Surprise!
There is a new mural at Glen Echo Park! The Bumper Car Pavilion now has an original J. Jordan Bruns mural donning it's facade. After a solid week of painting, and countless revisions, it is completed. I am glad to be on solid, level ground again.
Thanks goes to the Glen Echo Park Partnership for the commission. This building was the site for the nonprofit event I spearheaded called "An Evening with the Arts, a Benefit for the Childrens Inn at NIH." In it, five artists painted a live concert and ending with us auctioning off those paintings. We raised nearly $45,000 over three years.
Also, please join me for the opening reception of Tadaima, my solo show at Artists and Makers Studios. The reception is this Saturday, May 7, from 11:00 - 3:00pm. The following week on Sunday, May 15 from 1:00 - 3:00pm, I am hosting a discussion of the ink wash technique featured in the show. More info below!
Lastly, Summer Art Clinics are filling up fast! I've included our summer offerings in this newsletter. I hope you can join our amazing artist community!

Tadaima
At Artists & Makers Studios 1 11810 Parklawn Dr Ste 210, Rockville, MD 20852
Opening Reception:
Saturday, May 7 from 11:00 - 3:00pm
Artist Discussion:
“Working in Ink Abroad”
Sunday May 15, 1:00 -3:00pm
Tadaima is a phrase that means “I’ve just come home now” in Japanese. J. Jordan Bruns, a long time Glen Echo Park resident artist has returned from a three-year sabbatical in Tokyo, Japan.
“Tadaima” will highlight some of the work created during his sabbatical as well as work created since his return. On display will be Bruns’s ink wash paintings of Japanese Buddhist Temples and Shinto Shrines. These works are made using acrylic ink, as a substitute for more traditional sumi ink, in monochrome of either blue or gold. Each piece has areas of high resolution around the focal points and abstract ink splatters or uncontrolled washes in other areas to balance the realism.
Bruns will host a demonstration and discussion titled “Working in Ink Abroad” on Sunday, May 15th from 1:00-3:00pm. This event will allow attendees to see his sketchbooks from three years of travel in Asia and Oceania. Bruns will also discuss and demonstrate how the technique used in plein air ink sketches relates to his more resolved ink washes in the studio.

Just Add Water is a series of art clinics designed around a theme. If the name doesn’t give it away, we’re adding water to water-based media to create incredible works of art. While each clinic explores a different medium in a four-week burst, artists will find that what they learn in one clinic will be enhanced by other clinics in the series.
Session 4 “Ink Wash” Description
Ink wash is not just mono chrome watercolor. It is a medium that celebrates sunlight and deep shadow, abstract shapes and high realism. It’s a chance to show off tight drawing skills and allow for spatters and happy accidents. It can be as simple or as complex as you want to make it. This is a great Art Clinic for drawing students as well as students interested in water-based painting.
Session 5 “Mix and Match Water Media” Description
Just Add Water- Mix and Match Water Media is the ULTIMATE art materials experimentation Art Clinic. With water-based mediums to choose from, you might find the options overwhelming! For this Art Clinic, we’ll work with you to find what mixed media technique works best for you. The instructors have broken the options into “color” and “black and white” from there, we’ll devise a plan of attack on the best method to create fun and beautiful works of art. You are welcome to explore one option for all four classes or try a variety of different approaches. You might even take a technique you learned in a previous “Just Add Water Art Clinic” and develop your own twist!

J. Jordan Bruns
Session 2: Thursday, May 19- June 9, “Borrowing from the Masters”

Session 2 “Borrow from the Masters"
Picasso was quoted saying “good artists borrow, great artists steal”. There is some truth to that, as we have seen masters borrowing from one another over and over throughout art history. We’ll take a look at some of the major thefts by the masters and see how they made the stolen goods their own masterpieces. In class, we’ll do our own homage to the masters by taking a beloved painting and finding ways to make it our own.

We'll focus on increasing visual sensitivity, cultivating technical skills, and understanding the steps of building a drawing. Please note there is an additional $15 model fee for Session 1 and a $30 model fee for sessions 2&3 paid in class.
About Session 3 of Experimental Drawing, Drawing on Toned Paper
There is a tendency for artists to forget that paper comes in all shades and colors. Typically for artists, the paper is white, and we only draw line and/or shadow. With a toned paper, you have the opportunity to draw line, shadow, AND light! Session 3 of Experimental Drawing celebrates the toned surface. Regardless of whether you create the toned surface yourself, or if you begin with paper that has a tone or slight color, we’ll make incredible artwork drawing both shadow and light. Please note there is a $30 model fee paid in class.

Abstract Representation Art Clinic - Friday 1:30 – 4:00pm
J. Jordan Bruns and Mariana Kastrinakis
Session 3: Friday, June 24 – August 12, 1:30 – 4:00pm
6 Spots Available
Abstract Representation is designed for artists with traditional backgrounds to think abstractly in their work. This class pushes your understanding of composition design, color relationships, and eye movement and promotes using your artistic license. This is an ideal class for artists who want to take their work to a new level.
About Session 3: Abstract Painting from Masterpieces
Session 3 of Abstract Representation piggybacks on Session 2, but it is not necessary that you have participated in Session 2. We’re running with the idea of working from fine art, and changing it through abstraction. Picasso says, “good artists borrow, great artists steal”. He’s an excellent example of someone who has taken a famous painting and reworked the composition, subject, and color to make it something entirely different. What can we learn from reinventing an old master painting? After selecting our masterpiece to reinvent, we’ll devise a plan to change the painting to fit with our time period and painting style. We’ll finish our Art Clinic working from the live model. This is a great Art Clinic for both abstract and representational artists alike. Please note there is a model fee of $20 paid in class.
This is an intermediate to advanced level Art Clinic.
