Genius in the Glades:
Oil Paintings by Donald Neal

The Lawrence E. Will Museum of the Glades is proud to host an exhibition of oil paintings by iconic Glades artist Donald Neal. Celebrated for his mastery of the Trompe l' oeil ("fool the eye") method of oil painting, Neal blends technical mastery with native genius for conveying the substance of the Glades experience. Neal's compositions are elegant in their execution and they present an impressive range of themes from meditations on class conflict, race, and poverty, to humanity's tenuous relationship with nature in the watery world of the northern Everglades.

Monuments, Ontologies, and Translations:
Belle Glade Monumentality in the Okeechobee Basin"
By Archaeologist Nathan Lawres

The Palm Beach County Archaelogical Society invites you to attend "Monuments, Ontologies, and Translations: Belle Glade Monumentality in the Okeechobee Basin" by Archaeologist Nathan Lawres. This talk focuses on a relatively neglected aspect of this: how an ontology can be materialized as monumental architecture. In order to discuss this, we will present the monuments of the Belle Glade archaeological culture, located within the Kissimmee-Okeechobee-Everglades watershed, as a case study. Evidence from this region points to the presence of a relational ontology, in which the world is created and maintained through numerous and ongoing relationships. We argue that this understanding of reality is encapsulated within the Belle Glade monumental architecture and the architecture itself invokes references to relations with water, the cosmos, seasonality, people, and places throughout the landscape.
