Hello GSVPOA Members,

Greetings from the GSVPOA Golf Shop! As fall approaches and the weather starts to cool off, our golf courses will award us with some fantastic conditions and great pictures of the leaves changing color.

Our 2021 Club Champions this year are Bumper Wright for the overall Men’s division and Mary Fulbright winning the overall Ladies! Congratulations!! Thank you to all our participants and flight winners as well.

The Just For Kids tournament on August 20, 2021 was a huge success and, despite being cart path only due to the amount of rainfall, the playing weather was perfect during the event. Special thanks to Rick and Stoya Lay along with their JFK Committee for all their hard work and planning for this annual event.

For those players that rent carts at Woodhaven or resort carts for Stonehaven, we will be asking that all players double up again. This will minimize extra cart traffic on our courses to maintain good playing conditions.

The last item I would like to discuss is pace of play. A reminder to everyone please allow faster players to play through. The best way to keep good pace is directly behind the group in front of you and not just directly in front of the group behind you…..

Our GSVPOA Golf Committee is working on a list of course rules that will be posted at Stonehaven and Woodhaven. These will include proper golf attire, pace of play, and other course rules.

As a reminder, Stonehaven is open Monday after 4:00pm, Woodhaven Tuesday after 4:00pm, to members in “good standing” with privately owned carts and the appropriate POA trail passes only.

If you would like to take advantage of this please call the Woodhaven Golf Shop so we can put you on the tee sheet and collect the needed round breakdown data.

Happy Golfing,
Matt Felber, PGA

GSVPOA Members:

We are happy to announce that as we head into fall we will start one of the projects we have been planning for some time. We will be improving the drainage on holes 3, 7, 9 and 16 of the Stonehaven Course. At the moment we are still finalizing the dates, but the work will be performed in late September through the beginning of October. The work will take 7-10 days to complete.

We will be closing only the hole that the contractor will be working on for the day while the remainder of the course will remain open for play. We will be leveraging Monday's when the course is normally closed to minimize the impact to our members and guests. We look forward to getting started on this project that will offer improvements tor our course.

After receiving bids from multiple companies, Matt Felber and I visited Guyan Country Club in Barboursville to see the completed work. The contractor has done work for Guyan over multiple years. Their crew is professional and did a great job of keeping the site neat and clean. The affected areas are playable almost immediately.

September has arrived and it seems like the weather is already starting to change. Schools have reopened, football season is here and a few of the trees are already starting to change. This is truly one of my favorite times of year. I find myself sitting outside thinking about how truly beautiful it is here in southern West Virginia.

Bocce Ball

Jeff Thompson is a resident of Glade Springs who has started gathering people to play one of his favorite games, Bocce Ball. He has recently started a Bocce Ball club and is organizing games with fellow members. It's a great opportunity to enjoy the game and meet your neighbors.

The game of Bocce Ball is normally played with two teams of equal size on a court or in a yard. The teams are given four balls that are then thrown at a marker ball, a “pallina”, to gain points. The points are determined by which teams has the closest ball to the pallina once all the balls have been thrown. Bocce Ball is normally ended once one team reaches sixteen points, but players can set whatever limit they would like.

The Bocce Ball club started as a group on Nextdoor created by Jeff and his son. The groups normally holds games on Saturdays in the afternoon, often in a park or in a member's yard. The Bocce Ball club is open for anyone no matter the age, experience, or ability to join. Those interested can contact the group or Jeff on the Nextdoor site.

OLD WORLD LIBATIONS

You don’t have to go to Europe to experience delightful wines and meads in
a mountain setting. As a matter of fact, you don’t even have to leave West Virginia.
Old World Libations (OWL) sets along the bank of Indian Creek in Greenville, WV. Described as a small farm winery , OWL started selling their wines in 2018 from their historic farm house. In March of this year, owners April and husband and vintner Scott Ernst, opened an amazing 3000 square foot tasting room with a 1500 square foot deck overlooking Indian Creek.
Upon entering the grounds, 1,825 grape vines appear on the left and nearly 225 heirloom varieties of apple, peach, pawpaw, cherry and elderberry trees line the right side of the drive. The Ernst’s plan to use all of it for making their wines and meads.
In addition to meads, estate grown red and white wines and fruit wines, OWL offers delicious charcuterie boards and dips. Visitors are also welcome to bring their own picnics to enjoy creekside. Be sure to treat yourself and experience the charm of this beautiful winery and the warm hospitality of the Ernst family and their staff.

The winery is open Friday 4:00-9:00pm and Saturday and Sunday 1:00-6:00pm It is located at 3493 Greenville Rd in Greenville, WV, an hour and fifteen minutes from Glade. Take Route 3 thru Hinton to Route 12 toward Forest Hill and then Route 122 to the Vineyard.

A Reminder to all Residents
Please do not feed the deer!

Feeding deer often makes them more vulnerable to starvation, predation, disease, and vehicle collisions, among other things.

Adult deer lose up to 20 percent of their body weight during winter, regardless of the amount or quality of food present.

Adult deer get as much as 40 percent of their daily energy during winter from their fat tissue.

During winter, cover – not forage – becomes the key to survival. Deer seek softwood cover (deer yards) to avoid deep snow, high winds and extreme cold. Deer move little in these areas and use a network of trails collectively created. Travel is easier, as is escape from predators. Wintering deer tend to disperse over an area large enough to reduce competition for food and risk of predation.

Feed sites congregate deer into unnaturally high densities. These high deer densities can:
  • attract predators and increase risk of death by coyotes or domestic dogs.
  • spread disease among deer.
  • cause aggression, wasting vital energy reserves and leading to injury or death.
  • reduce fat reserves as deer use energy traveling to and from the feed site.
  • result in over-browsing of local vegetation and ornamental plants.
  • deny access to food, because subordinate deer are kept away from feeding stations, and over-browsing by larger deer removes food available to fawns.
  • increase deer-vehicle collisions. Vehicle-killed deer near feed sites can outnumber those that would naturally succumb to winter mortality.
