GOHi facilitates laboratory equipment calibration

The Global One Health initiative (GOHi) facilitated the calibration of real-time PCR machines in four regional influenza laboratories across Ethiopia through a service contract with African Biosystems, Kenya from July 29-August 9. Strategically located to serve large populations, the laboratories are critical for detecting respiratory illnesses and emerging pathogens, like Mpox.

GOHi fellows complete PhD studies

Expanding capacity of the One Health approach through education, training and research is the cornerstone of GOHi's mission. As part of a Fogarty Global Health Training Program grant from the National Institutes of Health, GOHi developed the One Health Eastern Africa Research Training (OHEART) program. The purpose of the program is to build capacity of eastern African academic institutes located in Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania through a PhD and post-doctoral fellowship program in foodborne, waterborne and vector-borne diseases. Candidates spend one and a half years at Ohio State and two and a half years at their home university.

One Health Summer Institute builds capacity globally

Building One Health capacity globally since 2012, the Global One Health Summer Institute is the Global One Health initiative’s flagship program. Originally, the summer institute focused on Eastern Africa primarily through face-to-face training in Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. However, since the onset of the pandemic, the institute has transitioned to both face-to-face and virtual offerings. The summer institute runs until September 5, and there's still time to register for the remaining online courses.

Enhancing data management and statistical modeling skills for AMR surveillance

In a collaborative effort to address the challenges of data quality in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) surveillance, GOHi partnered with the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) to conduct a training program about data management and basic statistical modeling in One Health research. Attendees gained practical, hands-on training using data applicable to everyday practice to support One Health and AMR surveillance objectives, strengthen One Health/AMR data management and analysis and fill gaps in data analysis tools and software skills.

GOHi celebrates LMG program completion

The Global One Health initiative partnered with Texas Tech University, Oklahoma State University, the U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa and the Ethiopian Ministry of Education to build the capacity of higher education leaders through the Leadership, Management and Governance (LMG) program. During this two-year program supported by the U.S. Department of State’s University Partnership Initiative, 52 higher education leaders participated, including 28 presidents and 22 vice presidents from 38 public universities. The partners hosted a closing ceremony to celebrate the program's achievements.

Autumn 2024 Nutrition Seminar Series

What's the latest and trending news regarding nutrition? Every week during the semester, experts from around the country will present their research as part of this seminar series hosted by the Ohio State Interdisciplinary PhD Program in Nutrition. Each seminar will take place from 11:30 a.m.-12:20 p.m. in 215 Schoenbaum Hall and over Zoom.

GOHi supports Ethiopian public universities through workshops

To continue supporting Ethiopian public universities, the Global One Health initiative, the Ethiopian Ministry of Education, the Institute of International Education and the U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa hosted a workshop to help these universities adapt to a new autonomous governance model. Vice presidents and research directors of the 10 public research universities participated in this five-day training, where they learned about structuring administration offices, managing grants and budgets and more.

GOHi to participate in 8th World One Health Congress

The 8th World One Health Congress will take place September 20-24 in Cape Town, South Africa. Sessions will include One Health Science, One Health Food, One Health Climate and Environment, One Health Socio-Economics, Equity and Capacity Building and One Health Antimicrobial Resistance. This congress will facilitate discussions about major One Health challenges and create opportunities to share research data and policy developments.
