YALE ALUMNI NONPROFIT ALLIANCE
Global Newsletter | Spring 2020
|
|
Dear Members of the YANA Community,
I hope this email finds you managing as well as you can during these unusual times.
In spite of the personal and economic stresses many in our community are facing, YANA has been lucky to be part of several silver linings. We’ve been able to build and even expand our online programming — finding new ways and opportunities to stay connected. Your inspiring stories have uplifted us, and we will continue to use our position to link people and organizations with one another.
This newsletter contains links to many videos and recaps of the Virtual Town Halls, Webinars, and online community building YANA has been privileged to host over the past few months. I hope you find them as inspiring as we do!
YANA continues to be the connections hub for students, alumni, and nonprofits asking for or offering assistance. Below, you can meet the outstanding 2020 YANA-Dwight Hall Summer Fellows, peruse organization accomplishments in our 2019 Annual Report, read about exciting innovative efforts in our Spotlights section, and learn about the many ways Yale Community Connect volunteers and partners are strengthening their communities.
Many thanks to all of you for your dedication to social impact and support of YANA. Your perseverance, innovation, and compassion are inspiring, and I am confident we will navigate this turbulence together to emerge even stronger.

The kind of work many of you do on the front lines, with limited budgets, working with vulnerable populations, and tackling seemingly insurmountable social challenges, can be trying in the best of times. In the current chaotic climate, we want you to know that we continue to cheer you on, provide support and community in whichever format we can, and share resources and information from our extensive network.

Shared Expertise & Community for Nonprofits
During the Coronavirus Pandemic

In an effort to bring our YANA community closer together, we hosted our first virtual town hall on Wednesday, March 25th. Yale nonprofit leaders shared their insights on dealing with the current crisis. We also shared and discussed the
results (and some useful resources) from our
recent survey we sent out to help form a broader understanding of the Coronavirus impact on nonprofit service delivery.

CARING CALLS & CARDMAKING WITH DOROT
|
Yale Community Connect is working
with
DOROT to provide a number of volunteer opportunities to connect with older adults in NYC & Westchester.
Form a phone connection with an older adult and let them know you care.
Making a card is easy, fun, and important in the work that we do to decrease social isolation among seniors. Sometimes, a card from a DOROT volunteer is the only communication an older adult has on special occasions.

DIGITAL SERVICE IN A VIRTUAL ERA:
Connecting the dots to help your community & save the world without leaving your home
May 9 | Zoom Webinar
|
|
On a day that thousands of Yalies were scheduled to gather all over the world for the 12th Yale DAY of Service, the concept of gathering has changed dramatically. However, the need for community building and local support are in higher demand than ever. Fellow alumni discussed the ways in which alumni groups can form and maintain relationships with local partners, and heard from one group that did just that during remarkable circumstances in the COVID 19 crisis.
Speakers included:
Andrew Burgie ’87, the hazardous materials training coordinator at New York University School of Global Public Health;
Liam Elkind ’21 & Simone Policano '16, Co-Founders of
Invisible Hands; and
Alison Gardy ’88, Founder of Gardy Communication strategies. This webinar was moderated by
Xiaoyan Huang ’91, MD, MHCM, FACC, who is a member of the Yale Alumni Board of Governors and is a cardiologist and Medical Director of General Cardiology at Providence Heart Clinic in Portland, OR.
