Hello from Friends! Here is a quick look at what's new in our work to fight AIDS, tuberculosis (TB) and malaria in the age of COVID-19.
Global Fund Raises Record Level of Support
 At Its 7th Replenishment
The Global Fund broke records at its seventh financing summit hosted by the U.S., raising $14.25 billion to continue progress against AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.

“Today is historic, breaking records for international investment in global health...We saw major donors, including the majority of G7 countries, substantially increase their pledges even in the midst of multiple global crises. "– President & CEO Chris Collins

Two of the Global Fund’s largest contributors, Italy and the United Kingdom, will pledge in the coming weeks to push the overall funding amount closer to the $18 billion goal.

Highlights from President Joe Biden's speech at replenishment:

  • “Now is the moment to accelerate our efforts to reduce health inequities… to build a more inclusive healthcare system, to leave no one behind; to end AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria for good.”

  • "The U.S. will donate $1 billion dollars for every $2 billion committed by the rest of the world. That means we're gonna work with our partners in Congress to contribute another $6 billion to the Global Fund."
Highlights: World Leaders and U.S. Government Officials Gather in NYC for UNGA 77
Forty-five countries-- including 18 heads of state, multilateral partners, private sector companies and civil society organizations-- gathered in New York City to save 20 million lives, avert 450 million new infections and prepare the world for the next pandemic.

–Ambassador Samantha Power of USAID opened up the replenishment conference, calling on other donors to raise $18 billion for the Global Fund.
Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield reaffirmed the United States' commitment to help get the world back on track to ending AIDS, TB and malaria as epidemics.


At an event sponsored by Friends' and Business Council for International Understanding, Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield met with President & CEO Chris Collins and Chief Policy Officer Mark P. Lagon in advance of the Global Fund's 7th replenishment.

President Biden meets with civil society activists from Global Fund implementing countries including, Ukraine, Sri Lanka and Uganda.
2022 Global Fund Results Report:
50 Million Lives Saved
The Global Fund partnership has saved 50 million lives since 2002, according to the annual Results Report released on September 12th.

Thanks to the Global Fund's swift response to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, the world protected hard-won gains against HIV, tuberculosis (TB) and malaria with progress in key programmatic results across all three diseases.


HIV:
  • 23.3 million people on antiretroviral therapy for HIV in 2021
  • 12.5 million people were reached with HIV prevention services in 2021.

Tuberculosis:
  • 5.3 million people were treated for tuberculosis in 2021; in addition, 110,000 people were treated for drug-resistant tuberculosis.

Malaria:
  • 133 million mosquito nets were distributed in 2021.
  • 148 million cases of malaria were treated in 2021.
The Global Fund's Reach in Fragile, Crisis Settings: Defeating AIDS, TB & Malaria
Friends' hosted a discussion on how the Global Fund is uniquely suited to reach the world’s most vulnerable communities in fragile, crisis settings.

Speakers included civil society leaders and policy-makers from Mali, Japan, Ukraine, Sri Lanka and France.

Financing the Fight: A Conversation with President & CEO Chris Collins (Devex)

War-Torn Ukraine Is Also an HIV & Tuberculosis Hot Spot (Foreign Policy)
Senior Policy Director Shannon Kellman wrote a piece in Foreign Policy describing how Ukraine's health systems adapted to Russia's invasion, providing lessons on crisis response for the world.
2022 Assessment of the Global Fund (MOPAN)
In a recently release report, the Multilateral Organisation Performance Assessment Network (MOPAN) assessed the performance of the Global Fund.

'The Global Fund’s flexible and evolving operational approach is continually reviewed and allows for a nimble response. This has been particularly important during the COVID-19 pandemic."
