ACE Internationalization Lab Adviser
David Fleshler Visits UC San Diego

On October 14-16,
David Fleshler
, Vice Provost for International Affairs at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, paid a visit to campus. Mr Fleshler is UC San Diego's appointed Adviser for the American Council on Education's (ACE) Internationalization Lab, and will support the Internationalization Lab's Steering Committee and subcommittees as the campus develops strategies for comprehensive internationalization. Mr Fleshler spearheaded the Internationalization Lab process at Case Western from 2010 to 2012 as their Senior International Officer, and was chosen to be one of 12 Advisers for colleges and universities that participate in the Internationalization Lab.
During his visit, Mr Fleshler met with campus stakeholders, including faculty, students, staff and administration to learn about UC San Diego, current global engagement and structure to better understand how to best assist campus throughout the Lab process.
UC San Diego is currently in Phase One of the Lab that will last until December 2019. In addition to the site visit by the ACE Adviser, the Steering Committee chairs established the Steering Committee and are in the process of forming various subcommittees to engage in specific topics related to campus's internationalization.

Global Education and Office of International Affairs Launch New Partnerships Database
|
|
In September, Global Education and the Office of International Affairs (OIA) published a new database that contains information on UC San Diego's agreements with international partners called
partnerships.ucsd.edu
. With this database, users can easily discover more about the 217 (and growing) active Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs), Collaborative Agreements and Letters of Intent (LOI) that UC San Diego has with institutions abroad. The partnership database provides a glimpse into UC San Diego's regional engagement, with publicly available information featuring our partner institutions, faculty leads and more.
Currently, the database contains agreements from all ten UC San Diego divisions and schools. Global Education and OIA plan to incorporate agreements from UC San Diego Extension International Programs and the Office of Contracts and Grant Administration featuring international sponsored research collaborations.

2019 Fall International Student Orientation
|
|
In line with ISPO's reshaping of the international student experience at the Pre-Arrival stage, ISPO has taken a brand new approach to the International Student Orientation. This was the first year implementing a conference-style series of workshops for new international students in an effort to accommodate students' busy schedules and topical interests. A total of 24 workshops were run and covered a range of topics including working in the U.S., campus safety and security and adjusting to a U.S. university classroom environment.
Majority of the workshops had an attendance rate of 70% or higher, which was a 15% improvement over last year's attendance rates.
In addition, each day kicked off with "ISPO Coffee Hours," a place where students were able to connect and engage with one another and ISPO staff in a relaxed and fun environment outside the ISPO office. The ISPO Coffee Hours included coffee, pastries, games, music and the very popular "Postcard Station" where students could write a postcard to a friend or family member and have ISPO mail it. Overall, ISPO documented more than 4,500 touch points with students. This workshop-style seemed to resonate with students because of the increased flexibility and more focused topics.
ISPO is following up orientation with a resources fair called "Out of the Woods" on
October 17 at Student Center B. It will be an open-house style event expecting up to 500 attendees and featuring campus support resources, student organizations, mini-presentations on international student topics of interest, as well as food games, and fun!

The
International Faculty & Scholars Office (IFSO)
invites Departmental administrators who work with international faculty, researchers and their dependents to attend the office's annual Open House. The Open House is an opportunity for IFSO staff to meet and thank in person administrators from across campus who usually interact with IFSO through phone and email.
The Open House includes tasty food and information about what is new at IFSO, including the upcoming roll-out of our online paperless J-1 request process (called “International Scholar Dossier,” or ISD); there will be two 15-minute demonstrations of the new system. Additionally, information will be provided about the services our campus-affiliated groups “Friends of the International Center” and “Oceanids” provide to our international faculty and researchers.

International Scholar Dossier: Online J-1 Request Process
|
The International Faculty & Scholars Office announces the upcoming roll-out of the new online J-1 request process, called “International Scholar Dossier” (ISD). ISD will facilitate the J-1 request process by allowing the visitor to login directly to this web-based application at the specific invitation of the sponsoring department. When the scholar has completed inputting their information and uploading scans of documents to the system, the departmental administrator will have the opportunity to review this information, and input/upload department-specific information about the appointment, and submit the record electronically to IFSO.
IFSO will then review the electronic record and, if complete, import it directly into our information system, and proceed with issuing the DS-2019. IFSO staff anticipate rolling out the product to a Beta test group early in 2020, and then expanding it campus-wide. Eventually, the employment-based (H-1B, TN, and E3) request process will be incorporated within the new online system. The goal is to improve efficiencies within the overall request process and enhance our office’s sustainability efforts. Please attend the Open House on November 21 for a demonstration!

Study Abroad 34th Annual EXPO Fair
|
The 2019 Study Abroad EXPO is Monday, 21 October from 10 am - 2 pm in the Price Center. This event is for UC San Diego students to learn about the many opportunities to study, work, conduct research or volunteer abroad, be it for one week or an entire academic year. Study Abroad Staff will be present to answer any questions the students may have. Students can learn how to leverage financial aid and scholarship opportunities so that study abroad can serve as a smart investment to their academic experience. Each year dozens of programs participate in UC San Diego's Study Abroad EXPO, with over 1,000 students attending. The event is FREE and open to the UC San Diego community.

Global Seminars for Summer 2020 Announced
|
|
The faculty-led Global Seminars for Summer 2020 have been announced. Global Seminars are five-week summer study abroad experiences in which faculty members teach cohorts of 15-28 students in different countries around the world. This summer, seventeen Global Seminars will take faculty and students to countries in Europe, South America, Asia and Africa.
Global Seminars are the fastest growing study abroad programs at UC San Diego, with a 74% increase in enrollment over the past five years.
