Global Education and the Graduate Division are hosting UC San Diego's fourth annual Fulbright Day to educate students, scholars, faculty and staff on the available funding opportunities through the Fulbright Program. Undergraduate and graduate students can learn about opportunities to teach English, work, conduct research, advance their dissertation research or enroll in a graduate program. Additionally, UC San Diego faculty and scholars can learn about the vast opportunities available through the 2022-2023 Catalog of Awards (more information below).
The day's sessions will feature groups of panelists, including former Fulbright Award recipients, who will answer questions and share their Fulbright experiences.
Fulbright Day's mission is to connect the campus community to resources for a successful Fulbright Award application. UC San Diego has a strong legacy of generating and attracting Fulbright grantees as well as being recognized as a Top Producing Scholar Institution. For the 2021-2022 academic year, 25 percent of Fulbright Student Award applicants successfully received a grant. Currently, UC San Diego hosts a diverse cohort of degree-seeking Fulbrighters, including students from Argentina, Chile, Germany, New Zealand, Norway, Pakistan, South Korea, Spain, Taiwan and Turkey as well as Fulbright visiting scholars throughout each academic year.

Fulbright Awards Catalog 2022-23 Now Open for U.S. Scholars |
The Fulbright Scholar Program offers diverse opportunities for U.S. academics, administrators, and professionals to teach, research and attend seminars abroad under the auspices of the U.S. Department of State's most prestigious fellowship program. The application cycle for the 2022-23 academic year is now open for the many international opportunities available in the awards catalog.
Award types range from Distinguished Scholar appointments to early career postdoctoral awards, and include two-week in-country seminars for administrators to learn about host country education systems and to network with U.S. and international colleagues.
Fulbright opportunities range from a few months to a full year; Flex option awards allow for multiple short in-country or multi-country stays that offer further flexibility in accommodating teaching and research schedules.
The deadline for most proposals is September 15, 2021.

"10 Things to Consider When Supporting International Students in a Virtual Environment" Guide
ISPO acknowledges the many challenges that international students, faculty, and staff have faced in the transition to virtual learning while prioritizing health and safety during the COVID-19 pandemic. For our international Tritons currently outside of the U.S., these challenges can be compounded by differing time zones and inconsistent or unreliable internet access in their home countries or regions.
ISPO compiled a useful resource that addresses primary issues our international students face as well as best practices for faculty and staff to consider when supporting students.

Globally Engaged Tritons Co-Curricular Record |
The Globally Engaged Tritons (GET) Co-Curricular Record (CCR) Certificate allows students to earn credit on their CCR for their involvement in events that promote the global engagement and internationalization of campus.
Many opportunities for student life and campus engagement have been severely limited due to the pandemic and the subsequent transition to remote instruction. However, the GET CCR Certificate stands out as a chance for students to stay and get involved, develop professionally, and connect with other students and the Triton community.
To date, 168 students are enrolled in the Certificate program with a total of 894 hours of global engagement accrued.

Study Abroad UC San Diego is partnering with @Hacker Exchange to recruit students to compete in their Great Global Challenge, a fast-paced, innovative, international six-day summer virtual experience that trains students to lead and stand out in the digital talent market while cultivating a global professional network.
UC San Diego students and students from three other UCs (Santa Cruz, Riverside and Irvine) will be organized into teams with peers from Australia, Canada, the UK and Ghana. These teams will work together to formulate innovative solutions to address some of the world's most pressing challenges. Last year was the first year UC San Diego students participated in the Great Global Challenge, and a UC San Diego Sociology student was a member of the the first place team!
The cost to participate in the Great Global Challenge is $700 and scholarships are available to off-set or cover the cost. Students can find more information on applying for the scholarships HERE. The deadline to apply for scholarships is March 15.
Study Abroad UC San Diego's collaboration with the @Hacker Exchange is an exemplary program within the office's larger mission to provide students with high-impact international opportunities in a time of limited and disrupted overseas travel.

Calling all Faculty: Global Seminar Summer 2022 Request for Proposals
UC San Diego Global Seminars are launching a variety of new and creative program modalities for Summer 2022. In addition to the traditional five-week study abroad model for Global Seminars, four additional options will be available to faculty for next summer:
- "Study Away" opportunities in U.S. states and territories;
- Hybrid Global Seminars, which are a blend of two-week periods on-site internationally and three weeks of remote and/or on-campus instruction;
- A pilot summer internship Global Seminar for seven to ten weeks;
- Virtual Global Seminars.
These different program structures will reduce the overall cost of participation, making Global Seminars more accessible to a broader student population. With domestic programs, Study Abroad can also reach and serve new under-represented populations such as undocumented students. Additionally, the flexibility and shorter durations away from San Diego will hopefully entice UC San Diego faculty who may not be able to commit to a full five-week traditional Global Seminar.
UC San Diego Global Seminars is piloting six virtual Global Seminars in Summer 2021. The virtual programs feature new Global Seminars such as Sea Turtles and Tropical Ecology in Costa Rica led by Professor Jonathan Shurin and long-running popular programs such as Revelle in Rome led by Professor William Tronzo.
Jim Galvin, Director of Program Development for Global Seminars, is available to assist faculty with proposal development and identifying locations and course offerings. Proposals for Summer 2022 are due April 15, 2021, with final decisions made in June.

IFSO is excited to announce the relaunch of our Scholar's Spotlight webpage featuring Dr. Marcos Díaz-Gay, a postdoctoral scholar in the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine and a fellow in the Alexandrov Lab at UC San Diego. Dr Díaz-Gay shares some of his experiences coming to San Diego, research, links of interest and fun facts about himself.
