Do you have questions about the road widening project on Route 19 that is currently underway? According to Jason Foster, Chief Engineer of the Project for the West Virginia Government, they are actively buying the right of way for the project. The State has demolished some structures but has not yet advertised for the construction of the project. Mr. Foster anticipates a late spring or summer advertisement of the project, and no significant closures or detours are anticipated at this time. Currently, there is no specific website for this project provided by the State. Once the state has advertised the project and assigned a local contact, that person will be available to the community. Until then, owners with questions or concerns may contact Mr. Foster directly at jason.c.foster@wv.gov and he will have the appropriate individuals provide details in response to your questions.
How to update your Email with the POA Office: If you would like to add an email (or a second email contact) to the POA email system, please email Sandy Looney at sandy.looney@gladesproingspoa.com. Sandy will need your property address, name, phone number, and email to add you to the system.
ACC reminders: if you are building a new home in the community or planning on making any exterior changes to your home this spring, remember to reach out to Sandy Looney at sandy.looney@gladesproingspoa.com with any questions you may have prior to any changes being made or work starting. You can obtain an application online for a permit at https://gladespringspoa.com/governing-information. If you are in Phase 1, you are subject to the Phase 1 ARB Board; please contact the resort for details. The GSVPOA ACC Committee meets once a month, on the first Thursday of each month. The deadline for all submissions is at noon on the Thursday prior to the scheduled meeting. All completed paperwork is needed for a submission to be included on the agenda. Please allow five business days for a response from the committee.
Tree Removal Reminders:
If you have trees to be removed, you will need to mark them with colored tape, then submit an application for tree removal to the POA office. Your tree removal application will be reviewed, and someone will be out to inspect your trees. Once your tree removal permit has been approved, you can move forward with the removal of the approved trees only. This process can take seven to fourteen days.
CCR Violations Reminder: house numbers are required by the GSVPOA Rules and Regulations: "Each house must display the street address (numbers) using four-inch numbers and colors contrasting with the background." "The numbers must be visible from the street and installed before final inspection." House numbers also help emergency services find your home when services are needed. Please take the time to double-check if your home has house numbers that meet the requirements.
Let’s talk about mailboxes, we have noticed that many of the mailboxes in the neighborhood could use some love and attention. The current Rules and Regulations say that “Residential mailboxes, paper boxes, posts, and numbers will be of a uniform type and design. All boxes will be black or brown in color, cannot exceed 11"W, 15"H, 24"D, and mounted on a single black, or brown post not less than 4" X 4" nor more than 6" X 6". Except for temporary seasonal decorations, no changes in the color or design of the box and support are permitted. It will be the property owner's responsibility to maintain the box, paper box, and post support in a condition acceptable to the postmaster of Shady Spring, West Virginia, and the letter carrier. Stand-alone paper boxes are not permitted.” This is just a gentle reminder to take a look at your mailbox and ensure it is up to the regulations.
All of us at Glade Springs wish you all of you a very happy and healthy New Year!!
Respectfully yours,
Linda Horensavitz, PCAM

Glade Springs Villager’s Drive On!
|
|
Five GSPOA members volunteer as DAV(Disabled American Veterans) drivers for the Beckley area VA. Members can drive on a weekly basis or as their schedule permits! Over three years ago Steve Wagaman responded to a request for drivers via the local newspaper. A year later he recruited Jan Allen and Jan reached out to Carlos Kinsey. This past March, two new drivers responded to a Next Door post and Kathy Zaferatos and Zoann Kochersperger joined the team!
The motivation to support our veterans and community varies. Steve a US marine veteran felt “it was a great way to support and honor his fellow veterans”. An added benefit to helping those in need and enjoying the many stories told, is the opportunity to venture out into our beautiful part of the country.
Zoann and Jan have provided support to the military in the past. Zoann as the spouse of a US Army Chaplain for 31 years and she has children who currently serve. For 12 year’s Jan supported the military on military installations around the world as a Military Family Life Counselor. Zoann feels it is a pleasure to support and personally thank our veterans for their service, Jan loves to engage, support and encourage those going through difficult times as well exploring the many towns in Southern WV.
Carlos stated “driving for the VA is pay back time” “I came to the US as a student and later become an immigrant citizen and the country has been extremely generous to me and my family”. It is with great joy and satisfaction to be able to help veterans in need, who have defended this democratic USA.
Kathy stated “I was retired and wanted to volunteer and support our veterans and driving them to and from their appointments is very rewarding and appreciated by the veterans.
If you would like to join “the team” please contact the Beckley VA Medical Center Voluntary Service Office at 304-255-2121 ext. #4162 or #4556 or visit www.DAV.org for information.

