June 2022
Message from our General Manager
Thank you to everyone who attended the special Member's Meeting on Monday May 23rd, 2022. The POA is currently working on the video of the meeting to be provided to the membership along with a summary of the meeting.

Also thanks to all the committee members for volunteering to serve the community in so many ways. And thank you to all of you who are participating in the Adopt a Hole program.

The Woodhaven pool is now open Wednesday through Monday. The Woodhaven Golf Course is closed on Tuesdays, so the building is not staffed at this time. For safety reasons, the pool will be closed on Tuesday.

I have had a lot of questions come into the office in my first month at Glade Springs about ACC violations and inspections. I thought this would be a good opportunity to talk about compliance with the ACC rules.

Inspections are performed by the management staff weekly and letters are sent to owners whose homes are found to have violations of the ACC Rules and Regulations. Owners who would like to review the ACC rules and violations can obtain a copy online at the POA website at www.glaedspringspoa.com, under the Governing Documents tab under About Glade Springs. The goal of the inspections is to help you, as the owner, come into compliance.

If you need more time to come into compliance because a vendor is taking longer than expected to assist you or the needed parts are on order, or if you are just looking for suggestions as to how to correct the violation, please contact the office in written form or by email (info@gladespringspoa.com) and explain the situation. We will do our best to work with you in a reasonable manner as long as you are working to cure the violation in a reasonable timeframe.

By following the ACC rules and regulations, you, as owners, are helping to maintain the overall appearance of the neighborhood. We are currently working to implement new technology at the office that will help us be more consistent and better track violations. We are also reviewing the current guidelines for possible updates.

I am looking forward to meeting and working with all of you.

Chatham Lake Beach

Sand was recently added to create a beach at the lake for our members to enjoy. Based on the number of folks who made use of the beach over the Memorial Day weekend, it is a hit!
Matt Felber, Director of Golf
Glade Springs Village Property Owners,

Golf events scheduled for this season are posted on the GSVPOA website. Mark your calendar!!

The GSVPOA Member/Member is scheduled for July 9-10, 2022 and the GSVPOA Club Championship is scheduled for August 13-14, 2022.

The new merchandise is still arriving, and I am excited to offer new items this year for our GSVPOA members and guests. Remember, if there is something that you want us to special order just let me know.

The GSVPOA golf staff is growing as well. Our returning seasonal staff is back and we continue to hire additional staff this season to accommodate our services at the Stonehaven golf course. We have also hired Tyler Farley as the Golf Operations Manager to assist in all aspects of the golf operations at Stonehaven and Woodhaven. He will be assisting with tournaments, golf shop operations and customer service.

We are in our normal golf season, just a reminder that Stonehaven is closed on Mondays and Woodhaven is closed on Tuesdays. We will also still have availability for MEMBERS ONLY access on private carts, with a 2022 trail pass, to use after 4:00pm on Monday at Stonehaven and after 4:00pm on Tuesday at Woodhaven. Please call or email golfshop@gladespringspoa.com for information on Stonehaven regarding holiday Monday’s openings.

Players who are visiting Stonehaven will be required to park in the gravel parking area toward #10 tee.

Directions to parking area:

Coming from the main gate continue through the clock tower and make a left on Edward Drive, follow Edward Drive and make a left on George Lane. As you approach the end of George Lane turn left and the parking area is straight ahead.

Please call the Golf Shop at 304-763-3332 and we will pick you up and bring you and/or guests to the Stonehaven Starter House to check in for golf and collect appropriate fees.

We will be distributing the carts for the Stonehaven Golf Course and collecting fees through the Stonehaven Starter House. Do not use the GSR Hotel parking lot across from the Stonehaven 1st tee or the main Cobb parking areas.

The GSVPOA golf staff will do our best to accommodate our POA members and all guests during this transition.

The 2022 Stonehaven and Woodhaven Trail Passes are available for purchase and pickup at the Stonehaven Starter House. There is a QR code available at the Stonehaven Starter House or Woodhaven Golf Shop.

