September 2023
Message from our General Manager
Dear Residents:

Thank you to the community members who participated in the charity event this month. The Just for Kids event was an amazing show of generosity from many of our members.

The POA office has had multiple reports of drones being witnessed flying near second-floor windows and over properties that are not owned by the person using the drone. This is a reminder to please be courteous and mindful of your neighbors. Please keep drones over your own property and away from any property that you do not own. Parents, we would ask you to please remind your children to be thoughtful of their neighbors.

The Dam and Safety Committee has received several complaints about pet waste being left behind at the beach area. Pet parents, please clean up after your pets. As a reminder, there is no parking on the sand area at the beach.

After much consideration and with the recommendation of the Golf Committee, the Glade Springs Board of Directors has approved a Golf Course Enforcement Policy, allowing for a means for the enforcement of the Golf Course Rules and Regulations. The purpose of the policy is to provide a mechanism for the POA to enforce the golf course rules. This will help to create a more pleasant golf experience for the patrons. A copy of the new policy can be found on the POA website. GSVPOA Golf Course Enforcement Policy

Respectfully yours,

Linda Horensavitz, PCAM
General Manager

Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad
toy-train3.jpg
Fall train ride adventures await you in Rome, West Virginia! Your excursion begins at Wappocomo Station, situated next to a charming homestead and amidst grand mountain landscapes. Enjoy the sounds of vintage diesel as they lead you through beautiful pastures and farms dating back to the 1700s.

As you journey along the South Branch of the Potomac River, you’ll enter a visually striking gorge known as the Trough. One of the most scenic spots along the South Branch, the Trough is home to American bald eagles.

Matt Felber, Director of Golf
Glade Springs Village Property Owners,

The time of year has come as the season starts to wind down for the 2023 season. We are working on our fall aerification at Stonehaven and Woodhaven to keep our courses in good shape throughout the season. We have enjoyed the start of some cooler temperatures as we head into fall. The golf season has been busy, and the players have been commenting positively on the conditions of our POA courses. Our Proshop has also received some nice layering apparel for those cool temperatures that are right around the corner. I would like to thank the Golf Committee for their help throughout the season in planning the events and also the golf staff for working hard to make sure the events and day-to-day operations run efficiently. The cold weather is on its way, so come out and enjoy our POA courses before the snow flies!

All private carts using a trail pass must have their 2023 trail pass displayed on the cart they are using when playing Stonehaven or Woodhaven.

The online tee time system is working, and members have the ability to book online again. Please follow these directions and if you have any questions, please email Matt Felber
Go to the website (gladespringspoa.com) and click on the member tee times at the top.

  • Click on login/sign-up
  • Fill out the right-hand side information under "sign-up"
  • Save the information and then log out and then log back in and it will take you into the member side. If you have any questions let me know.

Important information: the username must be the email currently on file.

Please remember that all carts should be on the cart paths around tees and greens on both courses. We are still receiving complaints and images of our POA members and guests being too close to the green. Please do not drive on the opposite side of the green from where the path is located. This traffic will continue to wear areas in the rough around the greens. When you approach the green complex, please proceed to the path.

We are still offering discount passes for prepaid member cart fees and prepaid guest member green fees that include cart fees. We will have a punch card that will be sold that includes 10 fees prepaid and two free. This pass will only be valid for the 2023 season and will expire on 12/31/2023. The unused season will not roll over to the 2024 season. All passes can be purchased at the Woodhaven golf shop or the Stonehaven Starter House. During inclement weather, please call ahead for availability.

For those POA members that are interested in taking advantage of booking online please email Matt Felber or Tyler Farley and we will reset your online access and update your username and password. This will be a great opportunity as we have recently installed our new software. The new system has many additional functions that will be integrated as we bring it online.

Players that are visiting Stonehaven will be required to park in the gravel parking area toward #10 tee.
Directions to parking area:
Coming from the main gate continue through the clock tower and make a left on Edward Drive, follow Edward Drive and make a left on George Lane. As you approach the end of George Lane turn left and the parking area is straight ahead. Please call the proshop at 304-763-3332 and we will pick you up and bring you and/or guests to the Stonehaven Starter House to check in for golf and collect appropriate fees.

We will be distributing the carts for the Stonehaven Golf Course and collecting fees through the Stonehaven Starter House. Do not use the GSR Hotel parking lot across from the Stonehaven 1st tee or the main Cobb parking areas. The GSVPOA golf staff will do our best to accommodate our POA members and all guests during this transition.

Please scan the available QR code at the Stonehaven Starter House or Woodhaven proshop. Please answer the questions in the first text so we can update your information and edit our text database. This system will be utilized for cart rules, exciting new information, and other direct to member texts.

Please call the golf shop at 304-763-3332 or email us with any questions or concerns at Golf Shop or Matt Felber's Email

Golf Course Superintendent Update
Dear GSVPOA Members,

Fall is in the air... The days are shorter, and the nights are becoming longer. The hot days of summer have moderated, and the golf season is starting to wind down. This is not the case for our turf care team. Autumn is the ideal time to restore the vigor of turfgrass and make preparations for the upcoming spring growing season.

