying times.

New Items for November 2020:
(in no particular order)
This map, originally published in 1914, was updated in this 1924 version with a sign saying "On to Wembley" and a lion where there previously were houses. This is the map that is credited with saving the London Underground at a time when it was struggling due to lack of passengers outside of commuting times. The map is filled with humorous illustrations and is sure to delight its lucky owner!
This delightful early map of New England features unusual land shapes and boundaries. It is a copy of Delaporte's 1780 map, but it leaves us wondering why these map makers were so wrong about the geography of this area after the Revolutionary War. They surely knew where Boston was... didn't they?
This handsome map of China includes many wonderful and intriguing details, such as the Great Wall along the northwest boundary, an imaginary lake with rivers that flow into India and Siam, and Korea as an island. The decorative cartouche and scale of miles dress the map up even more. This would be a perfect gift for any map enthusiast!
This map is a particular favorite here, but it usually sells so quickly that we can't enjoy it for too long! It was published just before the Cape Cod Canal was created and you can see the heavy traffic of ships that were forced to travel around the Cape. The canal would make the trip much shorter and faster. The history of the canal is quite interesting and we recommend looking it up for more fun Cape Cod trivia knowledge!
Avignon, Orange, Carpentras, and the Rhone can be found on this handsome Hondius map from c. 1627. North is oriented to the bottom of the map and the illustrated depictions of mountains, trees, cities, and towns give it character and charm.
Stieler's maps have excellent detail, delightful color, and they are reasonably priced for your gifting needs. We have added maps from the c. 1889 atlas and we will continue to add more.
This antique original 1934 tourist map of Cape Cod is the basis for one of our most popular reproductions. It features information about each town and some of the villages in Barnstable. This map can be hand colored by our local artist or enjoyed just as it is. Our reproductions are colored so you can get a good idea of what coloring would look like.
This map of Italy was made by Melchior Tavernier in 1637. It shows cities and towns, rivers, governmental boundaries within Italy, and more. At this time Corsica was part of Italy. The decorative script in the oceans is a handsome touch.
