GOHi Monthly Webinar: The Updated Definition of One Health
This month's GOHi webinar featured Casey Barton Behravesh, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) One Health Office in the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases and a captain in the United States Public Health Service. During the webinar, Barton Behravesh presented the One Health High Level Expert Panel updated definition of One Health.
In collaboration with the Ethiopia Ministry of Health, Oromia Health Bureau, CDC and Unicef, GOHi completed an initial assessment on "Factors impacting the uptake and administration of the routine second dose of measles-containing vaccine (MCV2) for young children, Oromia Regional State, Ethiopia." The findings were presented at the International Conference on Emerging Infectious Disease (ICEID) Conference poster session. GOHi is currently involved in follow-up intervention assessments to improve outcomes of MCV2 administration by healthcare workers.
Barbara Kowalcyk, director of the Center for Foodborne Illness Research and Prevention at the Ohio State College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences, has been appointed chair of the Science Board of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Kowalcyk was first appointed to the FDA Science Board in 2013.
Risk ranking exercise conducted on food hazards in Ethiopia
GOHi has been working on the Assessment and Risk Management of Foodborne Illnesses (TARTARE) – a food safety project – since 2019. The overarching goal of this project is to reduce morbidity and mortality from foodborne diseases. Recently, GOHi conducted a risk ranking workshop to understand which hazards could be categorized as high risk, medium risk and low risk.
GOHi recently conducted training on metagenomics protocol and bioinformatics data analysis for the Ethiopian Public Health Institute's (EPHI) Genomic Core Facility. This facility aims to strengthen the capacity for genomic data analysis.
In collaboration with the EPHI, U.S. CDC, Africa CDC and World Health Organization (WHO), GOHi will conduct a cross-sectional, population-based sero-prevalence study on COVID-19 with more than 14,000 households in Ethiopia.
In partnership with the U.S. CDC, GOHi established four severe acute respiratory infection (SARI)/influenza-like illness (ILI) testing laboratories in Ethiopia. As part of the technical support to the labs, GOHi conducted training on RT-PCR techniques.
GOHi is supporting the Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority (EFDA) in undertaking a causality assessment of adverse events following immunizations (AEFI) that were reported to the pharmacovigilance system.
Nkengasong appointed Ambassador-at-Large, U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator and Special Representative
John N. Nkengasong was appointed as the U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator and Special Representative for Global Health Diplomacy at the U.S. Department of State. In this role, Ambassador Nkengasong will lead the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Climate Change and Health Initiative is now accepting applications for its 2022-2023 NIH Climate and Health Scholars Program. In this position, scholars will focus on building capacity in the scientific domains outlined in the NIH Climate Change and Health Initiative’s Strategic Framework. Applications close September 15.
African Academy of Sciences accepting applications for APTI fellowships
In partnership with NIH and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the African Academy of Sciences is accepting applications for African Postdoctoral Training Initiative (APTI) fellowships to support innovation and research projects in Africa. Applications for this four-year fellowship close September 30.
NIH NOSI for addressing hunger and food insecurity
NIH recently announced a Notice of Special Interest (NOSI): Stimulating Research to Understand and Address Hunger, Food and Nutrition Insecurity. This NOSI aims to conduct research regarding food and nutrition insecurity and develop new measures to assess food insecurity.