POA Members:

We had a site visit from the USGA Agronomist on May 11th. This is the 3rd visit over the last 24 months. These visits are very helpful to ensure we are on the right path agronomically with our chemical inputs and our labor allocation. It's also a good time for me to hear what the expert is seeing and hearing in our region. A comprehensive report will be prepared and I will forward that to the Greens Committee.

One of the major items we discussed is the amount of thatch and organic material in the fairways and tees. This has been an issue since I have been here, and we have pulled cores from the fairways several times and will do so again this year. We also use a bayonet tine to help, and this was done at both courses already this year. The fairways and tees did not accumulate the amount of organic material overnight. It was from lack of proactive maintenance in the past. Consequently, it will not be corrected overnight, however we are seeing a lot of healthier turf, so progress is evident. Therefore, our fairways hold so much moisture and require us to be cart path only even when there has been no rain for several days. In fact, when our Agronomist was on site it had been five days since we had any rain, yet he could pull a plug, squeeze it and water would run out. This organic thatch acts like a sponge and pulls water from below. This has the added problem of root fracturing. You see this when our mowers pull a piece of turf up. The roots do not go down enough to hold our turf in place. We see this as a huge priority for us for several years.

We had some drainage work scheduled for this year like what was done last fall. However, there is a shortage of the 2” pipe and at this time we do not believe we will have any of this work done this year. We are calling suppliers to source the pipe we need. I will keep the Greens Committee up to date on this, but unfortunately, I am not expecting any of this work to be done in 2022.

The greens at both courses have been aerated, top dressed and have recovered nicely. We are mowing them at .135 right now and rolling 3 x’s per week. I will be lowering the height to .130 in June. Please remember green speed slows as the day goes on, especially at Stonehaven where we have a large population of poa annua (annual bluegrass). This grass grows much faster than our bent grass. Our USGA Agronomist told us at their U.S. Open courses they will often start the day at 12 to 12.5 only to end the day at 10.5 to 11. That is as much as 2 feet of speed due to daytime growth. Our goal is to keep reasonable speed that is consistent.

One additional take away that I want to pass along is our tee set up and tee space management. The tees on the golf courses, particularly par 3’s, should be wider. They are long and skinny, and it is preferred that they be wide and short. We have what we have so we reviewed, and I have instructed our assistants to make sure we get a left and right rotation on all tees. This may require tee spacing to be a little closer than our standard five paces, but it will help us get better quality of turf.

Bunker rakes are back out on the golf course. Those playing behind you would appreciate it greatly if you took the time to use them. Remember that it is always safest to enter the bunker from the lower areas and not try to walk up or down the steep faces. This helps keep the edges in place and makes routine bunker maintenance less labor-intensive. There is no rule as to where the bunker rake should be placed. My preference is for rakes to be left just inside the bunker. That makes the rake easier for you, the golfer, to find.

Thank you to those who helped fill the divots this spring! It made a huge difference! Ball marks and divots are beginning to become much more prevalent as the season progresses. As you play your rounds of golf, remember to repair not only your ball mark, but two others as well. It would be greatly appreciated if the hole sponsors, and others as well, would spend some time filling divots this week. Also, for those near a par 3, please replenish the divot boxes on the tees. This will help in keeping our greens in better condition day in and day out. The maintenance staff provides divot mix at the starter building, the half-way house, and all of the par-3 tees. Use that sand to fill any divots you or others may have made.

Some are unclear about what we mean when we say 90-degrees. We are providing this definition adapted from the rule as seen in a Golfweek article called "Golf Cart Etiquette" by Sharon Penn. as well as a graphic of what our 90-degree rule is.

The 90-Degree Rule: Under this rule, carts are allowed on the fairway, but they must maintain a 90-degree angle from the cart path. You must take the cart path to a spot that is even with your ball, make a right angle turn where it is safe, and drive straight toward the ball. Then, after hitting your ball, return safely straight back to the path before moving forward.