"I THINK IT'S SO GROOVY. . ."
|
|
If you are part of the Baby Boom Generation, you may recall these lyrics. They come from the song, "Reach Out Of The Darkness." It's about people who were initially suspicious of or disliked each other becoming friends because they took the time to talk and get to know one another. Empathy and understanding are the results. "I think it's so groovy now that people are finally getting together..." "Groovy" may no longer be the best word to describe people listening and talking to one another, but communication and an openness to the feelings and opinions of others are still worthy goals wherever we might be and with whomever, we may be interacting."

Glade Springs Village Property Owners,
We are now in our winter season, and the weather hasn’t cooperated for golfing conditions, but we have some that take advantage of the nicer days. We would like to remind everyone of the winter course rules and availability. The Stonehaven Starter House will be open 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m., depending on weather conditions. Please call (304) 763-3332, or (304) 207-2186, or you can email us at golfshop@gladespringspoa.com for information on Stonehaven during the cold weather months. We are in our frost delay season, and it is important to check conditions and/or opt-in to our text database for information. The bathrooms on the golf course are now closed for the winter season and have been winterized.
Reminder: The Woodhaven Golf Course is closed until April 1, 2023. If anyone would like to purchase items from the golf shop at Woodhaven, please email Matt Felder at Glade Spring Sports or Tyler Farley at Glade Spring Sports for availability during the winter season.
Our GSVPOA staff members attended an evening event at the Beckley Raleigh County Chamber of Commerce on December 7, 2022, at the Raleigh County Convention Center to promote our Stonehaven and Woodhaven golf courses and answered many questions about our POA, the event was attended by Linda Horensavitz (GM), Matt Felber, a PGA Professional, and Tyler Farley, Golf Operations Manager.
Players that are visiting Stonehaven will be required to park in the gravel parking area toward the #10 tee.
Directions to the parking lot:
Coming from the main gate, continue through the clock tower and make a left on Edward Drive. Follow Edward Drive and make a left on George Lane. As you approach the end of George Lane, turn left, and the parking area is straight ahead. Please call the pro shop at 304-763-3332, and we will pick you up and bring you and/or guests to the Stonehaven Starter House to check in for golf and collect appropriate fees.
We will be distributing the carts for the Stonehaven Golf Course and collecting fees through the Stonehaven Starter House. Do not use the GSR Hotel parking lot across from the Stonehaven 1st tee or the main Cobb parking areas. The GSVPOA golf staff will do their best to accommodate our POA members and all guests during this transition.
Please scan the available QR code at the Stonehaven starter house or Woodhaven pro shop. Please answer the questions on the first text so we can update your information and edit our text database. This system will be utilized for cart rules, exciting new information, and other direct messages to members.

The Glade Springs Men's Book Club meets at 6:30 pm on the third Thursday of each month. Our January, February, and March meetings will be virtual via zoom. This allows members who are "snowbirds" to join our discussions while they are away from their homes in Glade. It also allows those who remain in our community for the winter months to avoid inclement weather, should there be any.
Our meetings from April through November are supper meetings held in either the Cobb Room or the Stonehaven Room at the main Glade Springs Clubhouse. No books are assigned for the month of December and that meeting is simply a social time prior to the Christmas holiday.
We read one book each month that is chosen by the membership and the books are almost exclusively non-fiction. Members also take turns leading our monthly conversations. The current membership stands at 12 but we have had as many as 18 members. If you would like to "sit in" on one of our upcoming ZOOM meetings in order to see what the Men's Book Club is all about, please contact Gary Schroeder at grschroed@gmail.com and send me your contact information. I will see that you receive an invitation to join the ZOOM meeting.

