Dear Friend of Manna,
It's the month the United States celebrates Thanksgiving, and Manna is your local food bank.
It may seem cliché, but I cannot let this month go by without thanking you for being a part of Manna's mission to eliminate hunger.  Whether your donate food or funds to us, whether you volunteer at our satellites or as community educators, whether you refer clients to us or give us the privilege of sharing food with you, we at Manna Food Center are grateful for your place in our work.

When I tell the story of how Manna got its start almost 35 years ago, I often say "we were created by the community, for the community, and the community makes our work possible." People who cared for their neighbors conceived of a place any resident could turn for food in times of need. Over the years, many things have changed, but one core element is the same: we couldn't make progress in the fight against hunger without you.

Angie an Fred at the Manny Launch
I spoke with Fred recently, a senior who receives food at his apartment through our partnership with Housing Opportunities Commission.  He was checking out our new mobile kitchen and pop-up pantry, "Manny," and was somewhat confused because it didn't look the traditional Manna trucks he is used to.  I explained that Manny was going to offer classes to help educate folks like him how to prepare healthy meals with the food shared.  I pointed out the local businesses and foundations who sponsored the bus, and told him the story of how his fellow neighbors wanted Manna to be able to do more than simply give out food but also to educate and share skills.  Fred beamed at the thought of learning new recipes and expressed relief that he wouldn't be wasting food that he "sometimes didn't know what to do with." He expressed his gratitude to everyone involved.

As you sit down to enjoy Thanksgiving festivities this month, please know that Fred and some 32,182 neighbors like him are thankful to you all year long.

Happy holidays,   Jackie

Farewell Lindsey
Nutrition Educator Lindsey and her assistant "Miss B".
Greetings to our cherished volunteers & partners:

I'm grateful to have the opportunity to bid you farewell and thank you for all you have done, and continue to do, for our Montgomery County neighbors. My last day as Manna's Nutrition Education Program Manager will be Wednesday, November 22nd. Shortly after finishing Thanksgiving dinner, I head to California for a new adventure with my hubby, where I will serve as the Distribution Network Engagement Manager at Feeding San Diego. (This foodbank serves over 63,000 families each week!) I am immensely grateful for the opportunity to meet many of you in our warehouse, out in the community, and even in my grocery store tours over the years.

Your commitment inspires me to consider seeking ways I can give back in my new community. Nutrition Education is still thriving at Manna, especially in the form of Manny the Mobile Kitchen. I do hope you will consider reaching out to our newest teammate, Jaimie   Mulligan, about volunteering aboard our Mobile Kitchen and Pop-Up Pantry. If you would like to stay in touch, please connect with me on LinkedIn

With gratitude to every one of you,   ~ Lindsey
