May 2013 Newsletter from Washington Community YMCA & Wellman Parkside YMCA

Message from Becky Harkema, CEO

May is my most favorite month of the year. Probably because when I was a kid school was ending for the year, warm weather was present, I was able to play more outside and it was my twin brother's birthday. The other reason why I like May is for Memorial Day. This is a wonderful holiday to remember those individuals who have served our country and loved ones who have passed away. It also makes me think more about our YMCA and how we have been socially responsible. Over the past four weeks we have had three incredible stories that fit into our focus area of social responsibility. These stories are below:

I am so proud to announce that the YMCA received a $15,500 grant from the Washington County Riverboat Foundation on May 1, 2013. This grant will help cover the costs of a feasibility study. This study will interview 60 community leaders throughout Washington County about the need and giving potential for a Wellness Park in Washington, an activity center in Riverside and a new/remodeled YMCA facility in Washington. These interviews will be conducted this summer with the report being finalized in late August. This is an exciting time for Washington County as the YMCA begins to expand its services. We are so grateful to the Washington County Riverboat Foundation for kick-starting this exciting future!

On April 27, 2013 we held our Annual Campaign Gala Event at the Wellman YMCA. It was a wonderful event to wrap up our campaign where we had 230 people in attendance. The event raised $10,000 for the Wellman YMCA. We were also happy to announce that an anonymous donor purchased twelve spin bikes for the Wellman YMCA! Thank you very much! We are also at $50,000 raised in our Annual Campaign. This is just another example of what "giving back" does for a community and how donations can make such a difference in the lives of others.

The last story I would like to share comes from an email that was forwarded to me by our Wellman YMCA branch director, Angie Boyse. Below is this email:

Hi Angie,

My name is Carmen Fernau and I live in Wellman. My husband Joe and I are members of Wellman Parkside Y and we have definitely enjoyed our time there. We have only been members since we moved to Wellman in September but we have come to realize what a great facility we have in town and what value it brings to our lives and will bring to our children's lives in the future. We have attended family night with our children (2.5 year old and 7 month old) as well as taken advantage of the child watch program while we work out. Levi, our 2.5 year old, absolutely loves coming to the gym and playing! We make it a family thing to come to the Y and keeps us motivated to be more active and live a healthy lifestyle and can hopefully teach that to our kids. I am also apart of the running class with Teresa, which has been a huge challenge for me but has taught me a lot about myself. This class has brought me out of my comfort zone and pushed me more times than I can count and its hard and frustrating at the time but so worth it in the end. I'm not the best runner out there but I'm learning that I can do anything I put my mind to...it just may take me a little longer than others J I really appreciate Teresa and the time she puts into our class as well as the friendships I have made with the other runners.

I feel like the Y has given our family so much in the short time we have been members and I would like to give back in some way and would love to hear about any volunteer opportunities at the Y.

These three stories are wonderful. Giving back is truly a gift and the YMCA of Washington County Iowa is truly grateful.

Thank you for making the Y a part of your day.
