YANA GLOBAL NEWSLETTER
WINTER 2018

FASTER & FARTHER IN 2019
Sending warm greetings to all alumni and friends, as YANA enters its 8th year! Whenever I'm thinking about our ongoing challenge to scale collective impact, I'm reminded of this timeless African proverb:
If you want to go fast, go alone; but if you want to go far, go together.
YANA's work is continually fueled by 'going together' with several dedicated organizations within the YAA. For example: From 1stGenYale, we've gained a deeper understanding of how to connect students and alums in meaningful ways. From the Task Force on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, we are better equipped to combat unconscious bias. And from Yale in Hollywood's conferences in NY and LA, we've learned the emotional impact and power of big, bold events.
Here's to 2019, and may it be another year full of collaboration - as we continue to go faster and farther together!
With gratitude, Ken Inadomi '76, YANA Founding Chair

YANA-DWIGHT HALL
SUMMER
FELLOWSHIP: IMPACT & UPDATES
The YANA-Dwight Hall Summer Fellowship Program supports Yale
undergraduates pursuing nonprofit fellowships.
This program is designed to complement the
Domestic Summer Award Fellowships
,
announced in 2017 by Yale College Dean, Marvin Chun. In 2018, the Summer Fellowship provided funding to Olivia Paschal '18 and Dasia Moore '18, who founded Go South, a program based in Savannah, Georgia that seeks to connect Yale students and alumni to Southern nonprofits.
Dasia's fellowship experience inspired her to further expand her involvement with YANA. L

YANA WINS 6TH CONSECUTIVE YAA BOARD OF GOVERNORS EXCELLENCE AWARD!
|
|
Lou Martarano, Rachel Littman,
and Ken Inadomi
|
|
YANA has received an unprecedented 6th Consecutive Excellence Award from the YAA Board of Governors! This award - Outstanding SIG Event - celebrates
YANA's
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Event in February 2018, featuring Elizabeth Alexander '84. We're thrilled that YANA's programming has now been recognized for two years in a row!
The event highlighted the missions of YANA, the YAA, and Yale: in unifying and organizing the Yale social impact community and leveraging it for the greater common good; conveying the important values of Yale (including service and social justice) from one generation to the next; and "inspiring the minds that inspire the world."

RECENT YC CONNECT HIGHLIGHTS

After-School Tutoring at MS54
YC Connect volunteers enabled the launch of the 6th Grade Academy pilot program, which has rapidly expanded and is now evolving into a sustainable effort that engages its
own student, parent and alumni body as tutors. Academy teachers are excited to report that students who have been tutored in the program (~2x/week) have shown noticeable improvement in classroom participation and graded assignments.
|
|
Darian Marcel Parker PhD '13
found opportunities to volunteer regularly with Harlem Children's Zone and Mosaic Prep Academy as a tutor, an experience he's found tremendously rewarding:
"In meeting with them from week-to-week, I feel that I have benefited just as much as I've contributed. For, in my helping them articulate their visions for their lives, they have helped me to boldly reclaim my own."

Mulchfest 2019
On Jan. 13, Yale Alumni joined Stanford Alumni in the NYC holiday tradition of recycling Christmas trees and wreaths, by processing them into mulch during Prospect Park's Annual Mulchfest
.
The trees were fed into a chipper, and the resulting mulch was distributed to the public for use in their gardens or as a room freshener. The remainder was spread at the base of trees around the park to facilitate growth. Volunteers from both groups enjoyed a meal at The Adirondack afterward!
