Glass Club New Firing Process
One of the purposes listed in the PebbleCreek Glass Arts Club by-laws is to promote an interest in and share ideas and techniques in glass arts. The Board feels one of the main goals of the Club is to help members develop their skill level. One of the most important ways to enhance your glass working skills and take them to the next level is to have an understanding of how glass reacts to different programs. It is important to learn to choose the correct program for your project and understand how accurately setting temperatures will affect the end result. The best way to learn is to familiarize yourself with various firing schedules to achieve the desired result and actually programming the kiln.
Beginning on August 31, kiln firing slips will no longer be available and you will no longer be able to put projects on the shelf in the back of the room to wait to be fired. The only pieces that can be left on the shelf are ones that you have arranged with another member to put in the kiln with their pieces the next day. Members will combine their pieces with other members’ pieces to fill a kiln or totally fill a kiln themselves. You will need to sign-up for a kiln in advance.
In order to assist members who are uncomfortable or inexperienced with programming the kilns, Kitty Kowalczyk will be holding a Kiln 101 class on Sept 4 and Sept 23 both sessions will be at 10am, you only need to attend one session. There will be more sessions in October.
We will also be scheduling a class on understanding the glass firing process and what happens during each stage of the firing schedule. Stay tuned.
We know there will be a transition period until all members feel comfortable with this new process but be sure it will be a positive move for everyone to advance their skill level as they gain understanding of how glass fires.
