School of Public Health and Brazilian Fulbright Commission to Launch Distinguished Chair

The Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science (HWSPH) has partnered with the Fulbright Commission in Brazil to launch an inaugural Fulbright Distinguished Chair position in Public Health. Championed by Professor Michael Pratt and Dean Cheryl Anderson, this grant will provide $20,000 for a Brazilian academic or researcher to spend four months at UC San Diego teaching and/ or conducting research in the field of Public Health beginning in Fall 2021. The award is part of the Fulbright Program which aims to promote mutual understanding between peoples from the United States and other countries. The Distinguished Chair position is the most prestigious award within the Fulbright Scholar Program.
This award further deepens UC San Diego's strong ties with Brazil. In addition to faculty peer relationships and active research and mobility agreements with Brazilian institutions, the Brazilian population at UC San Diego is consistently one of the largest cohorts of all nationalities. Brazilians are the ninth largest international student population, making Brazil the only Latin American country to be within the top ten at UC San Diego. In the 2019-20 Academic Year, the total number of Brazilian scholars on campus increased 20 percent and jumped from the eighth largest scholar population to fifth.

Global Education Launches Exchange Programs
in Switzerland
Global Education continues to expand international opportunities for STEM students through two new undergraduate Global Exchange Programs with Switzerland's École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) and the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW). EPFL's Internationally renowned School of Basic Sciences offers UC San Diego students English-language courses in physics, mathematics, chemistry and biochemistry and access to research opportunities at EPFL's research park or nearby industry partners. In addition to the academic year exchange component, both UC San Diego undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to apply for the prestigious, fully-funded three-month EPFL Research Internship program. The exchange agreement was championed by Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry and Associate Dean for Education and Students in the Division of Physical Sciences, Thomas Hermann. Physical Sciences faculty members of the Division are currently evaluating which EPFL courses would fulfill major and minor requirements at UC San Diego.
In addition to university funding, UC San Diego students interested in summer research opportunities can apply for the ThinkSwiss scholarship and other similar awards provided by the Swiss government.

Importance of International Education Examined in Triton Tools and Tidbits Podcast
Global Education Director Courtney Giordano hosts the Triton Tools and Tidbits podcast episode entitled Triton Global View. The podcast was released during International Education Week (IEW), a global campaign that aims to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. This year, more than 30 international programs were organized during IEW, including panel discussions, study abroad information sessions, foreign film screenings, global cuisine cooking demonstrations and social mixers.
This episode examines the critical importance of international education and exchange, and features several internationally-engaged members of the UC San Diego community. Jay Minert, Director of Outreach & Academic Engagement in Study Abroad UC San Diego discusses the opportunities and resources available for students who want to participate in one of the many programs to study, volunteer, conduct research or intern abroad. Literature Professor, Alumnus and Global Seminar faculty leader Babak Rahimi shares how his experience as an exchange student in Scotland inspired him to lead UC San Diego students abroad each summer. Grace Fuller, Manager of International Student Experience and Engagement in the International Students & Programs Office (ISPO) touches on the many positive aspects of studying and working on a diverse, highly internationalized campus and explains how student can earn hours to obtain a Global Engaged Tritons Co-Curricular Record (CCR) Certificate. The episode concludes with Ayushi Agrawal, an international student in Muir College and an International Peer Coach, who shares how being an international student at UC San Diego has had a profound impact on her life and why international education is so important in today's world.

UC San Diego Climbs to Eighth in U.S. in Total Number
of International Students in 2018-2019
UC San Diego jumped to the #8 spot in the U.S. for the total number of international students, according to the Institute of International Education's (IIE) Open Doors Top 25 Leading Institutions data. With a total service population of 11,272 undergraduate, graduate and non-degree students, UC San Diego's international enrollment numbers remain high despite the national trend of declining international student enrollment. This can be attributed to UC San Diego's excellent academic reputation, global academic rankings, high retention rates of international students from years reflecting double digit growth, and an increase in number of students pursuing post-completion employment after graduation. ISPO continues to support our international students in the many challenges they are facing during this pandemic in reaching their academic, personal and professional goals.

Study Abroad Co-Hosts First UC Virtual Fall Expo
This Fall, Study Abroad UC San Diego collaborated with study abroad offices from sister campuses on the first ever UC Study Abroad Virtual Expo. What is usually a one-day tabling event at each campus became a week-long, system-wide virtual fair with more than 70 live and pre-recorded events and programs. Topics included financial aid and scholarship information, programs in STEM and other disciplines, diversity and identity issues, career readiness and post-graduate program opportunities and a variety of exciting future global program offerings. The two most popular programs at UC San Diego, the UC Education Abroad Program (UCEAP) and UC San Diego's faculty-led Global Seminars program were highlighted throughout the week. UC San Diego received nearly 600 student registrations which demonstrates that there remains high interest in study abroad among our student population.
The Virtual Expo was a resounding success, remarkable for both the concerted effort and resource sharing across the system. UC study abroad offices are reconvening this quarter to discuss organizing another Virtual Expo during Winter Quarter. Throughout Fall, Study Abroad staff advised more than 1,500 students on the various ways to build an international adventure into their academic experience. Additionally, Study Abroad staff has hosted nearly 40 webinars on topics ranging from virtual internships to how to use financial aid and how write exceptional scholarship applications. The office is also conducting outreach to students who will graduate this year to provide information on the many opportunities available for recent graduates such as nationally competitive scholarships, English teaching positions and volunteer programs.

A Scholar's Perspective on Life and Research During the Pandemic |
Despite the pandemic inhibiting international mobility, UC San Diego remains one of the most attractive institutions for international scholars. According to the recent data released by the International Education's (IIE) Open Doors Report, UC San Diego maintains its place as the eighth largest host of international scholars in the U.S.