Some final initiatives over the next couple of months: bi-weekly topdressing which will help us to keep green speed up and will improve the health of the greens and the addition of more sand to the fairway bunkers.

As a maintenance staff, we look forward to a great 2022 golf season, and to seeing each of you out on the golf course.

Food and Beverage Amendment
The GSVPOA Board of Directors has heard from our Members and their guests that they want access to food and beverages while enjoying our amenities on our common properties. These include during and after golf play and while enjoying the swimming pool and tennis court at Woodhaven. To accomplish this the Covenants need to be amended by the members.

The amendment will allow GSVPOA the right to provide food and beverage services on the Common Property of Glade Springs Village, such as Stonehaven and Woodhaven. We believe that amending the covenants will enhance the enjoyment of our amenities for Members and guests; improve our property values; and make Glade Springs Village more attractive to potential buyers.

The Board respectfully asks you to sign the agreement to amend the Protective Covenant number 22 to accomplish the change. Please promptly sign, date and return it to us.

If you have any questions about this amendment, there is further information available on the GSVPOA website: gladespringspoa.com. Please click on Covenant 22 to read the introduction, Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ), and a sample agreement form.

Rotary Service Award
On June 16, 2022 the Rotary Club of Beckley will receive the Governor of West Virginia’s Service Award during a dinner and ceremony at the Culture Center on the Capitol grounds in Charleston.

The Club was chosen over several other group nominees with an award that recognizes the Club’s exemplary community service and volunteerism.
Coincidently, the Club is celebrating its centennial anniversary chartered in March 1922 highlighting 100 years of community service. Several Glade Springs Village POA residents are Club members and have significantly contributed their time and effort in community volunteer activities some of which are listed below:

  • Maintaining the Adopt a Highway of South Kanawha Street with litter sweeps.
  • Sponsoring the Dave Langford Food Drive providing money to local food pantries replenishing their pantries contributing $8,000 annually for this effort.
  • Adopting local elementary schools by providing school supplies, face coverings and Christmas presents to the most socio-economic challenged made possible by $15,000 annual membership donations to satisfy the needs of our youngest residents.
  • Providing snack boxes to local first responders during 9/11 Day of Remembrance sending food and other items to over thirty emergency, fire and law enforcement workers.
  • Participating in the Annual Salvation Army Kettle Campaign bringing in the most donations in a one-day effort.
  • Assisting in the development and maintenance of the Solid Waste Authority’s High Tunnels providing over a ton of fresh locally sourced food harvested for area seniors.
  • Supporting Covid 19 vaccine distribution by registering community residents for vaccination.
  • Providing Halloween costumes to low-income elementary school students.
  • Collecting bras and undergarments for the annual Mardi Bras for a Cause drive supporting the Women’s Resource Center.
  • Participating in the United Way (UW) of Southern WV’s Festival of Trees auction raising over $2,100.
  • Maintaining two Blessing Boxes providing nonperishable food, sanitary items and clothing in Beckley and Glen Daniel which lies in the rural western part of Raleigh County.
  • Establishing a Success Closet filled with sanitized, clean professional quality clothing for women and men who are poised for a promotion, a job, a loan or an important court date — and who need an outfit to represent who they are and where they are headed.

Notable recipients of the Club’s community service efforts are primarily: United Way of Southern WV, various Beckley food kitchens, designated low-income families, an unquantifiable number of homeless individuals, First Responders, and the Women’s Resource Center.

Membership continually responds favorably to periodic donation requests to fund various community service efforts. Service projects, in turn, have proven a powerful recruiting tool resonating with younger, civic minded Beckley residents desiring to improve their community.  Even previously inactive members who rejoined the Club mentioned that there is more energy and enthusiasm amongst membership. Consequently, the Club is one of the few within the District, comprising fifty-four clubs, with a growing, proactive membership.

Anyone interested in learning more about the Club’s activities or becoming a member, contact either Rick Macak, Gary Schroeder, Bill Baker or Cinda Kinsey all of whom are Communication Committee members as well as Rick Lay, President of the POA Board.
Women’s Golf
Our first scramble for 2022 season was held on Monday afternoon at Woodhaven. Eighteen women played a 9 hole scramble from the silver tees. The winning team scored a 31! The event was followed with a potluck supper at the Haven. There was lots of great food and fellowship.

We will continue to plan these golf outings on the last Monday of the month for June, July, and August. All are planned as a 9 hole event with a shot gun start at 4:00pm followed by sharing a meal.

The following ladies have volunteered to organize our future post-golf meals:

Monday, June 27: Lori Vargo
Monday, July 25: Linda Wagner
Monday, August 29: Nancy Wheeler

The Golf Shop will determine the format for each event but it will always be a team game with the groups assigned by the Golf Shop. Suggestions are always welcome.

Please share this with any Glade women who might be interested in joining the fun. The goal is to promote a fun casual golf experience while making new friends. Enjoying the beauty of our golf courses and nature is just an added bonus as is making an occasional long putt.

Delta Kappa Gamma XI Chapter
Glade Springs is known for building community and being a great place to live. Women educators, broadly defined, have an impact on our community, locally, nationally and internationally. Leading women educators are from a variety of fields, public, private, and corporate. One organization, open to women educators in our community, is Delta Kappa Gamma, XI chapter. Community service and budget priorities are directed to stimulating the professional and personal growth of members and encouraging participation in appropriate programs of community service and action.

Delta Kappa Gamma Society was started in Austin, Texas in May of 1929 with a group of 12 women, seeking a voice in a male dominated culture. Nine years after women won the right to vote, it was still frowned on for women to meet, except for church and social activities. Women were offered few leadership positions, promoted rarely, fired easily and paid less than male colleagues. Our founders, under assumed names, used Greek letters, similar to sororities, in order to hide their true purpose as a society. Their true purpose is to promote professional and personal growth of women educators and excellence in education.

XI Chapter has nearly 40 members and is seeking new members, active and retired to support our outreach in the local community. Check out DKG.org and xichapterwv.weebly.com to learn more about our society. If you have been a DKG member in another community, you are encouraged to transfer your membership to XI chapter. We will invite you to a future meeting and assist you in determining how your skills will benefit our local organization. Our dues are $60 per year. We have four business meetings and several social activities annually.

Contact Dr. Glenda Wait, (303-763-4577), Marcia Dunlap (304-763-3222) or Brenda Epling, our chapter president (304-578-3112). Ask about exciting opportunities for scholarship, community service, and genuine spiritual fellowship in DKG.

                    WESTWIND FARM VINEYARD & WINERY
180 W. Wind Dr., Max Meadows , VA
Recently spent a cloudy, chilly afternoon with friends at this charming winery. After a tasting of really nice white and red wines, we ordered a couple of bottles and settled in front of the stone fireplace with some tasty snacks.

It felt like home as the vintner and owner joined us and shared with us the history of this family-owned winery. He explained that the wine is never manufactured and created only in small batches, using age-old winemaking methods. Each lot is hand-tended from harvest to bottle, all work done by the family.

In addition to quality wines in a beautiful rural mountain setting, the winery features a great gift shop offering local art, gourmet snacks, wine accessories, unique household gifts and more. We definitely plan a return visit on a warm, sunny day, bringing a picnic basket, getting some delicious Westwind Farm wines and enjoying the outdoor seating.
The Winery is open Tuesday-Saturday 11:00am-6:00pm and Sunday 1:00pm-6:00pm.

It is easily accessible, about 9 minutes off I-81 (Exit 80 at Fort Chiswell)
onto Highway 52. Travel time from Glade Springs about 1-1/2hours.

The new 2022 Rate Schedule has been loaded to the Glade Springs Village Website under the Member's Only section. It can also be found here.
