As we wind down the last weeks of our golden anniversary year, we can’t help but get a little nostalgic. Our first land preservation project was a 260-acre property, donated by one of our founders, William B. Greene. It’s now part of the Greene Valley Forest Preserve near Woodridge in DuPage County, and thousands of families every year enjoy its scenic wildflower displays, oak woodlands, and more than 12 miles of hiking trails.
Since that first project five decades ago, we’ve been able to preserve more than 36,000 acres of open space throughout northeastern Illinois! Our mission has also expanded since that time from a focus on preserving land to a broadened commitment to protecting our region’s waterways, connecting people of all ages to the nature around them, promoting earth-friendly landscaping, and providing healthy organic food to our community.
Thanks to our supporters, we’ve had much to celebrate during our 50th anniversary year. But there is much left to do!
This GivingTuesday, one of our loyal members has pledged to match $5,000 in donations made in our Facebook fundraiser today! Your donation this GivingTuesday will send us into our next 50 years with hope and strength.
