July 2021
2021 Member - Member Tournament

The 2021 Member/Member tournament was held on June 12-13 with 56 members participating. Considering the storms around the event and the cart path only restriction, we were able to complete both rounds. It was a fun event for all. Special thanks to Tommy Woolwine for organizing the event!

Congratulations to the 1st Place Gross winners - Doug Amtsberg and Bob Butsch!

News From Lake Chatham
The Dam Socials are in full swing! They are typically held on the first Wednesday of each month during the summer in the parking lot at the Chatham Lake dam. Bring an appetizer and your favorite beverage! The turnout has been great as we reconnected with many old friends and met some new neighbors. Upcoming Socials are July 7 and August 4. Watch Nextdoor for any changes due to weather.

Matt Felber, Director of Golf
Greetings from the GSVPOA Golf Shop!

As we swing into a beautiful summer, we are looking forward to keeping players active on both of our courses. The pool and the fitness center have also been active venues at Woodhaven so come out and enjoy some sunshine or a workout. We are also getting things in order to open The Haven.

I also wanted to remind everyone to post their scores on the GHIN system - if anyone needs help let me know. We are continually trying to update our current GHIN roster for future events and handicapping purposes.

For those players that rent carts at Woodhaven or resort carts for Stonehaven, we will be asking that all players begin doubling up again. This will minimize extra cart traffic on our courses to maintain good playing conditions.

The new handicap flag policy has been approved by the POA Board of Directors, and with the help of the golf committee, we will be ordering flags and taking applications at the Woodhaven Golf Shop. If you are interested in applying, please contact the Golf Shop for the paperwork. Keep in mind, on certain days with wet course conditions there may still be some cart path only restrictions even with the approved flag.

As a reminder, Stonehaven is open Monday after 4:00pm, Woodhaven Tuesday after 4:00pm, to members in “good standing” with privately owned carts and the appropriate POA trail passes only. If you are going to take advantage of this, please call the Woodhaven Pro Shop, so we can put you on the tee sheet and collect the needed round breakdown data.

Happy Golfing!

GSVPOA Members,

As we approach the midpoint of 2021, we are seeing nature at its finest here in our beautiful state. As I drive through the community, I see people out working in their yards, walking, jogging, or riding bikes with their family and of course enjoying our beautiful golf courses.

As we get into the golf season you will notice that topdressing greens increases. Proven benefits of a sound topdressing program include a smoother putting surface, finer textured turf, reduced grain and enhanced thatch control. A sound topdressing program can be used to gradually, over time, modify a poor rootzone mixture and improve water infiltration.

We are on a program of topdressing very lightly every couple of weeks throughout the season and into the fall. Of course, we will still have our heavier topdressings after aerifications, but these light applications allow us to work sand into the greens without it being so heavy that you continue to see it day after day on the surface. The light topdressings also keep the maintenance staff from having to spend so much time attempting to brush the sand into the canopy which can result in bruising of the grass on the greens.
Topdressing is not something that you try once or twice and then abandon, it is an integral part of a continuous effort to make our greens better.

We are making an investment in your golf courses. The benefits that we see, from the smoothing of the surface to thatch control to creating better water absorption, make it a practice that is vital to quality greens.

Thank You,
Nathan Armstrong

Update on the Route 19
Construction (Z-Way)
In the spring of 2006 Governor Joe Manchin asked that a Beckley/Raleigh County Transportation Authority be established to work with the state to determine road construction priorities for Raleigh County. The Authority was incorporated and assisted the state in designing what is now called the Z-Way as the answer to the traffic backups and increasing number of accidents on US 19/WV 3 South of Beckley through Shady Spring.

The East Beckley Bypass from the intersection of US 19 and Industrial Drive to the connection with I 64 is part of the Z-Way and is complete and open to traffic. The next two sections of the Z-Way will be constructed in two separate projects. One project will be new construction that will extend the East Beckley Bypass to connect with US19/WV 3 at an intersection near the entrance to Old Crow Road. The second project will widen US 19/WV 3 to three lanes from Old Crow Road past the intersection in Shady Spring where WV 3 turns toward Hinton.

Both of these projects have been designed and will be put out to bid late fall this year (2021). Construction should start March or April 2022. The WVDOH will require segments of road construction to be phased in to limit overly lengthy traffic delays. There WILL be one way traffic during construction. We have attached with this article one section that shows the new road construction connecting with the widening of the current road (NEW ROAD CONSTRUCTION IN BLUE). Also attached is a map showing the road as it extends the East Beckley Bypass south with new construction.  When the road construction is completed Glade Springs residents will travel into Beckley without encountering a traffic light.

I have had numerous questions about building a four or five lane road instead of widening US 19/WV 3 to three lanes. For sixteen years the Transportation Authority met numerous times with the West Virginia Secretary of Highways and his staff.  We fought hard for a five-lane or four-lane road. The response we got was that three-lane highways with a continuous two-way left turn lane typically have lower crash rates and, more importantly, lower injury rates. There are also fewer motorists exceeding the speed limit on three lane roads.

The WVDOH did consider the concept of a five-lane road but the costs of right of ways and other impacts far outweighed the benefits. The right of way for five lanes would have required the taking of 30 to 35 additional residences and 25 to 30 businesses. We were also reminded that the WVDOH has permanent traffic counters at the intersection of US 19 and WV 3. These counters indicate a slight decline in vehicle volumes which translates to a 20-year growth factor of 0.986. Which means they see a decline in future traffic on this road rather than an increase.

Here-to-There - A Saturday Outing
If you are into locally grown vegetables, fruits, organic jams and jellies, WV honey and maple syrup, plants and medicinal herbs, fresh eggs, locally sourced lamb, beef and chicken, homemade pastries, breads and even handmade jewelry and woodcrafts, then try the FAYETTE COUNTY FARMER'S MARKET in Fayetteville, about 50 minutes from Glade.

The market is located at 100 N. Court Street just off Wiseman Av behind the
Courthouse. It is open each Saturday from 8:00am-12:30pm thru Oct. 30. It is also open Thursdays in Oak Hill, next to DHHR. Be sure to try Café 110 for lunch, 110 Main St.

After stocking up at the Market, you might be ready for a cool one. Just down the road from downtown Fayetteville (about 1-1/2 miles) is The Freefolk Brewery. A delightful, artsy atmosphere abounds here both in the indoor pub and large covered outdoor gathering area.

The brewery offers a wide variety of their own brew which can best be experienced by sharing some Flights. Although the food menu is limited, it is fresh and locally sourced. The pepperoni rolls, onion rings and homemade salsa are delicious. Wine, cocktails and non-alcoholic beverages are available. All ages are welcome and the outdoor area offers a variety of lawn-type games.

The brewery which features live music on weekends, is located at 1690 Court St. and open Wednesday-Thursday 4:00-9:00pm; Friday and Saturday 1:00-10:00pm and Sunday 1:00-8:00pm.

A NOTE ABOUT THE OWNERS: Jeff Edwards, from Raleigh County, and Jamie Lester, originally from Wyoming County, have been in business together for many years with VANDALIA BRONZE based in Morgantown, WV. VANDALIA BRONZE is a sculpture firm noted for its public artworks like the Jerry West Statue, the Don Knotts Statue, the Wall of Remembrance and more.

Additionally, Jamie designed the WV Quarter featuring the New River Gorge Bridge. (Be sure to look for some of the Bronze works throughout the Brewery).

How did these guys get into making Beer? That's another story...visit The FREEFOLK and ask Jeff or Jamie or the friendly staff just how that came about.
