Sophie Huddart, PhD, has received an award from the American Thoracic Society to examine how digital health tools, such as wearables, can track biomarkers during and after TB treatment.  

Ingrid Chen, PhD, MS, has been awarded a grant from the Innovative Vector Control Consortium to research whether mosquitos can become resistant to the active ingredients in spatial emanators—a type of product used to eliminate mosquitos that spread malaria and dengue.

Mike Reid, MD, has received a Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Light Touch award to convene experts to explore how AI can transform HIV care and prevention in low-income, high HIV burden countries. 

IGHS affiliate member Lauren Haack, PhD, and the UCSF Social-Transcultural Research and Intervention Valuing Equity (STRIVE) lab received an award from the National Institutes of Health to study school clinician training and ADHD/Oppositional Defiant Disorder intervention in Mexico.

The Malaria Elimination Initiative was awarded a $10-million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to enhance mosquito surveillance and control in five African countries.

IGHS is pleased to welcome the Health and Human Rights Initiative and the Center for Tuberculosis to the IGHS community. Both groups have officially joined IGHS, and this integration marks a significant step toward the institute’s commitment to addressing global health challenges through multidisciplinary collaboration and innovation. 

IGHS’ Center for Pandemic Preparedness and Response focuses on global health security, enhancing public health surveillance, and implementing the One Health approach to tackle health threats through multi-sectoral collaboration.

Christina Mangurian, MD, MAS, professor of psychiatry at the UCSF Weill Institute for Neurosciences, has won the Harold S. Luft Award for Mentoring in Health Services and Health Policy Research.

Coleen Sabatini, MD, MPH, professor of pediatric orthopaedics at the UCSF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, has received the 2024 Humanitarian Award from the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America for her dedication to improving musculoskeletal care for children in underserved communities globally. 

Adrian Gelb, MD, professor emeritus at the UCSF Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Care, was honored with the 2024 Nicholas M. Greene, MD Award for Outstanding Humanitarian Contribution by the American Society of Anesthesiologists for his contributions to advancing anesthesia education and training worldwide.  

Marissa Boeck, MD, MPH, assistant professor of surgery at the UCSF Department of Surgery, has been selected as a 2024 Health Disparities Research Institute Scholar by the National Institute of Minority Health Disparities for her contributions as an acute care surgeon and health equity advocate.

This July, 37 master’s students graduated from IGHS’ MS program in Global Health, with several receiving awards for outstanding capstone projects and contributions to community and leadership. 

Applications for the MS in Global Health and the PhD in Global Health Sciences programs opened on September 15. The deadline for the MS application is June 16, 2025; it is Dec. 13, 2024 for the PhD application.

The Center for Health Equity in Surgery and Anesthesia (CHESA) will present its Global Health Equity Fellowship and highlight a project led by an alumnus. The fellowship leverages UCSF resources and expertise to cultivate and mentor the next generation of global surgery and anesthesia leaders.