Golf Course Superintendent Update
|
|
Dear GSVPOA Members,
Despite the fact that Old Man Winter has begun to appear, you do not need to store your sticks until spring. Here in southern West Virginia, the weather can fluctuate almost daily. At times, we can have temperature swings that can be as extreme as 20 or more degrees. You never know when you might catch that bluebird day.
We must be careful and balance the benefits of being able to play during the winter months against the issues that it can possibly create. Winter damage can happen quickly and has the potential to extend well into spring or even beyond. I have listed a few tips below that will help us start the spring season with the best possible playing conditions.
Traffic control is more important than ever... In our region, turfgrasses go dormant during the winter months and pretty much shut down all vertical growth. This means that divots and ball marks will heal slowly, and concentrated traffic will wear the grass down to almost nothing. To limit the wear and tear during winter play, please try to scatter with golf carts and not take repetitive paths. Another way to protect our course during the winter is to try to park on the cart path whenever possible, and don’t take carts within 20 yards of the putting surfaces. Please take note of the daily cart rule, as carts will be restricted to paths more frequently during the winter months. This happens because of soft conditions that are a result of frequent freezes and thaws. Lastly, please try to move around on the tee boxes. Finding fresh turf to tee your ball on will spread out the divots, assisting in a speedy recovery. This is especially important on par-3s.
A little moisture can lead to a lot of damage.
Rainfall, melting snow, or thawing soil will leave our golf courses soft and wet during winter. Cool temperatures and limited sunlight mean that the courses will dry much more slowly during the winter months than they would during the other seasons. Adding insult to injury, frozen soil will not drain well. If we don’t manage traffic carefully, footsteps and vehicle tires will leave wet playing surfaces rutted and bumpy. Also, sudden stops or a slip may also shear the grass away from its roots, causing damage that will be visible well into spring.
The fact is, the less sunlight we receive, paired with colder temperatures, limits how well we can recover from winter damage. Therefore, it’s important to always be mindful of course conditions and try to minimize the possibility of potential damage. Winter golf is a bonus so enjoy the weather and the opportunity to get outdoors. I look forward to seeing you on the course.

Beckley Veterans Administration Volunteer Services
|
|
Veterans Administration Volunteer Service (VAVS) is very active in the Beckley Veterans Administration. Beckley Administration VAVS is number one in WV in the D.C. and Baltimore areas for volunteer hours and donations given. This year, our VAVS raised $1,287,212.00 for Beckley veterans. Our local VAVS will deliver several hundred Thanksgiving and Christmas meals and four hundred Christmas stockings to shut-in veterans or veterans who are alone during the holidays.
A few of the other ways VAVS serves our local veterans are:
Working with Soldiers’ Angels based in San Antonio, Texas, and with the philosophy of "No Soldier Will Go Unloved,"
Our VAVS held a baby shower for female veterans who had a baby or will have a baby in 2022.
Some of the additional activities VAVS participates in are
- "Home of the Brave," a campaign to celebrate Veteran’s Week
- "Treats for Troops,", collecting donations of Girl Scout cookies to be sent to the troops,
- Blanket drives
- "Operation Warm Feet." Operation Warm Feet is a holiday mission geared towards helping to warm the homeless veterans in our community. As the weather starts to change, most homeless people are sometimes left without the basic necessities of life! As we know, it is imperative to help keep their feet dry.
- Four Glade ladies are involved with "Quilts of Valor," handmade quilts awarded to any veteran touched by war. Several Glade residents provide transportation to and from appointments for Beckley VA veterans.
Contributions, donations, or information can be directed to:
