Message from our General Manager

Dear Residents,

Our team has been busy this spring addressing drainage on the Woodhaven course. We rented a trencher and addressed the drainage on the Woodhaven course in the following areas:

  • Hole number one on the approach
  • Hole number three in the area of the green
  • Hole number four in the area of the cart path
  • We added a culvert at Woodhaven maintenance shop,
  • The team addressed several small drainage areas on the course.

We believe that it will not only improve your experience as you play the course but the overall health of the course as well. It is our hope that you are now starting to see a difference in the course from these changes and enjoying your golf more.

You will also notice that a few of the Woodhaven Course bathrooms have had an update, you will notice new floors have been installed, the trim has been replaced and painted.

The POA efforts to market the golf courses appears to be working. The first quarter outside play is up by almost fifty percent over the 2022 first quarter outside play. We are looking forward to a wonderful golf season!

If you have a question for the POA, or need to get in touch with the POA the best way to do is to reach out to the office at 304-763-5382 or to email the POA office. This will provide you with the most reliable information.

We have several private homes under construction in the neighborhood, these areas are private property. No trespassing is allowed in these areas for your own safety. These are active construction areas. Please ensure that your children of all ages are aware not to enter.

The ballots for the annual meeting have been mailed to all the owners, if you have not received yours, please contact the POA office.

The POA office will be closed on Monday, May 29, 2023, in observance of Memorial Day.

The Woodhaven Pool opens on Friday, May 26, 2023. The Woodhaven pool hours will be the same as last year, Wednesday to Monday, 11:00 am to 7:00 pm. The pool is closed on Tuesdays for cleaning, maintenance, and safety. We hope that everyone enjoys the commercial pool furniture this summer.

Respectfully yours,

West Virginia Strawberry Festival,
May,13-21, 2023
fresh_berries.jpg
The West Virginia Strawberry Festival kicked off in 1936 as a way to honor our strawberry growers and help them increase sales. The very first Festival was a day-long celebration. As the years passed and its popularity increased, the West Virginia Strawberry Festival grew into the full week of fun that we know it as today! We continue to honor strawberry growers from all over our beautiful state. The Strawberry Auction is traditionally held on the Friday afternoon of Festival Week.

Interesting Fact: After being discontinued for five years during WWII, the Festival continued to expand into today’s week-long celebration!

We pride our festival in being known as an “Exciting Family Tradition.” For 8 fun-filled days, guests of all ages will enjoy the Strawberry Gift Shop, Horse & Carriage Parade, the Arts & Craft Show at WV Wesleyan College, and food vendors specializing in strawberry treats of all kinds. Oh and don’t forget the carnival!

Please email us info@WVStrawberryFestival.com or call 304-472-9036 for more information. We hope you enjoy the festival!

Matt Felber, Director of Golf
Glade Springs Village Property Owners,

We continue to receive great-looking merchandise at the Woodhaven Pro shop for the 2023 season. Our new ladies' apparel is just now coming in, so come out and visit us. We have also added some new items that aren’t just for golfers, so everyone is welcome. The pro shop staff is available for special orders; if you don’t see exactly what you are looking for in your size, please ask. Glade Springs Village items make great gifts for other POA members!

The spring aerification on Woodhaven is May 2–5, 2023, and Stonehaven will be May 15–18, 2023.

Please remember that all carts should be on the cart paths around tees and greens on both courses. We have received several complaints and images of our POA members being too close to the green. Please do not drive on the opposite side of the green from where the path is located. This traffic will continue to wear areas in the rough around the greens. When you approach the green complex, please proceed to the path.

The 2023 GSVPOA Golf Calendar is now up on the website at www.gladespringspoa.com and will be updated and subject to change throughout the season. We have several returning events and will continue to add new ones during the season. We will do our best to not inconvenience our POA members when booking outside events.

Now that we have opened both golf courses, we will return to our in-season closed days. Stonehaven will be closed on Mondays, and Woodhaven will be closed on Tuesdays. For private cart owners with a 2023 trail pass, you can go out on Stonehaven on Monday after 4:00 p.m. and on Woodhaven on Tuesday after 4:00 p.m. As we get into our spring weather, we have a few items we would like to remind everyone to start the new season. For those players who would like the opportunity to tee off on holes near their homes (instead of the #1 tee), please be sure to call the pro shop for availability and to let us know you will be on the golf course. We need this information for various reasons, including scheduled golf maintenance, safety, and the collection of round data, to mention just a few. It is important not to jump in front of other POA members or guests when not checking in and starting at #1.

The morning text database has been well received, and we continue to add highlights to cart rules, hours of operation, and other important information in a quick morning text. If anyone is not receiving those messages, please stop by the Stonehaven Starter House and scan the QR code to add your number to the list. For anyone that has "opted out," we as staff are not able to add you back into the database from the software; you will have to scan the barcode again to start getting the morning messages.

We have our 2023 trail pass available for purchase. This year, the board has approved and moved forward with the combined trial fee pass for $600.00 plus tax. This will also include one GHIN number and additional numbers may be purchased for $34.00 plus tax. There will no longer be a separate Stonehaven and Woodhaven trail pass. The Golf Committee will be working on adding fun events throughout the summer on the Woodhaven golf course. For example, when a trail pass holder plays at Woodhaven, they have access to the fleet carts if needed. Previously, when we held mixed course events such as Member/Member or the GSVPOA Club Championship, the former Stonehaven trail pass-only holder would have to pay for their cart fee(s) on the Woodhaven course. This will be included for the 2023 season.

We have a couple of new options for the upcoming golf season. We will be offering discount passes for prepaid member cart fees and prepaid guest member green fees that include cart fees. We will have a punch card that will be sold that includes 10 fees prepaid and two free. This pass will only be valid for the 2023 season and will expire on 12/31/2023. The unused season will not roll over to the 2024 season. All passes can be purchased at the Woodhaven golf shop or the Stonehaven Starter House.

For those POA members that are interested in taking advantage of booking online, please email matt.felber@gladespringspoa.com or tyler.farley@gladespringspoa.com, and we will reset your online access and update your username and password. This will be a great opportunity, as we have recently installed our new software. The new system has many additional functions that will be integrated as we bring it online.

The bathrooms on each golf course will be opened as warmer weather permits. Players that are visiting Stonehaven will be required to park in the gravel parking area toward the #10 tee.

Directions to the parking area:
Coming from the main gate, continue through the clock tower and make a left on Edward Drive. Follow Edward Drive and make a left on George Lane. As you approach the end of George Lane, turn left, and the parking area is straight ahead. Please call the pro shop at 304-763-3332, and we will pick you up and bring you and/or your guests to the Stonehaven Starter House to check in for golf and collect appropriate fees.

We will be distributing the carts for the Stonehaven Golf Course and collecting fees through the Stonehaven Starter House. Do not use the GSR Hotel parking lot across from the Stonehaven 1st tee or the main Cobb parking areas. The GSVPOA golf staff will do its best to accommodate our POA members and all guests during this transition.

Please scan the available QR code at the Stonehaven Starter House or Woodhaven Pro Shop. Please answer the questions in the first text so we can update your information and edit our text database. This system will be utilized for cart rules, exciting new information, and other direct-to-member texts.

Please call or email us with any questions or concerns at golfshop@gladespringspoa.com or matt.felber@gladespringspoa.com.

Golf Course Superintendent Update
Dear GSVPOA Members,

As we inch closer to the dog days of summer, the necessary evil of spring aerification has arrived. For the majority of us, aerification is a dirty word. It conveys images of our precious greens punched with holes and buried in sand, making the putting surface at best inconsistent and, at worst, hardly playable at all. Most serious golfers understand that aerification is necessary to sustain healthy turf. However, most of us only know what we see—a beat-up green that makes it nearly impossible to make anything longer than the occasional 5–10 footer.

So why do we aerate, anyway? The number one reason to aerify is the removal of thatch. Over time, organic material builds up and creates an impermeable layer of thatch between the turf surface and the soil beneath, therefore restricting the transfer of water and oxygen to the root zone along with other vital nutrients needed for healthy turf. Thatch also makes for a soft, spongy playing surface that is far from desirable. Soft conditions welcome mechanical damage due to inconsistencies and shallow roots. Another benefit of aerification is that it relieves compaction that is created by our maintenance equipment, carts, and foot traffic. Last but definitely not least, core aeration creates channels, assisting with drainage, the release of harmful gases, and increased airflow. These channels allow roots to stretch deep, surpassing where they had stopped in the past. Deeper root systems allow us to lengthen irrigation intervals and minimize fertilization. This will provide a drier, healthier playing surface that will extend the longevity of the greens.

Now that we know why we aerate and have begrudgingly accepted the fact that aerification must be done, the controversial topic of timing still lingers. So, when should this happen, and why does it always seem to happen when the greens are beginning to roll? These questions can be tough and debatable. On one end, you must always protect your course and do what is right agronomically to ensure optimal conditions for years to come. On the other side is meeting the club’s membership and business demands. In the end, aerification is part of the cost of doing business, just as you must change the oil in your car. Delaying aeration may save money in the short term, but it puts the golf course at risk.

Thank you for your support,
Patrick Murphy

West Virginia Waterfall Trails
Chasing waterfalls takes on a whole new meaning this summer in West Virginia with the first-ever statewide Waterfall Trail. The trail was created for travelers looking to get off the beaten path, reconnect with nature and discover more than two dozen waterfalls for a chance to win exclusive prizes.

With over 200 waterfalls found across the state, the more than two dozen cascades featured along the trail are the perfect way to kick off a summer of waterfall hunting. The trail includes well-known falls such as Blackwater and Sandstone, but also features hidden gems like Finn’s in the New River Gorge National Park & Preserve and Drawdy in Boone County. Some, like Cathedral, tower above the valley floor, while others span wide rivers.

The West Virginia Waterfall Trail is the perfect summer activity. The best part: you can earn exclusive prizes along the way!

With more than 200 waterfalls in the Mountain State, each hike that leads you to one of these wonders of nature is incredible and will leave you speechless. From easy hikes to more difficult treks, the views these trails lead you to are spectacular and will never be forgotten.