Turf Care's management practices during the autumn months will have significant positive effects on the quality of turf for the next season. We begin these management practices in late September, and our goal is turfgrass 101. Fall is the time to improve root density and rebound growth to maintain good health going into the winter months. These listed practices are vital factors in a successful season.

  1. Food/Fertilization: Cool-season grasses require fertilization in the fall to recover from summer wear and stress. Improving root density and depth provides good health going into winter. We will fertilize aggressively with granular after aerification (approx..5 lb of nitrogen per 1000 sq ft) on all bentgrass (greens, tees, and fairways) and continue foliar and quick-release applications with ammonium sulfate late into the fall. At this time of the year, there will be minimal top growth, and the majority of the nitrogen will be utilized to produce strong, healthy roots and store carbohydrates. We will gradually back off nitrogen and increase potassium to deter winter injuries.
  2. Managing Poa Annua (Annual Bluegrass):Poa begins to recover in the fall, and the last thing we want to do is aid its recovery and cause an undesirable flush of growth from our bentgrass. Poa is prolific with seedhead production and will outcompete bentgrass in late fall and early spring. Pre-emergent and herbicides will be applied for chemical control.
  3. Reduction of liquid levels: to minimize liquid levels, we will basically shut down all overhead irrigation and spot water minimally as needed.
  4. Increase HOC (height of cut) and frequency of grinding reel mowers. A sharp, clean cut is essential for recovery and will promote photosynthesis. This helps bentgrass produce and store energy instead of repairing the damage caused by mowing at tight levels. We will roll the greens more frequently to assist with smoothness and speed.
  5. Verticut and topdressing: Light topdressing with sand will be applied frequently to protect the crown and help us come out of winter with optimal playing conditions.
  6. Pre-Emergent and Snow Mold: A late application of herbicide will be applied to combat crabgrass and other nuisance weeds. The final chemical application will be snow mold to protect us throughout the winter months.

Timing is everything, and weather is the ultimate factor in determining fall management practices. It is always better to wait or skip an application until favorable weather conditions exist. We constantly monitor the weather and call plenty of audibles. The ultimate goal is to have everything completed by the first snowfall. As we all know, it is very possible to have heavy snow well before Thanksgiving.

Thank you,

Patrick Murphy,

A Reminder to all Residents
Please do not feed the deer! Feeding deer often makes them more vulnerable to starvation, predation, disease, and vehicle collisions, among other things. Adult deer lose up to 20 percent of their body weight during winter, regardless of the amount or quality of food present. Adult deer get as much as 40 percent of their daily energy during winter from their fat tissue. During winter, cover – not forage – becomes the key to survival. Deer tend to look for softwood cover (deer yards) to avoid deep snow, high winds, and extreme cold. Deer move little in these areas and use a network of trails collectively created. Travel is easier, as an escape from predators.

Wintering deer tend to disperse over an area large enough to reduce competition for food and the risk of predation. Feed sites congregate deer into unnaturally high densities. These high deer densities can:
  • Attract predators and increase the risk of death by coyotes or domestic dogs. spread disease among deer.
  • Cause aggression, wasting vital energy reserves, and leading to injury or death.
  • Reduce fat reserves as deer use energy traveling to and from the feed site. result in the over-browsing of local vegetation and ornamental plants.
  • Deny access to food, because subordinate deer are kept away from feeding stations, and over-browsing by larger deer removes food available to fawns.
  • Increase deer-vehicle collisions. Vehicle-killed deer near feed sites can outnumber those that would naturally succumb to winter mortality.
Club Championship
On the weekend of August 12 and 13, the Glade Springs Village Property Owners Association hosted the Annual POA Golf Club Championship. The championship was played at Stonehaven on Saturday, August 12th, and at Woodhaven on Sunday, August 13th. The golf professional staff, with the help of the golf committee, organized the event.

There were several sponsors for the event, including Little General Stores, Olive Garden Italian Kitchen, The Dish Café, Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen, Tudor’s Biscuit World, Padrinos, Domino’s Pizza, Casablanca Italian Restaurant, Stroll Magazine, and El Mariachi Mexican Restaurant.

There were four flights based on the tees used. The Blue Tee Flight Gross was won by Ben Hiener, and the Blue Tee Flight Net was won by Jimmy Jones. The White Tee Flight Gross was won by Keith Crook, and the White Tee Net was won by William "Hoppy" Horne. The Gold Tee Flight Gross was won by Ed McCall, and the Gold Tee Flight Net was won by Tracy Webber. The Red Tee Flight Gross was won by Claytina Shepherd, and the Red Tee Flight Net was won by Linda Stroud. For the skill shots, Long Drive for Men was won by Tom Cushman, and Long Drive for Ladies was won by Karen Rainey. The men’s pin shot was won by Hoppy Horne, and the ladies pin shot was won by Janie Webber.

The weather cooperated for the entire weekend. There was no rain, and both courses were in great condition!

The Club Championship for Men was awarded to Ed McCall, and the Club Championship for Ladies was awarded to Claytina Shepherd. We must comment on Ed McCall’s play on Sunday at Woodhaven. He shot 31 on the front nine on his way to a 67 for the day.

The Golf Committee is always looking for new members. If you are interested in joining the Golf Committee, contact our General Manager, Linda Horensavitz, at 304-763-5382 or linda.horensavitz@gladespringspoa.com.
