They say investment analyst, we say Wall Street Nerd. Since its earnings season we thought we’d break down exactly how the Nerds fit into the whole mix.

If you want to be basic about it, an investment analyst is a professional who evaluates financial and investment information in order to make a recommendation on whether an investment should be bought, sold, or held.

Please don’t confuse a financial analyst with a financial advisor, or even an investment advisor (we’ll be Glamsplaining these in other installments) and certainly not your cousin who sells insurance out of the trunk of his car. Most financial analysts have the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation, which is one of the most challenging certifications to obtain and certainly the most prestigious. It basically takes three years to complete and that’s only if you pass each of the three levels the first time. Level one had a 47% pass rate last year. Other financial professionals and entities use research conducted by analysts in their respective roles.

Have a great weekend Savvies!
