UC Davis Global Aggies Blog: “A Semester in Madrid: Kate Villegas’s Study Abroad Journey”

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​UC Davis student Kate Villegas spent a semester abroad in Madrid, Spain, where she strengthened her Spanish skills, explored Latin American history and connected with her cultural roots. The experience inspired her to become a Global Learning Hub peer advisor, helping other students pursue global opportunities and encouraging them to embrace new challenges abroad.

Program Spotlight: Brewing and Beer (New Summer Intensive)

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Earn six units in three weeks while you travel through Germany and Belgium to explore the history, science and cultural impact of the world’s most popular beverage—beer. Examine how barley and hops shape brewing and quality, visit historic and modern breweries, and discover how beer has influenced societies, economies and traditions for centuries.


University of California Education Abroad Program (UCEAP)

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​UCEAP offers programs of various lengths and terms. Available program options include immersion experiences, special focus areas, language and culture studies, and internships. Applications open in November for 2026-27 programs. Start your search now.

Global Leadership, Internships and Research


U21 Sustainable Micro-Internships

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​These free, two-week virtual internships connect UC Davis students with peers worldwide to tackle real global challenges in areas such as decent work, quality education and climate action. Spaces filled on a first-completed basis. The next sessions run from November through February. Deadline: November 13.

 

Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX)

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​CBYX is a one-year, fully funded cultural immersion program in Germany for U.S. citizens aged 18.5–24 during the 2026–27 academic year. Recipients spend two months in intensive German language study, followed by one semester of classes in their chosen field at a local university, and finish with a three- to five-month internship in their career field. Apply now. Deadline: November 1.


Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​The JET Program is a competitive employment opportunity to live and work in Japan. Serve as Assistant Language Teachers, working in public and private schools or as Coordinators for International Relations as interpreters/translators. Receive a monthly salary, health insurance and costs for travel to/from Japan. Apply now. Deadline: November 14.


University of Lausanne (UNIL) Summer Undergraduate Research (SUR) Programme

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​UNIL’s SUR Programme offers third-year biology and medicine students an immersive eight-week research experience in Lausanne, Switzerland, combining lab work, academic seminars and cultural exchange to inspire future careers in science. Housing is provided, along with a living expenses scholarship and opportunities for travel reimbursement. Apply now. Deadline: December 31.


Technical University of Munich Practical Research Experience Program (TUM PREP)

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Together with TUM scientists, TUM PREP students work in small research teams on a research project. The program includes accommodation support, a €1,000 scholarship, orientation and framework program, and TUM buddies program. Info Session: October 21. Deadline: November 23.

 

DAAD Research Internships in Science and Engineering (RISE) Scholars

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​The RISE program offers undergraduates in the fields of biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, earth sciences and physics the opportunity to complete a funded summer research internship at top German universities and research institutions. Receive a monthly stipend for three months to help cover living expenses. Apply beginning on October 15. Deadline: November 30.

UC Davis Undergraduate Research Travel Awards

The Undergraduate Research Center Travel Awards provide support for students presenting their research or creative work at professional conferences. Students may apply for funding to help offset travel costs for events hosted by regionally, nationally or internationally recognized organizations. Deadline: November 3.


Lafayette Fellowship Program: One Year of Master’s Study in France

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​The Lafayette Fellowship, created by the French Embassy in the U.S., celebrates Franco-American friendship by offering one year of fully funded master’s study at leading French universities across eight cities. Alongside their academic coursework, fellows will participate in an immersive leadership development program and receive mentorship. Apply now. Deadline: November 30.

 

Blakemore Freeman Fellowships

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Applications are now open for this fellowship, which provides a stipend for one academic year (two semesters or three quarters) of advanced-level language study in East or Southeast Asia. By the start of the grant, applicants should have received a bachelor’s degree and the equivalent of three years of language study. Deadline: December 30.

 

Siddall Sheffield Scholarship

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​The University of Sheffield’s Siddall Sheffield Scholarship offers full tuition and a £18,000 (approx. $23,000) stipend for a one-year engineering masters. Open to talented U.S. students across a range of disciplines—from aerospace to computer science. Apply now. Deadline: January 13.

 

Donald A. Strauss Scholarship

Scholarships of $15,000 are available to sophomore and junior level students of any citizenship status with a desire to “make a difference” in local, national or international communities. Recipients implement a sustainable public service project anywhere in the world. Info Session: October 15, 4 p.m. Deadline: February 9.

Lafayette Fellowship Student Webinar

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​October 21, 1–2 p.m., virtual. Learn more about the Lafayette Fellowship, a new graduate fellowship offered by the French Embassy in the United States. Lafayette supports 30 American students for one year of master’s level study in one of 15 French institutions with full tuition and fees, $20,000 stipend and participation in the French-American Leadership Program. The (Virtual) Germany Grad Fair 2025

Critical Language Scholarship Program Info Session

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​October 27, 3 p.m., virtual. This session will provide an overview of the Critical Language Scholarship Program, including the application process and timeline. The program fully funds an intensive, structured 8-week summer language program in one of 12 eligible languages and a cultural immersion program in a country where the language is predominantly spoken.


Global Student Leadership Summit

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​October 29–31. Registration for the Global Student Leadership Summit (GSLS), held in Minneapolis, MN, is now open. GSLS is a student conference that prepares participants with the skills essential to being a successful leader in our global, interconnected society. Apply now for a scholarship to cover the registration costs.


Global Ambassador Mentorship Program-Pal Program Halloween Social

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​October 29, 5–7 p.m., International Center Lobby. Undergraduate students, join the Global Ambassador Mentorship Program and Pal Program for a ghostly Halloween social! Enjoy free food and candy, pumpkin painting, and a costume contest—with gift card prizes. Connect with students from around the world. Bring a friend—everyone is welcome!
