CONNECTING & CATALYZING FOR GLOBAL GOOD
YANA's mission,
Connecting and Catalyzing for Global Good
, received a big boost in January when Rachel Littman '91 - with unanimous board approval - stepped up to become our first Executive Director. In her new role, Rachel will oversee a wide range of YANA initiatives, including:
- Connecting and supporting Yale alumni involved in social impact through programming that advances their careers and organizational missions; and
- Leveraging the resources of our mission-driven community to maximize the reach and impact of YANA's global chapters; and
- Expanding our YANA-Dwight Hall Fellowship Program to support underserved Yale students seeking careers in nonprofit leadership.
Since January we have
raised enough funds to sponsor three YANA-Dwight Hall Fellows, published our first
Annual Report, and presented the first of our
YANA Tea Series.
We want to hear from
your perspective about how well
we are pursuing our mission. Has YANA connected you to new career or learning opportunities? Have you or someone you know benefited from YANA in any way, perhaps through introductions to nonprofit boards, jobs, internships, funding, or speaking gigs? If yes, we'd love to hear your story - large or small - on how being a part of the YANA community has positively impacted your life. To submit, please
.
Our goal is to collect as many stories as possible, then distill their essence into clear metrics that amplify YANA's message and sustain our work. As always, please
contact me directly
with any suggestions or comments.
With gratitude, Ken Inadomi '76, YANA Founding Chair

YANA UNVEILS FIRST-EVER ANNUAL REPORT!
|
We're delighted to present the 2018 YANA Annual Report - a compendium of YANA's organizational history, programming, people, and impact. A dedicated team of volunteers led by Executive Director Rachel Littman spent the last several months collecting the essential facts, figures, photos, and narratives to craft our YANA story, a remarkable eight-year journey of working together, giving back, and changing lives. The Report also includes a complete listing of our 2018 supporters who generated the dues and donations that have made our work possible.

Following an intense, one-month fundraising campaign in March, YANA raised enough to fund
three
YANA-Dwight Hall 2019 Summer Fellow
s
!
That's 3x as much money as we raised the prior year! Stay tuned for details about our 2019 Summer Fellows!
The Fellowship Program is designed to complement the Domestic Summer Award Fellowships, announced in 2017 by Yale College Dean, Marvin Chun, and is available to Yale students and recent graduates who are committed to pursuing a career in the social impact space but lack the financial resources to accept an unpaid internship critical to their career development. So far YANA has funded and supported four fellows who worked in social impact organizations all around the country.

INAUGURAL YANA EVENING TEA: KERMIT ROOSEVELT & THE JAPANESE INTERNMENT
|
On Apr. 28, YANA New York launched the first of
our YANA Evening Tea Series before a packed room at the Yale Club of NYC. Drawing from both scholarship and family stories, Kermit Roosevelt '97 Law, Professor of Law at the University of Pennsylvania, and Ken Inadomi '76, YANA Founding Chair, kicked off our YANA Evening Tea series with an engrossing discussion on the legal and personal experiences of the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II.
The YANA Teas are
inspired by the Head of College Teas
at Yale's residential colleges. These are discussions designed to highlight leading experts involved in advancing positive social change. Wine and other refreshments will be served (as our "evening equivalent" of a traditional college tea). We plan to bring the YANA Evening Tea Series to a YANA Chapter near you!

RECENT YC CONNECT HIGHLIGHTS
|
|
MS54 AFTERNOON ACADEMY
Andrew Strott
was one of the first volunteer tutors that Yale Community Connect recruited for the homework help pilot program Afternoon Academy, and he played a pivotal role in its success.
Andrew is currently a junior at Hunter College High School. Though he already fulfilled his community service requirement, he continued to tutor MS54 students who are struggling academically, because the experience was so gratifying to him:
"The impact that I have had on my students has 3 different aspects: our relationship, their grades, and their self-confidence. Through building such strong relationships with each of them and helping them to improve their grades, I have been able to instill a sense of confidence for them all both inside and outside of school that was lacking before."

Nina Jaroslaw
YC '85 offers her reflections on her volunteer experiences at experiences at Mosaic Prep Academy and Booker T. Washington JHS (MS54) since October 2018. Nina created an enrichment class, "Who Am I? Exploring Identity and Culture Through Self-Portraiture," for students in the 3rd to 5th grades, and now teaches a class twice a week to groups of 5th graders during their school day. Nina has built a lasting relationship with the teachers and administrators with whom she works.
"Week after week, I found myself in awe of their capacity for self-reflection, cultural questioning, and personal expression. And I am deeply grateful to YANA for opening the door to such an opportunity."
