The Scoop from Glendening!
February 2019
A Message from Principal, Curt Brogan

Brr... the weather has been unpredictable this month to say the least! I wanted to remind you that students have outside recess whenever the weather permits (typically when the temperature with windchill is above 25 °F ). This means students need to dress appropriately for the weather both at recess and during arrival and dismissal. Since our doors open at 8:45 each morning, we ask that students not be dropped off until this time so they can avoid waiting in the cold.

We are getting into the testing season, so I wanted to explain some of the tests students will take and share important dates with you. Students in grades K-5 recently took the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) for the second time this school year. This test tracks the growth of our students in Reading, Math, and Science (5th grade only). We will take the test again in May to see progress over the entire year. We have AIR testing (statewide tests) in grades 3-5 coming up the week of April 8th (3-5 ELA) and from April 30th-May 8th (3-5 Math and 5 Science). More information will be sent out as we get closer to April.

Finally, I wanted to share one of many celebrations we're grateful for this year. We set a goal for our building to reduce discipline referrals to the office by 10% from last year. In looking at our discipline data, we're on track to meet this goal and keep our students i n the classroom learning. You'll read more below about how we're helping to reduce our discipline referrals with SEL learning.

Thanks for sharing your awesome kids with us!

Social-Emotional Learning
This year, Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is a main focus throughout our district, and we’re excited about the positive changes it’s bringing to our students and staff at Glendening. Social Emotional Learning includes teaching and supports that help students understand and manage emotions, set and achieve goals, feel and show empathy, establish and maintain positive peer relationships, and make responsible decisions.

Our Schoolhouse meetings help us teach these skills. Each month's meeting has a theme that teachers support in their classrooms. Themes covered this year include; My Safe and Caring School, Discovering our Feelings, My Support System, Respect, Bullying, and Cooperation. The SEL work continues in the classroom with class meetings and visits from our counselor, Ms. Winhoven and her intern, Ms. Marshall.

It’s great to see our students showing our 3Rs, “Respect, Responsibility, and Readiness,” each day to help this continue to be a great place to be. Hopefully you’re seeing some of these same traits from your students at home. Thank you for being an important part of your child’s support system and cooperating with us here at school!

Student Recognition
We love recognizing all of the great things our students do each day at school. Here are just a few ways that we emphasize the positive our students bring to Glendening:

Student of the Week
Every Friday, each staff member can select a student as their Student of the Week. Names are called over the intercom and students report to the office for a prize. Some weeks we recognize as many as 50 of our students!

Horseshoe Tickets
These are our “caught being good” awards which students receive from any staff member. Horseshoes are given for academic achievements as well as behavior and mindset accomplishments. Students can earn raffle prizes with their Horseshoes.

3 R Awards
During Schoolhouse Meetings, every staff member selects a student who has shown Respect, Responsibility, and Readiness during the month. We showcase these students all year with a picture in the front hall.

Stellar Student
Each grading period, teachers choose students to recognize at our Stellar Student Breakfast (or end of the year cookout). This award honors grades as well as effort and behavior.

Girls on the Run
We are pleased to announce the second season of Girls on the Run has officially begun here at Glendening, under the leadership of Mrs. Minton and Mrs. Goodyear! Girls on the Run is a positive youth development program for girls in grades 3-5. Girls are taught life skills through interactive lessons and running games. The program culminates with the girls being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a 5k run. Our first season participants ran a 5k at the Columbus Commons in November and many are back for a second season. Glendening is proud of our Girls on the Run!

Valentine Ball
On Friday, February 8 our PTO sponsored our first Valentine Day Ball. Families enjoyed a night of dancing, hula hoop contests, crafts, cookie decorating, balloon creations, delicious snacks, and visiting with friends. The Book Fair was also open for families to do a little shopping, a photo booth was set up for capturing special memories with friends and family, and prizes were raffled off. Thanks to all of our PTO members who helped plan and organize the event, our staff members who volunteered their time to help out, and our families for joining us for a night of fun!
